Show me a better course under $40 !!!

Natural layout along the river…just a fun golf course.

Very fair course in terms of difficulty, maybe a bit on the easy side (especially if you keep the ball in the fairway - rough can be penal here.

Great conditions !! Can’t believe I played it fo aboutr 30 dollars.

Good option to consider in Asheville (NC) area

(Writing this as a review for people playing the first time).

Very friendly staff. Pretty part of the country, of course, and some great vistas here. Played through some regulars who we also very nice and offered some tips.

Played the South then the West 9s at the 27 hole facility.

If you like dog-leg right holes, this is your place! Especially for the South nine. I don't recall any dog-leg lefts, but at least 7-8 to the right.

If you are a longer hitter off the tee (by that I mean you hit it 250+), you want to play from the back tees on the South, or just calm down on the tee and hit a shorter club and play target golf.

The West nine is a bit more practical, and open, off the tee.

Very quick greens, in good shape. The ball will hold on well-struck approach shots. big thumbs up on the greens!

Fairway conditions are just okay, but with a pretty good amount of slope, and it being November, that is understandable.

Overall, its an enjoyable, near-the-mountains type golf club and community. Its not going to win awards for design or conditions, but is a very playable and welcoming place in the Asheville area that has a lot to offer.

Beware of the white squirrel(s)!!!!

Don't let "Muni" fool you, this is a great place

Loved the course - municipal it may be. Good spot.

The first hole to me was probably the most boring. After that, a lot of really good golf holes, including multiple holes along Oak Hollow Lake, making for some great views, challenging/unique holes.

The course is also in good shape. Just a legit layout.

Heard from some regulars that the pace of play is often quite slow. Try to pick a time where you think it may be less busy (I lucked out on that).

Got paired up with a good player and a good dude! Had a great time. Joined a two-some ahead of us for the last couple holes. 18 is a great hole.

Great value - classic old course

The summary of the course above says it all. Very wide open first 4 holes, then the course gets increasingly tight with more and more trees - but never to the point where driving fairways is difficult.

Fairways in great shape. Rough is not penalizing at all (makes course easier). Greens have less undulation than other courses around. They are small (making hitting them a bit tough), but are also in good shape.

Overall a good solid experience...a bargain for the $20 I spent.

And yes, as another user said, they need to put some water out on the course.

Appears to be true, the course is getting better!

I am new to the area, but I had heard from many people that this course fell on hard times over the last couple years, but recently changed management, and is trending upward.

I played nine holes here about six months ago (front nine), and thought the place was much better from an amenities standpoint (good practice facilities), compared to the course itself.

This time, I was paired with three members, and they raved about the new management. The course was in much better shape, and I am much more impressed now that I have played the entire 18 hole course. IMO, the best holes are in the middle stretch of the course.

Greens are still needing some work (apparently they had issues with kids riding dirt bikes on the course), but where they don't need that sort of repair, they roll and look great!!

A very solid track overall. You won't find it on a "five best to play" in Charlotte list yet, but its a challenging course (though greens) that from all accounts is getting in better and better condition.

Worth playing for sure!

Tale of two nines

The two nines here are very different. But both nice.

The front nine is defined by planes approaching SAT and HWY-281. Its pretty straight-forward and compared to the back nine, mundane. The two par threes are short, yet fun with water in play.

The back nine is in the Quarry. Its a very unique collection of holes in this almost stadium/coliseum type setting. It looks like you can have a night-time nine hole golf event with a few portable stadium light trucks.

Greens were in amazing shape for the winter, and the course is fair. I think 17 is a bit silly, hard to figure out where to drive it. 18 wasn't its best hole either IMO.

But a fun course in a fun area of San Antonio.

Interesting mix of mostly good, but some bad

This course is in a beautiful location, with mountains in the distance, rolling hills, steams, etc.

There are a lot of fun holes, with major elevation changes, but I think there are 5-6 holes that are either silly, or pretty boring. Back nine is the better nine, IMO.

Tee boxes and fairways were a bit rough, but the greens overall very nice.

Have to hit good drives here. On most holes, the fairways are easy to hit. If you are having a bad driving day, you'll lose golfballs.

Good driving range, but the putting green was nowhere near the speed of the course. The Driving range backs into a pair of apartment/condo buildings that badly need a paint job. Looks a little crummy in there.

I'd definitely play here again. Overall a fun place.

Great place! Worth the drive from Charlotte

First time playing this course.

This course is definitely out in the middle of nowhere and a true country vibe when you drive in. Small clubhouse and a lot of pick-up trucks in the parking lot!

I'd say this is the best bang for the buck course I have ever played in my life. I am serious.

Its Friday rate is $35, I got it for $28 on Golfnow. I feel bad paying that little for this place.

The course is both beautiful and fun. I was truly excited to see what the next hole would present. Its all you and nature. No houses, no busy roads nearby. (I included some pictures).

Greens were in great shape. Fairly quick and very firm on approach. Rolled very true. Very very little ball mark damage from the summer playing season.

Lots of elevation changes.

The thing I like about it is despite the elevation changes, the course lays out in front of your eye. There are very few blind shots, and the fairways are fairly flat given the overall landscape. You will have some very tough approach shots to elevated greens here, but also some dramatic and fun shots down to pins.

All in all, its a very fair golf course, with tough greens that have a good amount of break.

Yes the cart paths are due for a major fix-up (the course is not walkable). But you can drive right along the path and avoid the rough pathways. Tee boxes are a little rough around the edges, but for the most part, anything that you see that is disheveled is well out of play. The bulk of the course is nicely taken care of.

