Destroyer at Seal Beach Navy Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2022Used to be a gem
I can't count how many times I've called this course my favorite course in the area, but that all changed today. The conditions at heartwell or costa mesa CC are better. The greens are being eaten by fungus and have turned to dirt on every hole on the destroyer course. The tee boxes have thin grass on every box. You can see the dirt. I don't mind the dry lake beds because we can play out of them, but I am blown away by how horrible this golf course has become. I was here a month ago and the greens were at least in good condition. You can't even putt them. No reading these greens. It's embarassing. This course was lovely when Trump was directing this governments troop amenities. I wonder what's changed?

You should play your local public course for the same money instead of playing a true gem, glittering in the eyes of it's players and it's team. Go somewhere where it's tough to tell the fairway from the rough, so I can keep playing this place like it's a country club. You probably won't like it anyway. I do. Let's keep it that way. Seriously, don't ruin this place. It's amazing.

Long Beach golf continues to be the worst destination for golf in Southern California. I have considered Big Rec my home course, since I began playing a year and a half ago. I know most of the employees, the instructors and definitely the regular players, grinding it out at the practice facilities. But the management and the course have made themselves so painful to patron, I'm not sure I can continue visiting.
Today, I visited the empty second green on the fifth hole as it is the only place in Long Beach to practice short game. There was a very petty little boy practicing his putting. I walked up and started chipping. Rather than being gracious, continuing his own session, and allowing me to continue mine, he made it known that he was the only one allowed to practice on the green. I asked him to mind his own business, but he called the management instead.
Now, I am no tour pro, but I have played to an 11 handicap in a little over a year and a half by practicing or playing everyday. The manager arrived to back up the petty little boy who can't share his toys, and the manager told me that Petty Boy was allowed to practice but not me. The manager blamed Gavin Newsome and Robert Garcetti, or whatever Long Beach's mayor is named. Though, neither of them were around to actually kick me off the green. Just three dudes in golf carts, not taking responsibility for their own actions. It was more blame casting, and "I'm just doing my job" nonsense, which the manager himself claimed to hate as he was doing it.
But that wasn't the part that rubbed me wrong. The manager, not a politician, made it very clear that they had made a special exemption for the very poor representative of their organization, the petty boy, because he is trying to get a tour card. Like I said, I'm not a tour pro, but I take the game seriously, and I put all of myself into it. I am really embarrassed for this course and game I've loved. The manager made it very clear that having all the privileges of a lifetime of golf makes this little boy more important than a golfer whose game was born on those same greens, and has used and loved the same facilities.
And the very worst part, this kid that they gifted extra course privileges, I've never seen him at the course ever before. He's not a local. He's not even impressive when he swings. He's an ego tripper that has self-aggrandized his game, and a rat. As he followed me around afterward, talking trash and abusing me, it was clear that this kid will never drop his ego enough to find the head space where champions live. So thank you Big Rec, for making me feel small over a newcomer to the course just because he's had a lifetime to master the game. If you ask me, the players who only have hope of getting better, nothing as divaesque as making the tour, and continue to practice all the time are the players that I would be serving, if I managed a course. And I would choose better people to represent my course than an arrogant kid, who believes himself more important than anyone else around.
Go play somewhere else. Nowhere in the state is as awful as Long Beach golf courses. I've been playing all of them, but Long Beach is by far the worst, and it breaks my heart.

This course seems like they are usually built around service, but I arrived an hour early to warm up and practice. Neither the range or any of the greens were open, so I sat around until my tee time without getting to warm up. For the money, play somewhere else until they get over the nonsensical fear around Corona. Try again once they're going because it seems like this should be a good experience.

The desk guy treats his customers very poorly.. They throw extra charges at you when you show up, blaming GolfNow. They honor nothing they say. Go somewhere else. For the money, you can play a bunch of other better maintained courses in the area where the manager is glad to have customers, not irritated by it.

Fun little course. Great for practicing iron play. And these guys are the ones you want in your corner, while the whole world freaks out. They've maintained an excellent environment through out all of this craziness. I've been to many other courses where everyone seems on the verge on an aneurysm. Not Baker. Everybody be chillin'. Thanks Bake.

I've driven from North OC twice in the last week to play this course. The workers are laid back despite the world telling everyone to lose their minds. The course layout is a lot of fun, and it has a bunch of cool challenges. And the carts have Bluetooth speakers. I suggest giving this one a go. I mean, what else are you doing?
Dos Lagos Golf Course

I hope you have the self-respect and dignity to spend your money where they respect you and offer dignity. At Dos Lagos, the underlying philosophy of the GM, Stan, and is reinforced by Matt, the Manager, is that everyone who comes on their property is trying to screw them.
If you're against nanny states, this is a nanny course. The people who work at this course are not outright dishonest, but I've had enough girlfriends that found omission to be the same as a lie that I'll call them dishonest in that they will omit their actual intentions. I asked for ice, and they said to bring my beverages inside and they would give me ice. Instead of giving me ice, he confiscated my beverages. Matt claimed it was because of their liquor license, but he also said they don't catch everyone, and they still have their liquor license. Anyone who has ever been in the service industry knows that they won't lose their license over outside beverages. I'm sure Matt brings his own beers to the courses he plays. Matt and Stan would rather flex nuts,, than have good customer service. They treat people, so that they will be dishonest. If they treated people with dignity, people will be more likely to act honestly rather than deceive them.
I understand that one needs self-respect to treat others with some respect, so ultimately, I hope Matt finds a job that allows him his own dignity. He seemed like a decent enough guy, and it seemed as if he's just in a bad place.
If he had asked me to leave beers in the car, I would have. I'm very honest when it comes to these things. Instead of being decent, they chose to start by treating their customers like thieves. My whole thought, if you're trying to stop other deceivers, you should be better than them, not the same.

The people who work at this course are extremely dishonest. I asked for ice, and they said to bring my beverages inside and they would give me ice. Instead of giving me ice, he confiscated my beverages. This is literally the worst start I have ever experienced on a golf course. Go across the street to Eagle Glen. They are very helpful and kind. They're not trying to screw anyone. He claimed it was because of their liquor license, but I was honest the entire way. If he had asked me to leave beers in the car, I would have. I'm very honest when it comes to these things. Instead of being decent, they chose the legally problematic method of lying, then confiscating my property, which can't be legal. My whole thought, if you're trying to stop other deceivers, you should be better than them, not the same
