Connemara Golf Course
Played On 04/30/2017Rough round of golf
Played on a very windy afternoon. It had rained that morning, so I will give the groundskeepers the benefit of the doubt and assume they had planned to mow the rough that morning. The wind put quite a few of my drives in the rough (...and I'm sticking to that story). Of the balls I could find that landed in there, it wasn't much fun hitting out of. Enough said.
Other than that, the fairways and greens were in good shape,. It's a mostly open course, with a fair amount of sloping fairways and greens. I've played it a few time, and the pace has always been pretty quick: about 3.5 hrs.
Houston Oaks Golf Course
Played On 09/02/2016Great Course
Once of the best courses in central Kentucky for layout, features and beauty. Lots of challenges such as blind shots, water (if you hit to the left, the back nine will punish you), a few bunkers, slopes in all directions and a few tight fairways. Greens play very well, particularly for early September.
My only complaint was the pace of play. Too many golfers holding things up.
Longview Golf Course
Played On 08/13/2016Couse could use some water
I've played this course many times. It's best features are lots of elevation changes from tee box to green, and large water bodies to hit over. I keep coming back because it's a short drive from home and fun to play.
This was the worst overall condition I recall the course being in. Very hard fairways (club down because you will get a lot of roll out), and the greens were rough in places. They didn't even bother to put rakes in the sand traps. I'll be back, but it may be in the fall after a few good soakings.
Thank you for the kind review. We are glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you again soon!
Cherry Blossom Golf Course & Country Club
Played On 04/17/2016Great course that needs some TLC
Cherry Blossom is one of the top courses in central Kentucky. It has a little bit of everything; open fairways, narrow fairways, protected greens, uphill drives, downhill drives, sloping and undulating greens, water, hazards in strategic locations, etc. It's in an attractive location, and the layout flows easily. All that being said, I hadn't been there in over a year, and was surprised by the condition of the course. Granted, it is mid-April after an extended cold spell, but the fairways were dry as a bone, and the greens were pretty rough and didn't play true the way I remember from past rounds. Hopefully, this was anomaly and the course will be back in shape by summer. I still recommend this course based on how much fun it is.
Boone's Trace National Golf Club
Played On 02/06/2016Very playable in February
This is a well maintained course in an attractive residential setting. Not a lot of hazards, but a fair amount of slope, particularly around some of the greens. Overall, a fun course to play.
We had a mid-morning tee time on an unusually warm (reached the high 40's) winter day. We had to wait about 45 min before the course superintendent would let anyone on the course due to a very light frost in the shade. Rather than seeing this as a negative, I see this as a reflection of how well they care for this course.
Peninsula Golf Resort
Played On 08/30/2015Worth the Trip
It's a bit out of the way, but a fun course to play (particularly for a bogey golfer like me). It has a decent amount of slopes to work with, mostly open fairways and semi to unprotected greens. A few tricky doglegs. The course sits above the surrounding hillside with constantly a shifting breeze. Given that it hadn't rained much recently the fairways were still fairly green, but they did give a lot of roll out on the low shots. The greens were in very good condition and they played true, which is a good thing, as quite a few of them are sloped.
Dale Hollow Lake Golf Course
Played On 06/14/2015Scenic and Challenging
Overall, this is one of the nicest courses I've ever played. It's challenging with lots of slopes in all directions, significant elevation changes from tee box to green, bunkers right where you want to hit your tee shot, bunkers protecting greens, greens placed next to drop offs, undulating greens, some narrow sections of fairway and a few water features (on the back nine) to hit over.
The course is very well maintained. The only negative was some of the bunkers were poorly draining and eroding. It looked like a couple were being rebuilt from the subgrade on up, which suggests they want to correct it and not just throw some more sand on top to get through the season.
The course itself is thoughtfully nestled into rolling woodlands with some grand views of the surrounding hills. Wild turkeys and pheasants on the course offer an additional distraction to an already challenging course. Nature lovers will be in awe of this place.
Old Silo Golf Club
Played On 01/17/2015Very good condition for January
Played on a warm sunny day (low 50's) in January. Fairways were a bit brown, but still played well. Greens had recovered from fall aeration, and were as good as one can expect for this time of year.
This is a fun and scenic course to play, any time of the year. Lots of variety in slope and elevation changes between holes. A few streams to cross/aviod, and lots of bunkers. Because of it's layout, I wouldn't recommend this for walkers.
Thoroughbred Golf Club at High Point
Played On 10/12/2013Ok course for something different
The course is in fair condition. Mostly open with few hazards. Several stream crossings and one pond, but easy to manage. Several fairways slope sideways adding some challenge. The back nine is more scenic and interesting. Staff was super friendly. Worth the value with the Golf Now discount.
Southwind Golf Course
Played On 5/18/2013Good course to play if you have limited time.
Fairly short course (6200 yds from tips). Several fairways have a bit of side slope to challenge your shots. Attractive rolling hills. Water comes into play on a few holes. I don't recall any bunkers on the course. My only complaint is that the grass in the fairway was a bit high. I had to hunt for my ball in the fairway more than once. It has been a wet month, so maybe it's not an issue during the summer. I plan to play it again some time.
Nine Hole at Bright Leaf Golf Resort
Played On 2/18/2013A bit out of the way, but worth the trip
We played the 18 hole course. It has a lot of open fairways, and except for a few dog-legs, the flag is visible from the tee box on most holes. On the day we played there was a moderate breeze, which given the openess of the course, didn't surprose me. Considering it is late winter, the course was in very good shape. It's not the most scenic or interesting course (might be prettier in the summer), but is has a very playable conventional feel, and is great for focusing on your game. I'll be back.
Duckers Lake Golf Course
Played On 12/23/2012Fun to play for a change
This course has a combination of coventional holes with striaght fairways and simple doglegs, mixed with some odd challenging holes with squeeze points guarded by rough/woods, streams and ponds. Slopes come into play in most holes. One word of advice - bring hand sanitizer. Seriously. This is not a joke. Some of the holes have a serious Canada Goose problem. When I played (Dec 2012), the 16th green was literally unplayable. If the goose problem was resolved, I would have given the course 4 stars instead of 3.
Thank you for playing and your patience on the course. Enjoy the rest of your golf season.
