Way, way too expensive!!

Green fees $185
Range balls $15

There was NOTHING about this facility that justifies this level of gouging. Nothing.

Greens were sandy and bumpy. No rakes in the bunkers. No ball washers. Range is covered (big whoop). Staff was okay…certainly nothing noteworthy.

Bottom line is that this was way, way too much to pay for vacation golf.

The starter saved the day….

This coulda gone south quickly if not for the friendliest of starters (Herb). I had signed up as a single (via GolfNow), but the “threesome” showed up as a “foursome” (mortal sin in golf…just sayin’). Herb quickly peeled a single from another group and sent us out as a twosome, AHEAD of the (not) threesome. Well played, Herb!

Greens are still recovering, but it is a challenging track. You won’t lose a lot of balls here, but you need to put the ball on the correct side of the fairway to score well here.

Another HH Plantation Treasure

I played all four of the Hilton Head Plantation courses this week (Oyster Reef, Bear Creek, CC of Hilton Head, and Dolphin Head). They are all TOP-SHELF tracks.

I was a little concerned about Dolphin Head because the last time I played it, they were over-the-top adamant about their 4-hour round policy. Something's changed because the starter never mentioned it. The rangers never mentioned it. And, guess what? We finished our round In 3:57 (without ever feeling rushed)!

Conditions are PERFECT from teebox through green. Beverage cart was out and running on a Friday morning. Practice facilities are stellar.

This is private country club golf available for (limited) public play golf. DO NOT MISS OUT ON PLAYING THIS COURSE!

On a scale of 1-to-10...

...this place is a 12!!!

I'll keep this brief.

I have been traveling to Hilton Head for 30-some years, playing rounds of golf 3-6 times each week I'm here. I have been most (not all) of the HHI tracks.

THIS IS THE BEST TRACK ON THE ISLAND!!!!

Staff is GREAT. Practice facilities are GREAT. Course conditions were/are GREAT. Starter was GREAT. Everything is/was GREAT.

You are cheating yourself if you don't get out and play this course when you are looking for a golf game on the island.

Bear is a beautiful beast...

There are four tracks on Hilton Head Plantation...I always have difficulty picking my favorite. It usually boils down to which one I've played most recently.

I played Oyster Reef on Monday; it was my favorite until today when I played Bear Creek (again).

Everything about this place screams private club, but it's for the public. Course layout is challenging, but more than fair. Off-fairway balls are findable/playable. Greens are in GREAT shape. Pace of play was spot on (4 hours for our foursome without feeling rushed/pressured). Staff is very friendly and professional.

I wish the pro shop was a bit bigger, but that's just me whining.

If you are looking for GREAT golf on HHI, play this track.

The Bear is back...

We've been coming the HHI for over 30 years. The GB was dropped from our rotation about five years ago, but w'eve been hearing good things about the course's recovery, so we figured we've give it a shot.

It was a shot well-taken. The course has the teeth it had several years ago! Greens were recently sanded, but they still rolled fast and true. I though the teeboxes and bunkers were well-groomed. Fairways were perfect. The staff was very friendly and courteous to our group.

Overall, I had no complaints, only compliments. The Bear is officially back in our summer vacation rotation!

Sweet Track (but not surpising)...

I have always loved Oyster Reef, but have missed playing there the last couple of years. I'm super-glad I made it this year.

Conditions were PERFECT. Course is WELL-DESIGNED. Bunkers are BRAND-NEW and PERFECT. Greens are BRAND-NEW and PERFECT.

Staff -- from bag drop through restaurant staff -- are super-friendly.

Can you tell that I love this place yet?

Great track...

I have been coming to HHI for summer vacation for the last 35(ish) years, so I know most of the tracks on (and off) the island.

Shipyard (Clipper/Galleon) is a LOT of FUN. We played from the blues and it is a challenge. Course is well-groomed. You need all of your shots to get around the doglegs (right and left), short/long par threes and long(ish) par 5s. The course is not ridiculous-tight, but you will be punished if you spray the ball too much.

Like other commenters, I'm not a fan of the greens. Very astroturfy and very slow. But, I'm from the Northeast, so I expect unfamiliar grasses when playing down here.

A day well spent, for sure.

Thanks for coming and playing, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your day!

The zoysia grass on our greens does get slower in the summertime due to the thick blade. When it's growing like it does in the heat, it limits how quick the greens can get. Hope you get the chance though to visit in the fall through late spring when they are really good!

Best,
Ben

This is how you manage a golf course...

I actually felt badly paying "aeration rate" greens fees because other that being a tad slower than the normal "like putting on your kitchen floor" sped, the greens were in excellent shape.

