White Lake Oaks Golf Course
Played On 08/16/2015Average Oakland County Course, VERY Long Cut Rough
Very strange course with some ridiculously designed holes for first timers of the course. There was barely difference in yardage between the mids and tips, and playing from the tips isn't a problem since this is a pretty short course (some sub-300 yd par 4s from the back tees). With that being your only advantage, you will be punished poorly for missing the tight fairways. The rough was cut at a ridiculously high length, so be prepared to lose many balls (or take much longer to find them) as well as find others' lost balls. Hitting out of the rough also took a considerable amount of power off your shot, so be prepared to club up at certain points. The moment your ball touches the rough it'll come to a dead stop. Very troublesome if you can't carry your shots well, which is painful to experience because the ball would roll for days on the fairway. I would not recommend this course for those that have trouble hitting the fairway with their tee shots or topping the ball, but would be fun for golfers that have better control and don't mind the unforgiving conditions on the course. Pace of play was surprisingly okay for how packed the course was, it's just a little unnerving seeing groups everywhere on such a compact course. The back definitely played harder than the front as others have said, so be prepared for some very tricky shots towards the end of your round. I also thought some of the greens were noticeably smaller than other courses in the area (especially on the par 5s), but they were in very good condition. I don't have any desire to play this course over any others in the area, so I would recommend this as a backup over any of the other Oakland County courses. If you have great control on your shot you don't have much to worry about, otherwise if you are less experienced like I am pick a more forgiving course in the area.
Brae Burn Golf Club
Played On 08/07/2015Good pace of play
Have played Brae Burn a few times this year and overall it has a decent variety of holes and I've experienced a fast pace of play until the last few holes every time. There are definitely some tricky holes and the course has more than its fair share of difficult greens. Grass bunkers around a lot of the greens so that saves some trouble. A very long course from the tips but I heard that they moved up the mids, which makes for much shorter par 3s and takes 150+ yards off The Monster. The course also has larger holes on each green marked by a yellow flag (to speed up slow golfers), which is something you must be conscious of when first playing so that you hit at the correct hole. I have only played in good weather so I cannot confirm what others have said about issues with standing water from rain, but there are some holes with destroyed sections of fairways. The clubhouse is nothing special with average priced food and drinks, easy to get something quick at the turn. Also, the course is located next to a dump and shooting range, so not the best surrounding scenery. Great value if you can catch a hot deal, I would look for other courses nearby if only the full price is available.
Farmington Hills Golf Club
Played On 06/10/2015Good course, horrible management
Overall a well kept course, but a nightmarish pace of play. Took over an hour to play the first two holes due to the ridiculously overbooked number of groups ahead of our tee time. Was a fairly easy, well kept course, but every staff member had a different explanation as to why the pace of play was so slow when clearly there were too many golfers on the course. The starter and rangers didn't do anything to help the situation other than complain to us as well. Would not go back until I knew that it wasn't a busy time, but even that would be impossible to tell as there were still tee times available here around the time we started, so it could have been even worse!
