Apache Stronghold Golf Course

1st thing. The original concept was great. Get a world class designer to design the course. Everybody will come. However, it is the middle of nowhere. The casino has 1000 slot machines and 2 card tables. Everybody in the casino needs walkers to maneuver. Nothing else but loud music to make it seem like a happening place. Anyway, the course suffers on maintenance mostly sand traps, because it is just the slot machines sustaining the place. But, The course is Great! Every hole is a treat! The greens are very large, so you can hit them. Putting is like putting on a hillside. Brutal. Carts have GPS. Anyway, you WILL not be dissapointed.

I am a 7 hdcp and I'm 74 yrs old. We camped here for 1 night and I thought I would give this course a try. This is without a doubt the worse course I EVER played. Just know this review won't effect this course. The people who play this course CANNOT golf. And they do NOT care. This is a course where they get out of the house for a few hours to get to cocktail hour. When I teed off, 2 3 somethings and a 2 teesome behind me dropped out after THREE!!! holes because of pace of play. I hung in there because I figured out they were NOT going to play 18. I was right! It was a rat hole. Like grass was at a premium. The WORST golf experience I have ever had. Like I say, it will not matter as NOBODY is coming here to play this mess.

This is one of the great courses in Oregon. Rees Jones design. Yardage on card means absolutly nothing. You're at sea level with soft fairways in to a 10-15 mph wind. Marine layer of fog in the morning. Can be worse ( much worse). So, you are at sea level, soft fairways, into the wind. Got it? 6000 yds plays 6700 yds. I'm not kidding. OK. I'm a 7 hdcp golfer who only hits driver 210 yds. This is a brutal course. But FUN!!! Greens have very few breaks, but they are soooo subtle. Hard to read. OB Sports is mgmt now. Course in nice condition. Have fun and please suck it up play shorter tees.

They are under new mgmt. OB Sports I believe? Previous people in early March were rude and arrogant. I think(?) they knew they were going out the door? And they deserved to be gone. I've played 14 rounds there over the years. The new mgmt has the
course in great shape, greens nice, actual grass in the fairways. This is a fabulous course! BUT!!!! be prepared to play from a tee (or 2) forward from where you normally play. It IS SEA LEVEL, marine layer, morning due or fog, wind more than possible, softer fairways. It can be THREE clubs more than the yardage. I'm NOT kidding!!!! 6000 yds is by my calculation, about 6400 yds. here. Play the right tees!!! Also, greens tend to be slower. Took a while from 11.7 stimps on my course to their 9.5's. This course is NOT to be missed!!!

Wanted to play 18 holes along with Waldport course where we had golf certificates. The website showed $7 per 9 holes riding. I WAS walking. My friend was riding. They then charged her $28 for $18 holes. I asked why? "When a cart leaves the barn it is always $28"? I mentioned that the site shows $7/per 9 holes. They said and I quote " we can't put all the info the web site"? HUH? Geez no wonder they're a pipsqueak 9 hole course.

We traveled over from central Oregon to play the course for 2 successive days. The course is very nice and was an excellent value. There are some very difficult holes, some of the short par 3 holes will test any golfer. Course is maintained well and it gets a LOT of play as it is very popular. One word of warning: it does NOT drain well after a rain. It rained, I think, an inch the day before we got there. The course becomes extremely difficult to play at that point. Your drive can travel maybe 1 ft after it hits the ground. A fairway wood rolls maybe 3 ft? A 350 yd uphill par 4 plays like it is 420 yds (I'm not kidding)! So, excluding par 3's, it plays 400-500 yds longer. We played the next day in the wind, so it dried out some. Shot about 7 strokes better. Nice views and interesting. Just be aware of the weather.
The Cedars on Salmon Creek
Played On 03/11/2015Hopeless!
This is a follow up review from a year ago. I was there a year ago and had a lot of fun. I had ONE minor, minor suggestion to improve the course. The lady pro told me "perhaps I don't know how to putt". Strangely, she's not there anymore! Anyway, I called today to schedule a tee time during the week during their slow times. It's a 350 mile round trip for us. I told them I had a "minor" medical condition which unfortunately wasn't great if I played with somebody else. The person on the phone said, and I quote: "what's your medical condition?" Folks, I've played 10 rounds at Bandon. Cedars ain't Bandon in case you're wondering. There IS a reason it is Bandon, EVERYTIME I called Bandon, NEVER did they once asked me what was bothering me? And I played as a twosome every time. Play elsewhere and you might be welcome....

This was without a doubt one of my biggest mistakes ever. Took 2 of us nearly 5 hrs to walk. Nobody behind us and nobody in front of us. Was the Bataan death march. Some of the holes were so over designed as to be silly. Was looking for the clown and the windmill on some greens. Advertised as a links course. EXCEPT you cannot bounce the ball on the green on most holes. Tricked up in front of almost all greens unnecessarily. A "links" course where you have to hit a high 2nd or 3rd ball in on a WINDY course. Save your $ and play Pacific Dunes (which I have played 5 times, Bandon Dunes 4 times, Bandon Trails 4 times). If it was free, I would decline.

