Soggy in early November

LIKE ALL WILLAMETTE VALLEY golf courses when the rainy season sets in, Pumpkin Ridge is slippery, wet, soggy. That's just the way it is. So be prepared. It had been dry for 2 days when we played and the course was still muddy.
In addition for such a well thought of course, Ghost Creek's grass is surprisingly thin. This is especially noticeable in the long rainy season when finding a good lie in the fairway can be difficult. Pumpkin Ridge needs better grass.

Pretty beat up

Funky layout; grass very thin & spotty, and not only from hot summer. Around us in northwest Oregon GolfNow seems to have lost most if its good courses (OGA, Sand Pines, Black Butte Ranch) without comparable new offerings.

Beautiful layout

The location of water on the front nine especially and the undulations plus speed on most greens make for a very challenging course. For this average 70 year old to shoot a 49-47 -- 96 was most rewarding. Par 5s saved the round -- not overly long.

Walked

A difficult walk --very up-and-down, seemed like mostly UP.

This is an outstanding suburban public course, quite challenging for the once-a-week golfer.
For an oldster like myself (67), walking and carrying was quite tiring, more than any other course I've played in Oregon (including Bandon Dunes, Black Butte Ranch, Sandpines). It's walkable, but be prepared.

Nothing special, but OK course

Classis 1930s country club layout, mature trees line fairways, making for somewhat tight tee shots. Out-of-bounds very close and extensive on back nine.
Staff pretty damned indifferent.

Great springtime in mountains value.

Springtime conditions: fairways not quite ready (and dry spring has made course itself a bit less than green); greens not perfect; pretty chilly last 4 or 5 holes. But what a deal for $23 on GolfNow. And a beautiful course with views of Sisters, Thee-Fingered Jack; Washington; Jefferson. Definitely worth the drive up from the Valley.

WET fairways; excellent greens

After 5 inches of rain the previous two days, the course itself was understandably very wet in many places, (but not all). However, the greens were in excellent condition. They have been completely rebuilt with sand under them and it shows.
Overall, it was a fun place for my wife (a new golfer) and me to play 9 holes.

Poor fairways

1) The fairway grass is thin. With even our slightly wet conditions, fairways were difficult to play.
2) Overall course layout is weird: Driving landing zones vary tremendously --from very narrow with large trees to very wide.
c) Burying creeks is always a problem: Why? They are fair natural hazards.

Ho-hum

A couple of fun, funky par-3's. Just an old-fashioned back-and-forth course...except when you have to walk 1/4 mile green-to-tee in the weird new layout. Lots of SLOW players. But it's still an OK course (but not worth the $45 normal green fees).

Ha, ha....

So, we get to the course in time (at 1:55 --there was a road-work delay) to be on the 1st tee for our 2 p.m. tee-time. (We actually had to wait for the group ahead of us to leave the green on the par-3 first hole.) But we had been told we were late (we weren't), and that there would be a league shotgun start on every hole at 5:30, so we would need to finish by then. There had been nothing on the GoldNow website warning of this. We finished in 3:15, but my playing partner felt rushed all day, and I was concerned we'd have to fight someone to finish our paid for 18.
If you can't guarantee the full 18 to a group playing at a reasonable pace, don't offer it!

Pretty good value for Valley in winter

The problem is --as with all Willamette Valley courses in the winter: wet and muddy. Better than last year, but still reall then grass and muddy lies over 2/3 of the course; greens are in good shape, just a bit spongy. But NO roll anywhere; well-hit drives BACKING UP! If you can get to the coast: Sandpines is excellent; Ocean Dunes; Alderbrook, or one of the none-hole courses, their condition is far superior.

Great winter play!

Sanpines in the winter is very, very good. 8+ inches of rain one week earlier, and the course was in excellent shape today --no sign it had even rained. (Compare that to ANY course in the Willamette Valley.)

SOGGY!

But ALL Willamette Valley courses are soggy in the rainy season, i.e. from November through April or May. Eastmoreland, Cross Creek (a bit better because grass is better maintained; greens are well-sanded and pretty dry); Langdon Farms (works on drainage); Pumpkin Ridge (just a better course): all are wet and swampy in the winter.
Play the coast! Gearhart, Sandpines, Ocean Dunes, Bandon: all are built on sand and drain almost immediately for great winter conditions.
