I like this course but unfortunately can't play here anymore unless I bring someone with me...

My regular playing partner had to shut down for the season due to injury. We'd play here almost every weekend thru Golf Now and then enjoy breakfast or lunch afterwards in the clubhouse. Unfortunately, it seems that this year, I can't book as a single. There are lots of tee times showing up with openings for 2 golfers but since I'm by myself, I can't sign up to join the other 2 golfers to make a threesome. It seems that they would rather send groups out in 2s or 4s and turn away anyone else looking for a game. How many single players are they losing due to this poor management decision?

Sorry but you've lost me for the rest of this year as I now have to find somewhere else to play.

Great Affordable Course

We play here quite often. Price is right, layout is fairly challenging depending on which nines you play. The red nine is the easiest, with the gold being a bit more challenging and the white being the most difficult. At least that's what I find. We played the white and gold on this day and overnight rain meant 90 degree rules with the carts. However, the course was in really good shape, greens are quick.
My only complaint is with the golfers who don't fix their ball marks. There were a few greens that were very badly marked.... not the courses fault, just some inconsiderate golfers.
We always stay and have breakfast or lunch afterwards. Food is quite good and reasonable. It should be noted that we play early in the morning on weekends as they seem to be a popular course for tournaments.

Price went up, quality went down

First off, let me say that I have always loved this course. My BIL and I like to treat ourselves a few times a year. The course looked to be in good shape although the greens do look a little "pockmarked" from people not fixing their ball marks. My real gripe is with the bunkers. Please PUT SOME SAND IN THEM!!! I'm a decent sand player but geez, every one of us in our group "skulled" our sand shots all day. There was no way to get under the ball unless it was picked clean. The club just bounced off whatever was under the sand and we would hit the ball thin. It happened twice on one hole to one of the guys in our group. Just fix this one problem and I would be happy again.

We were also a little disappointed with the service in the restaurant. We always stop in and have a nice lunch and a beer and have never been let down. There seemed to be a large group sitting in the upper portion of the restaurant and so it was busy. We ordered our food and waited...and waited. Other people came in put in their orders and received their food 10-15 minutes later.....and we were still waiting. We asked what was taking so long as we had been there for 35 minutes at this point. "Oh, there's a big group that came in just before you sat down" we were told. When we asked why people who came in after us were already eating we were told that it was because they probably ordered salads. (They didn't...some were having burgers and sandwiches...same as we ordered). We didn't push it any further as I figured I would use this forum to show my displeasure. The food was very good but the service pretty much sucked. This was the first time we've been unhappy with either the course or the restaurant. Unfortunately, both were subpar on this day.
Will I return? Yes because like I said I love this course. Just do something about the sand traps. PLEASE!

Thank you for your feedback. We have been adding new sand into the bunkers but unfortunately not all of them have been completed yet. As for the restaurant, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please call us directly at 905-356-7221 to speak to the Restaurant Manager to discuss further.

Tried to get one last round in....

We booked for 8:45 am but on this chilly morning there were few souls out here. We got off around 8:30. It rained all day Saturday and so the conditions were quite wet. Carts were allowed but 90 degree rule applied. Except for the soggy conditions, the course was in really good shape. Greens had recently been aerated but were rolling nicely. With no one around, it felt like we had the course to ourselves. We took our time and played in a little over 3 hours. Afterwards, we went in and enjoyed a nice breakfast and hot coffee. Staff is great too.
See you next year!

bFavourite Niagara area course

I try to get out here at least 3 or 4 times a season. I played twice this month, Oct 1 and Oct 16. This is a great Stanley Thompson designed track...a great old style design. The course is still in great shape considering it's mid-October. The fairways were a bit soggy yesterday, resulting in a few "fat" shots but we were still able ride out to our balls. (90° rule). Greens were in nice shape. It wasn't busy but it was a fairly chilly Monday. Not many leaves on the course for mid-October, but then again, a lot of the trees are pines. People complain about the helicopters but I've played here enough times that I've learned to tune them out. :)
Staff is great here, always treat us very well. Excellent restaurant too! Great food! Can't wait for next season!

Good course for the money

I've been playing here a lot this summer and the course has been in very good shape However, I noticed the rough has been left a bit longer the last couple of weeks resulting in slower play as we had to hunt for balls. Also noticed that the greens, which have been great all year, are getting pretty pock - marked. Not the course's fault but rather the inconsiderate people who don't bother to fix their ball marks.
All that being said, i do enjoy playing here as the course has some challenging holes. We usually enjoy breakfast after the round too. Food is good and well priced. I'm sure we'll be back a few more times this year.

Great shape despite the draught

The tees, fairways and greens were unbelievably green. The greens were putting fairly true but we found them to be a bit inconsistent speedwise. That all being said, we had an enjoyable round, done in just under 4 hours. Could have been a bit faster as the twosome that joined us spent a lot of time looking for their errant shots. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We stopped for lunch after the round and found the food to be quite reasonable and good. I hadn't played here in years and and this was my second time in the last month. Try it out, I think you'll like it.

