Savannah Resort Course Fills the Bill

I was able to play the resort course twice while visiting Savannah for the first time. First, the location was perfect. Directly across the river from the downtown historic district, the hotel was merely a few minutes from the many outstanding restaurants and bars that "haunt" this southern classic city. By far my favorite spot in Georgia. Uber or taxis worked well too.

Second, the course was right out in front of you. There was a great mix of long holes (eg. 599 Par 5 7th playing into the wind) and short (eg. the 14th at 292.) The par 3's are all good, but not horribly difficult. The fairways were wide and in good shape---not much rough on the course.

And the greens....
...the green on 11 was huge. Then the green on 12 seemed even bigger. On 12 you could easily have a 50-60 yard putt. The only greens I recall being bigger are some of the double greens at St. Andrews. The greens are new and kind of grainy. Since I play primarily on bent greens, the greens eventually got in my head and though I started out putting well, by the end of the second round I was a mess. But that is on me--not the course. But because the greens were new, they didn't hold many shots. Unfortunately, the collars in front of the greens were soft so if you tried to bounce one on you often came up short---which often beat the alternative of being over the green.

To sum up, the course is well worth the time and money to play. The set up is perfect for a buddies trip or for couples, especially with the city being so nearby. I highly recommend if you get the chance to try it out!

Young Course Hopes to Develop Like a Fine Wine

Played this fairly new course a few months ago on a very windy day and decided to give it a redo. The first time I played the winds were so strong that the balls would move off the green if a gust hit when the ball was on a slope. So, I decided to tee it up again.

First, the course is still fairly new in a major residential development so there is lots of construction going on. As you might expect, that creates lots of noise, and the backdrop of many holes are marred by this (hopefully) temporary condition.

With that said, there is a lot of interesting holes with a good mix of easy, not so easy and tough holes. The condition of the course was wonderful for a new course in a housing community. The housing around the course is plentiful and will be growing, but the existing houses did not create a plethora of bowling alley holes with OB pinched-in on both sides of the fairway. There is some water on the course, but the penalty areas are fairly well marked. And the GPS on the carts help too.

The folks in the pro shop were very nice, but at least at this time, there was nowhere nice to sit and have a cocktail after we finished. There was a cart girl during the round for those that like to imbibe while playing. It was cash only.

All in all, this course has lots of promise and if they keep doing what they are doing now, once the construction is completed, it will be a very nice course if they keep it open to the publec.

Fun track in Orlando

Wanted to get in a quick round before the end of the year and booked a twilight round at Shingle. I had heard that it was "ok" but I found it to be much better than "ok".

The only complaint was that we didn't quite get to finish because the pace of play on the front nine was a little so. When we passed the group in front of us on #8 things really sped up.

The greens were in great shape. The pro shop paired us with a very nice father/sun pair and we agreed to play tees that fit everyone's game. The practice area, including the sand bunker and chipping range just off the putting green was very nice.

But the best thing about the course to me was the very fun yet challenging layout. Just enough difficulty without being a torture track. The sand traps were well placed. The holes moved smoothly and consistently so you didn't seem to have a "murders row."

The next time I go back to Orlando, I will make sure to hit this one up again.

Unusual Florida layout offers fun round

I had heard various things about the old course at Mission Inn but wanted to see for myself.

First, the driving range. The balls and teeing area were very acceptable. But the range itself? The term "goat ranch" may have been too kind. Somebody got a mower?

The layout was quite interesting and the course played longer than its listed yardage. After a few holes I got it...no roll..and on many holes you drove into or up a steep hill.

Ok..no problem.

But my main complaint was the greens, which appeared to be in fine shape, had been top dressed to the max. The putting green was not so marred. Putting was a joke at best. I understand that these maintenance issues must be done. But how about a little warning or suggesting that we play the new 18?

Golly!

The late Jim Nabor's golf course lived up to its advance billing. The fairways are wide open and as good as any I've ever played. Hardly any rough to speak of...maybe in rough once all day. Sand traps are strategically placed so you just can't bomb away all day.

Greens were a little slower than what I am used to, so I had a hard time getting downhill putts to the hole. Other than that, they were in great shape.

The par 3's were great and the signature #5 maybe the weakest of the bunch as the 175 foot fall makes it a little gimmicky for my tastes. #18 a great finishing Par 5 and #6 is a true Par 4 1/2---something every course should have.

My only complaint is that the range was beat up. With all the land that is available, please put in more hitting areas.

Fun stop on the way to the Trail

We recently went on our yearly spring golf trip, slightly delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. We decided to stop on the way to Farmlinks to break up the ride from Louisville. The course conditions were really good and for the money (we are seniors) this is one of the best values of all time.

The course is challenging enough and the day we played wind was a real issue. #10 is hard enough as it is, but try playing it into a 30 mph wind! The tees, greens and fairways were all top notch and despite being built in a subdivision, the holes were interesting and not too constricted by the housing. Green speed was acceptable for the conditions and if the greens were any faster, the wind would have blown the ball off the green on occassion.

The people at the course were great too and it seems as if they have a wonderful youth golf program--which is what golf needs.

The only issue is the range. It is over used (as are most public access courses) but the real problem were the range balls. I feared the balls were so old and hard that the face of my driver would cave in. Maybe there should be a driving range ball fund....I would contribute.

Less is Less

I often stay at the Resort when I travel to the Phoenix area and lots of times my business dictates that I am there in the summer. Still, the course was always in remarkable shape considering the heat. I understand the course recently underwent a sculpting reducing the layout from 27 to 18:holes. Any golf course—even those in the desert sun—will take time to recover. I also was told that the area had a cool wet spring and the transition to summer grass had not yet been fully achieved.

With that said, I still must report my overall disappointment in the new layout. The front nine was just kind of blah. The ninth still shows some pizazz but for the most part, what made the course fun and memorable was just missing in action.

The back nine was somewhat better as the routing reminded me more why I always enjoyed playing The Phoenician. But overall, I fear the renovation cost the course the variety it offered before when it offered 27 interesting holes whereas the “new” 18 just seems not quite to measure up.

Hopefully, more seasoning is all that is required, but I suspect I will be playing more rounds off the resort than on when I return to the hotel in the future, as Scottsdale has many better offerings.
