East at Webster Golf Club
Played On 9/11/2013Most challenging course around
I should qualify the Summary Statement. This course, from the Blue tees and from the Tips is LOOOOONG! Hole #4, #10 and #12 are very difficult and for most players, Bogey is not a bad score!
For the amateur player, they have 5 tee boxes of varying difficulty and the course is set up so that a right handed slicer can still score a reasonable score as all of the holes with OB (The entire front 9) are all on the left.
There are a lot of trees to deal with and the greens are slick with subtle breaks. Leaving to ball below the hole is a must or 3 putts are very easy to come by!
The course has a nice patio with simple bar food and a good selection of liquors and beer.
The conditions always seem to be great except for the bunkers. The traps are hard and the sand is shallow, making the fairway bunkers easy to hit out of and the green-side bunkers difficult to hit the ball soft.

This course design is menacing at times and I want to love it but there are areas on this course that are wet from Spring to Fall and I always get more frustrated playing in the mud than I can handle and my memories of the course tend to not be fond.
The course is mature with the trees on the course looking like they have been integrated into it for the past century and the greens tend to be a little slow but always in great shape.
It is a nice mix of very difficult tight holes and open layouts to allow the higher handicap players to score.

Played On 8/12/2013Great Course - Great Atmosphere
This is one of my favorite courses and I make sure to get out and play it at least once a year. It is set on a hillside overlooking the lake. The clubhouse and proshop are wonderful and the staff is friendly.
The golf course is tough if you don't hit it straight. The front 9 is wide open and the back has more trees but the fescue grass makes you pay for arrant shots. There is also plenty of water and the greens slick and have a lot breaks if you are not tight to the hole.
My only complaint here is that the course is inconsistently maintained. The greens show signs of dollar spot occasionally and the fairways develop dead spots where water puddles from poor drainage.

Played On 8/11/2013Wonderfully challenging course
This is one of my favorite courses. It is a nice mix of challenging lies, elevation changes, water hazards and deviously placed sand traps. This is worth the drive from Rochester or Syracuse at least 2-3 times a year! Add the lake ontario wind and you can get a downright bear of a golf course at times!
The facilities are also nice with a large bar and restaurant area and the pro staff is friendly and helpful.
Big Oak Public Golf Course
Played On 7/2/2013Inexpensive and Fun Course
This course is good for the 20+ handicap golfer that likes an open layout and a good value. The lower handicap golfers might be a little frustrated with this course at times due to the inconsistency of the mowing. It was a little wet when we played there but the course was still in reasonable condition and the greens were in very good shape. The rest of the course was ok. Give it a try!

Played On 5/12/2013A Beginner's Course
Let's be honest about this course. It is cheap and a great place to learn the game. That is about it! The greens are slow, the layout is WIDE open and there is very little that can get you in trouble. Take those people that you are trying to get to learn the game like a wife/girlfriend, your kids, etc.
Just play it for what it is. All of the par 4's are short and the par 3's are scoring holes. Just have fun with it!

This course has a lot going for it. Great location, great food, nice layout and reasonable facilities.
The course has nice greens and a lot of doglegs to challenge your ability to move the ball. Some of the fairways are very tight and there is a lot of out of bounds to punish you for being wild. All both fun and frustrating!
I have never been to a course where the staff is so rude. I hoped that my first few experiences there were a fluke and I have gone back and played there with the same results. The last experience, I was actually chased down on the course by one of the pro shop staff and accused of not paying. When I produced my receipt they accused me of picking it out of the trash and escorted me into the proshop with my credit card to verify that it was in their system. Not once did I get an apology for this and my wife and I promptly left the course. I can't imagine going back again unless it is free.

I don't know what I can say about this course except, WOW!
What a great surprise to play this course and see what a gem is hidden in little Lyons, NY. The greens are perfect the course is pristine and expertly maintained and if you play on a weekday, then the rates are really reasonable.
It is not far from the NYS Thruway and is an easy drive to get there. Just do it.