Just a beautiful place. Well worth the drive, and I can't wait to return.

Beautiful course and a good challenge

Booked my tee time via the golf course website's pre-pay rate ($29.00)….which was ten dollars cheaper than anything else out there.

Played early in the morning on a fairly saturated course.

This is an amazing place for the value. Beautiful piece of property. A lot of elevation changes, tall trees lining holes, and not much housing or commercial development around. For much of the course, you feel you are way out there in the wilderness on a well manicured golf course overall.

Greens are very very nice. In excellent condition.

Tee to green is above average in terms of maintenance.

Its also a tough course that will put you in defensive situations quite a bit. On your approaches, you are going to have the ball slightly above or below your feet a lot. For many, including myself, that makes it tough to hit an approach shot close to the hole. And as others point out, I think it plays long. And because of the elevation changes, amazing vistas, etc…..sometime the course just visually looks longer than it is. You have to believe the yardages (which seem correct on the course) and commit to your shot.

The greens often have multiple levels and a lot of undulation. Given that its tough to get the ball close with your approach shots, there are a lot three-putt to be had on this course unless you are an excellent lag putter.

This is a challenging course, no question, but a beautiful one and hard to imagine a better value.

For those looking for a walkable course, this course is NOT walkable.

This is a really nice place overall.

Pretty golf course and a very friendly staff. Nice practice facilities and a nice clubhouse.

Tee to green, very well maintained.

A lot of people reviewing this course are criticizing the greens. I think some of that criticism is too much.

There are a lot ball marks, I don't dispute that.

However, to be fair to the staff at Sycamore, this is function of the course itself.

Its a short course, so a lot of golfers are going to have short irons and wedges into the holes. In addition, fairways are pretty easy to hit, and the rough around the fairways is not punishing. So a lot of well struck, highly flighted golf balls will be coming into these greens.

Furthermore, there is a lot of undulation around the greens, and a fair amount of bunkers. So again, on chips and shorter wedges, you have to fly it to the pin. This is not a course set up to run the ball up to green.

This all makes for a lot of ball marks.

Overall I think they are being pretty well fixed up (always room for improvement - but that is on the golfers!), but with the rain and humidity we have, this type of course is just going to have to absurd a lot of deep ball marks - and the greens will show it.

Otherwise, the greens are rolled well. They offer challenge, plenty of break, but they are manageable.

Very good value course - Still in great shape as winter nears!

Golfnow.com reviews inspired me to try this course, and I am glad I did. Its worth every penny at its normal green fee (35-44 with cart), and with specials often available on GolfNow, I really think this is the best value course on the westside of Cleveland. I walked. Definitely a walking friendly course.

Played on Oct 30. Greens in great shape. They hold well, but are very quick. Plenty of challenge with more breaks and undulations than your average municipal course.

The clearly put time into clearing the course of leaves at this time of year. I didn't lose a single ball (or spend more than 15 extra seconds looking for one), despite only hitting four fairways. (Hit four fairways at Sweetbriar at this time of year, I'd lose 10). Tee boxes and greens clear.

Staff was very friendly. They saw I wanted to play quick, and gave me the path to do it - sending me off the back, and letting me push ahead at the turn in front of another player.

Straightforward golf course. No blind shots. You can see the hazards on any hole in front of you (except maybe the 11th). Nice piece of property.

Despite bitter cold and rain, good fun at a really nice course

Played this course on Oct 3rd. Wind chills in the 30s and rain. Course is in great shape for this time of year. Fairways very nice, and the greens were very fast and challenging. Wet rough on this day added to the challenge.

The greens are what protect this course from being pretty easy actually. Lots of suttle breaks, and very very fast. You should hit a lot of fairways here. And the course is not particularly long. The Par 3s and Par 5s are easy compared to other top public courses in the area.

Overall a great facility, course is in really good shape. A higher class golf experience for sure.

Great place

Very dynamic golf course. Incredible collection of tee shots with elevation changes. Fun and very nice!

Overall, very good conditions, a tad rough around the edges.

Confused at why the 14th is the signature hole. It has a big rock on the left side that represents what the place use to be...its the highest hole on the course, yes, but otherwise not all that visually appealing. Second shot likely to be a blind shot. Can't see entire hole from tee. The tee shot on 15 is one you will remember. I think there are many more memorable holes than the 14th. I think its actually one of the weakest holes on the course.

Tough to play for the first time, especially off the tee. Can't use driver every time, and fairways aren't as easy to hit as it seems.

Great place behind 18th to eat and drink.

Well worth the trip !!

Friendly staff, pretty property, otherwise typical country course

Recommendation depends on what the golfer is looking for.

On this day, it fit what I wanted. I was looking for somewhere to get out very early, play very quickly and be home early - and get some exercise!

I arrived well before my tee time, and the started let me go off on my own at about 6:45 AM (walking). That was awesome! I walked off the course at 8:55 AM having played 18. 5 stars for the staff!

The course is a low-budget country course. Lots of cart damage, many areas in fairway where there is no grass. Hard to see the difference between the fairway and rough from the tees. The fairways are only about 20 yards wide on most holes. Tee boxes just so-so.

Really, from tee to green, this is not an exceptional course by any means.

However, the greens are in very good shape. And its really a pretty piece of property with beautiful big trees lining each hole. There should indeed be a golf course here!

With more money and some better fairway maintenance, this place would be a true hidden gem.

It has a driving range. Putting green just steps away from first green. Nice!

It has some things going for it, but not a course you will remember.