Really, it's all about how the course handled the "aeration window". The aeration dates were published on their website. When I called the pro shop to check on conditions, I got an honest, no BS answer. When I showed up at the course, I got the aeration rate (again, felt a bit guilty about that). The starter was on the putting green, reminding players that the greens were running a bit slow, but were more than playable. That, fellow hackers, is how a top-shelf course manages its guests expectations.

My only beef, really, is not with the staff, but with other players? Do you really think that because the greens have been aerated recently that it's okay NOT to repair your ballmark? That's a trick question: it is NOT okay.

Make no mistake, this is a top-shelf track. You'll need every shot in your bag AND you'll need to mindful of your course management skills; both will be tested.

I drive 90 minutes to play this joint 2-3 times a year. I wish I lived closer.

Well done, CTN staff...well done, indeed.

It keeps getting BETTER...

We play here a couple of times a year. It's a great track for an early-in-the-season round. NGC did not disappoint us again. Every person we dealt with was very friendly. Course was in great shape (greens were rolled).

We're 10-12 handicappers, so we played from the Blue tees. It's a good challenge, not so much because of distance, but more because your iron play has to be pretty accurate.

WOW!!!!!

I kinda/sorta like when a golf course "wins" every once in awhile, as long as the course beats me fair and square; that is, the course's defense can't be a bunch of screwy miniature-golf type holes.

Fenner Hill beats you fair and square. If you enjoy having your game challenged, there are 18 challenges on this track. There are a couple of par 4s that are reachable, provided you driver is long AND accurate. If they aren't BOTH, you're well-advised to layup. There are a couple of par 5s that are reachable in two, provided you're fairway club of choice is long AND accurate. If they aren't BOTH, you're well-advised to make them three-shot par 5s.

This course's true defense, however, is its greens. They roll perfectly, but they are FAST and they have more curves than Jane Mansfield (dating myself there!). You need to EXPECT to three-putt a couple of times during your round.

I fought Fenner Hill to a draw. She knocked me around pretty good on the front-side, but I came back strong on the back side.

I really can't say enough good things about this course; I can't wait to get back into the ring again with it next year.

Minor complaint: No driving range.

A hidden gem of a course...

If you drive from Central Connecticut to Cedar Knob, the ride alone will make your day. "Scenic" is an understatement!

Cedar Knob is tucked away in Somers, so once you tee off on #1, you won't hear a car or see house for the next 4 or 5 hours.

Par 3s are challenging (long). Three of the four par 5s are really challenging (no way to get close/home in two that I can figure out). Par 4s are a good mix of sorta/kinda easy and challenging.

I love this place!

If you play golf in CT...

...then your year is not complete if you don't play Connecticut National!

I drive from central CT, and the ride is awesome. Once you get off of I-84, it's scenic all the way (my drive ended with a two-mile jaunt down a dirt road!).

Stellar practice facilities (all-clubs range, expansive chipping area, and well-maintained putting green near the first tee).

Course itself was immaculate. There is trouble (i.e., fescue) everywhere, but the fairways are pretty wide. Greens are protected, but not overly so. Great par 5s, awesome par 3s, and challenging par 4s. If you bring your A-game you will do well here (and feel good about yourself, too).

Bottom-line: a challenging track that rewards the player who manages his/her game well.

Always a challenge, but this time...

...we played from the tips (black). A lot of fun, but only if:
a) you are bomber with the driver
b) you hit the ball relatively straight

The Quarry's defense is the tightness of its fairways. You're in for a long-ish day if you tend to spray the ball. There's a nearly 400-yard diference between the blues (59ish) and blacks (63ish), so it is a challenge.

But, if you mostly can say "yeah, that's me" to a) and b) above, playing from the blacks is a lot of fun!

As always, staff -- from proshop to starter, to cart girl -- are extremely friendly and seem to be genuinely happy that you picked Quarry Ridge for a round of golf.

Only thing lacking here is a driving range, but Portland West -- and executive course literally two minutes for QR -- has one.

Never a disappointment...

A great place to kick off the 2017 golf season. Being in the southeastern section of the state allows it to open a week (or more) before most other courses. It's evident that the grounds crew has been hard working getthing the place ready for play. The greens rolled especially true. There wasn't a lot of winter debris to be found. Yeah, the course is wet in a few spots, and the traps still need grooming, but this spring golf, people!

We travel an hour to play here a couple of times a season. I've never been disappointed.

Great job, guys.

A very good challenge

A great track, in my opinion. Doglegs abound, but from the whites, the landing areas are fairly generous. All of the par 3 are risk/reward decisions. Bunkers are perfect. Greens are challenging, but not at all unfair.

My tip to you? Keep you ball BELOW the hole at all times! You'll have much better opportunities for birdie.

Perfect conditions. Tee boxes were well-maintained. Cart GPS units are always very helpful. Greens were PERFECT.
