Winding River Golf Club
Played On 11/3/2013good value, wide array of skill array, confusing layout but scenic
My friend and I rode 18 on a Sunday. Pace was steady, but not crowded. No water, a few sand traps, and a good amount of trees along the fairways. A couple of the greens were chewed up as well as some of the tee boxes. Otherwise, the course was in pretty good shape for a city course. One of the relatively newer and nicer city courses in Indy. Nice scenery, a lot of rolling hills. Good value overall.
South Grove Golf Course
Played On 10/20/2013one of the better city courses, few hazards other than trees,
Two friends and I rode 18 on a Sunday. Great weather that day, the course was steady but not too busy. Really good city course, and the greens were in surprisingly good shape for an inner city course. Oldest city course in Indy. Fairways are pretty open, and there few hazards other than the trees. Fairways could have been a little bit shorter. Course in pretty flat overall. Good value!
Elwood Golf Links
Played On 9/21/2013Excellent value, great for an average golfer; front 9 needs a little attention though from a maintenance standpoint
Two of my friends and I played Cattails on a Saturday afternoon. We booked the tee time through Golf Now on Thursday for $10 each, 18 holes including cart! One of the best deals I have ever seen! The man working at the pro shop was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He was personable, he gave us free bags of tees, and he added water to the unique golf ball/golf club cleaners mounted on the gas golf carts. The feel of the course when you first get there is very casual considering the old clubhouse, dress code, and the practice range. The "range" is simply 5 or 6 slots in between 2 fairways; there are no pins or target areas. The front nine is a links style course from the 20's with one water hazard, a limited number of sand traps, some trees lining the fairway but no heavy woods. The fairways on the front 9 are pretty forgiving, but the grass was high. Some of the greens and tee off boxes on the front nine need more attention. We stopped in the pro shop for snacks after the front nine. The selection is very limited. The back nine is the hiddem gem of this course and is what makes the value so great. The back nine, which is a much more modern, broader layout is worlds apart from the front nine. The fairways and greens were in great shape and the tee boxes were not as chewed up as the front nine. Cornfields and heavy woods line some of the fairways, and there are also much more sandtraps, but there are few hazards otherwise. Overall, the course (particularly the back nine) is a great value. There are nicer courses in the area, but Cattails is a perfect course for an average golfer trying to build their game.
Fall Creek Golf Club
Played On 9/5/2013Great value; fairways and rough could be cut shorter, driving range is not good
I've played this course several times. Usually I ride if I'm with a friend, otherwise I like to walk if I'm by myself. Pretty flat overall except for the western edge of the course which has some steep hills. No water hazards, few sand traps, but most of the fairways have trees on either side. The fairways are usually a little high, and some of the greens can be a little chewed up. Driving range is very narrow and impractical because of the target placement within the rolling hills. Interesting views of the penitentiary. No water coolers; gas carts are a little noisy. Some nice mature trees and scenery overall. Can't beat the value!
Saddlebrook Golf Club
Played On 8/10/2013great value, soggy tee boxes, matted sand traps, houses are sometimes close
My friend and I rode 18 on a Sunday. Standard city course overall. Nothing particularly special outside the good value. We lost several balls in the water on the front 9 and we hit a few balls into some backyards on the back 9. Back 9 is pretty woodsy while the front 9 is more open. Wide array of skills. The day we played the back 9 got backed up pretty fast. The tee boxes were very soggy from over-watering. Course needs some attention, but nothing major. Decent value overall.
Brookshire Golf Club
Played On 5/25/2013Good value; well-maintained; there are a few creeks to lose balls
My friend and I rode 18 in May. The driving range could be a bit wider and we should have brought a ball retriever for some of the balls we lost in the creeks, especially on the front 9. There were a few times when our balls got pretty close to the houses and backyards on certain holes. Nice course overall, beautiful mature trees (especially the sycamores on the southeast corner of the course). There are more pristine courses in Carmel, but it's hard to beat the prices at Brookshire, particularly through Golfnow.