This is a follow up review. Was one of our favorite courses for 4+ years. Went downhill slowly. Under new ownership now. THEY HAVE PLANTED GRASS!!!! The fairways were totally coming back! No moving your ball around to find grass anymore. The greens were perfect. Maintenance was superb! This is a total gem people! Many holes are in the trees and it then opens to links style. Great change of pace. Yes, it can be very windy! Stop whining. Pretend you're in Scotland. We had PERFECT weather. Sunny, 68 degrees and 10-15mph winds. We used to play it 4-6 times a year before they went downhill. Tee off early to avoid any serious wind. It is in great condition right now and is it back on our calender. That Tom guy is just a super person and he took 25 minutes talking to us on the 4th hole about what we thought of the changes.

The Mook at Alderbrook
Played On 09/15/2014Again, great!
This is an old timey course. 50+ years old. It isn't like on TV! Narrow, undulating fairways, small greens. This is perfectly acceptable as long as you know this. You're at 68ft above sea level, in marine air, so the course plays about 300-400yds longer than what the card says. EASILY! Tricky holes. Carry this, stop on that, you get the point.. One hole on back is UNPLAYABLE! A par 3. You will know it when you see it. Played it 4 times now ( I"m 71 yrs old and a 7 hdcp) but iy plays sooo much longer than the yardage. Fun.....
The Mook at Alderbrook
Played On 07/15/2014Fun!
This was an extremely fun course. DO NOT let the yardage fool you. By my estimate it plays 300-400 yds longer than the card. 1st: you're at sea level, with heavy marine air, fairways that have longer grass than you expect (probably because of the salt air). Also, imagine your home course greens, and then divide that size by 3 maybe 4, postage stamp size. Also MANY are elevated 1-2 ft above the fairways ALL the way around, so if you miss one, chipping is very, very tricky! We had a blast! Tricky, have to place your shots (tee shots also) between mature overhanging trees. Was in nice condition, staff VERY friendly, we'll be back. I shot 77, but I HAD to concentrate on EVERY shot.
Lewis River Golf Course
Played On 06/04/2014What fun!
Came up from central Oregon on a golf trip. Back ground: I'm 70 yrs old, 7 hdcp, but I only drive 210 yds. This is a perfect course if you are that type of golfer. Listen, this is an old "timey" course, from the 60's I think. Short, narrow fairways, lot of slope and humps on the small greens. This is a PERFECTLY acceptable design on a short course with small greens. In fact it heightens the challenge, as it should, on an older course. This was built before they had modern mowing techniques. They are SMART enough to keep the Stimp at 10. The putts won't get away from you. You will need to be able to chip as the greens are smaller. Fortunately I can chip and putt and shot 79. The staff was friendly and the pub sandwiches were excellent and the service was very good. Sit outside on the deck and watch the river flow by. Price was soooo reasonable. We'll be back!
The Cedars on Salmon Creek
Played On 06/03/2014follow up review
This is an old timey course. Excellent lay out, interesting course. Small greens, undulating, which was the defense of this course in those times, shorter yardages. You HAVE to expect that. When I was there the Stimpmeter must have been 11.5 (?). This was NOT how the course was designed. When I called after the round, the lady pro said I probably (?) didn't know how to putt (I'm a 7 hdcp)? Previous reviews showed this woman to be the major problem. She is no longer there for obvious reasons! We will now come back again, because it is so interesting and greens will be 9-10 on the Stimpmeter (promised).
The Cedars on Salmon Creek
Played On 06/03/2014Hard to explain, please read
A little back round: I'm 70 yrs old and a 7 hdcp and I ONLY drive the ball 210 yds. We drove up from central Oregon to play the course, 170 miles. This is an old timey course. Which we understood, BEFORE we played. It's not long, because it was designed more than 40+ years ago. The defense on these type of courses are the greens. They're NECESSARILY small with a LOT of undulations. This is PERFECTLY acceptable on this type of course (I'm a 7 hdcp), BECAUSE I can chip and putt). Back when this course was designed, the mowers probably couldn't cut below an 1/8 inch? Now they can mow down to 13+ on the Stimp Meter. Well, the course was great! A lot of water in play and ball placement needed always. HOWEVER, the greens were rolling at 11+ on the stimp meter. These greens were NEVER designed for this. If you were 6 ft above a hole, you COULD NOT take your putter back more than 1 inch unless you wanted a 5ft putt coming back. That is why I CANNOT rate the course conditions. I tried talking to the lady in charge and she basically said I don't know how to putt and was very condescending. Other reviewers: " I would agree with the last reviewer about the gal who is behind the counter. Personality plus, would not be her forte." My guess it was the one I talked to.? What is even stranger: I played the next day at Lewis River and the guy behind the counter there said, "were the people friendly" when you checked in? Word gets around it seems? So, summary, hard to rate the course. They could care LESS about any minor criticism. The golf business must be really really good?
Thanks for making the trip out to our course. We hope to see you back soon when the weather permits
