Stow South at Stow Acres Country Club
Played On 06/29/2023good weekday deal
$62 to ride at a well thought out and interesting layout. some challenging shots, not just driver/wedge all day. tee boxes and fairways were near perfect, but the greens were fuzzy and a number of them at some patches where the turf needed to be replaced.
Braintree Municipal Golf Course
Played On 07/26/2020Above average muni
There were some spots of disrepair/overuse typical of a muni, but it was pretty good. I got a $29 tee time the night before through golf now. Sticker price wouldn't be worth it. Staff was extremely friendly, but the pace was glacial. They were already behind for my 8:50 tee time and it got worse from there..
Norwood Country Club
Played On 07/18/2020Stretching the definition of "country club"
There is a small driving range which is the biggest redeeming quality of this course. The proshop is tucked into a strip-mall with a massive parking lot shared with a hotel among other places. The greens were in awful shape. We flew through the front on a saturday afternoon only to run into two groups waiting on 10 tee because they came out to play 9 and the starter sent them off the back. While we were waiting (and they went back to start on 1 instead) two more groups showed up. Not sure if it was a bad day/miscommunication or a culture of incompetence. It was *fine* but I'm not making the trip back.
Cold Spring Country Club
Played On 07/12/2020A real gem
If you find yourself in western MA this is an excellent weekend play. We were the only walkers we saw on the course (hilly, some long green-to-tee trips), but the weather was perfect so we didn't mind. There was no water on the course nor any cart going around, which was a disappointment considering how hot it was. There were a few tee boxes that needed some more attention, but overall the conditions were perfect. You start on a par 3, which is weird, and there are some weird back-to-back hole combinations. The views are excellent
The Rookery South
Played On 07/04/2020Good resort town golf
We played on July Fourth in a beach town, so the pace was always going to be slow, but we finished in under five hours with me hacking my way to a 105, so not terrible all things considered. It being a public course in a vacation destination, there is some evidence of people not taking care of things (bunkers, greens, carts where they shouldn't be). I play here pretty much every summer, as it's relatively affordable to the time and place and a few holes provide interesting challenges.
Newton Commonwealth Golf Course
Played On 06/13/2020Hilly Muni
Bring your hard hat. The holes are on top of one another (a few tee boxes have netting surrounding them). It's a very hilly course and not always in a fair or interesting way. There are a couple of interesting holes (more-so on the back) and it is typically a good deal. Pace of play was good, but if it wasn't ten minutes from my house, there is no way I'd make a return trip here.