Classic course, friendly, helpful staff

Let me start by saying that I love this course. I live about 35 miles away but I try to play it a couple of times a month . The course is a classic Stanley Thompson design, no trickery involved. No meandering cart paths to get to the next hole. Lots of trees but you'll be able to find your ball if you happen to hit into them. Two of the prettiest holes are number 2 and 18. The fairways are always well watered and green, while the greens are fast and true. I do find the greens to be somewhat "pockmarked" by unfixed ballparks in the summer but that's probably due to the amount of playing they get and a small percentage of inconsiderate golfers. Golf Now deals are usually pretty good, hence the reason I play it as often as I do.

I have to make a comment about the staff. A few weeks ago, my playing partner thought we were playing the next day. I phoned him 10 minutes before our tee time only to find that he had just woken up. Seeing as he lived a 45 minute drive away, I asked the staff if there would be a problem. They were very accommodating and as soon as he arrived, they fit us right in. Just great service in my books!

This year, we started hitting the restaurant after our game. Food is pretty decent, beer is cold and prices are moderate. It also gives you a great view of the 18th green.

I highly recommend this place. In fact, I'm heading out to play it again today!

First Time Playing

Not too pleased....

Let me start by saying that the night before we played, we had a lot of rain.
I booked the tee time the evening before we played and it was one of those "hot deals" on Golf Now. It was a very good deal. When we got to the course, we were told that the course was too wet to allow carts. I have Achilles Tendonitis and cannot walk a course anymore. If I try, I am barely able to walk for days afterwards. Anyway, I told them as much and asked if they could make an exception and they said "no, we have no cartpaths". I told the pro that I can't walk the course and he just kind of dismissed me. He could have offered a refund or rain check, but didn't. So we went out to play, knowing that I would pay for it later. They were correct in saying that it was very wet, but there were cartpaths throughout the course, not everywhere, but a good 80% of it. I could have stayed in the rough elsewhere. Anyway except for the wet conditions, the course was in pretty decent shape except for the greens. The greens were covered in worm castings, not just a few but literally covered!! Taking a leaf blower to the greens in the morning could have made them playable. Someone in a previous review mentioned the worm castings too. Anyway, we soldiered on and at the turn, I had enough, I just couldn't walk any further. We decided to pack it in.

I'm just really peeved that we weren't offered a refund or raincheck before we started. We got the feeling that they wanted us to suck it up or go home. They had their money and a handful of golfers, just enough to pay the staff for the day. All I know is that I won't be going back again. Just poor customer service. Stay away!

Great shape after a busy summer

I used to try to get at least 5-6 rounds in at Whirlpool each year as I love the "old style" courses and this is one of the nicest in the area. However, due to the amount of play that it gets in the summer, the greens always resembled the lunar surface with ball marks left by inconsiderate golfers. Well, this was my first round at the course this year and it was in great shape, fairways were manicured and greens were smooth. The only place that could use some work were the sand traps...probably could use a bit more sand. Of course there's still the sound of helicopters flying overhead but after a while, you learn to tune them out. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I'll have to go back one more time this year!

Great course for a quick round

I've played at Southbrook for many years. Not so often in the last 10-12 years though. The course is fairly wide open with trouble looming if you stray too much. The greens are great....receptive and very smooth. The tee boxes were a little chewed up on this day but one could still find an area to tee up their ball. What they really lack is a great irrigation system. Being out in the country, they don't have anyplace to draw enough water to make this a "lush" golf course. The fairways tend to be a little hard. However, for a short hitter like myself, I appreciate the extra 20-30 yards that I get on my drives!!. Like I said, the greens are receptive so it doesn't alter your game too much. It's a very decent track and it is fun to play

Great course but requires some maintenance

I love this course even though I'm not a long hitter. That being said, I was a little disappointed with the condition of the course. The greens were just full of unfixed ball marks and the fairways were chewed up with divots. I realize that this is not the courses fault but maybe they need to post signs all around the greens to remind people to fix their ball marks. They also need to add the seed mix bottles back onto the carts. This particular day was very slow as there were a few groups of walkers ahead of us and this course is not a good walking course as there are some long walks between holes at times. We also played on July 1st and were done in 3 1/2 hours on that day.

Nice course but needs some serious TLC

This once was, and could still be a nice course if they would put some cash into it. I played it twice in a 2 week span and was not impressed. The tees were all chewed up, we found ourselves having to move the tee markers. The traps were rough with little sand in them. Greens were okay but a little pock-marked from inconsiderate golfers. We got part way down the first hole and the charge light came on in our cart. We found the cart was struggling to climb hills. We called the Pro shop to let them know and we were told that they were all like that. We finally got a new cart on the back nine and it was slower than the first! We had the same problem a week later...very slow carts that make for long rounds. Then we had a cart girl who tried to squeeze by our cart and scraped the side of it.
All in all, I won't be going back this year. I'll try them again in the spring and see if any thing has improved.
