Stewart Peninsula Golf Course
Played On 03/05/2022Pleasant surprise
First time playing here and was pleasantly surprised by the course. 9 holes with double greens and two (usually close) markers on the tee boxes for each 9. It's always enjoyable to play by water and most of the course has views of the lake, if it isn't right on the lake, and often has water as a boundary or crossing the hole. The layout is interesting and makes you think, particularly on the par 4's and the one par 5 if the wind is up. Conditions are scrappy at times but for the price they are good. Never had to worry about hitting anyone on the other side of the double greens as the tee time system worked well and pace of play, even on a Saturday, was no problem. Compared to the other courses across the lake (Old American, the Tribute, and Frisco Lakes), this course easily gives you equal if not more bang for the buck.
The Club at Savannah Harbor
Played On 06/05/2021Greens need serious TLC
Very good layout where the winds affect how many holes play. Two long holes on the front -- the first par 3 and the last par 5 -- are monsters in terms of length. Course play s very fair if you can keep the ball in the usually generous fairways. The big problem with the course is the greens which are uniformly terrible. Tough winter conditions, perhaps some fungus, and likely less than optimal maintenance have left them spotty and bumpy and really takes the fun out of getting the ball on the green. They likely need aeration and time to grow as they are not in shape for the $ which are charged. Would play it again when the greens are back to normal
Salishan Golf Links
Played On 07/23/2020Excellent greens
This is not a links course by any stretch of the imagination as the front 9 is parkland with elevations changes and the back allows a few water views but overall this is an interesting and challenging track. The greens are in great shape and roll true and fast. There are still some conditioning issues in that some of the fairways can be shaggy and a few bunkers had grass growing in them, probably as a result of the cutbacks in staff when the pandemic hit. This is also one of the few courses where there are still rakes in the bunkers if you care to use them. Only downside is the presence of mowed grass clumps in many fairways which can give you some very funky shots with the grass stuck to you ball. Still a great layout and I'd play it again just for the greens alone.
Wedgwood Country Club
Played On 05/10/2019Not much different as course conditions have always been an issue
After reading the reviews I was prepared for a course which is in worse shape than I found it. Truth be told, this has never been the best maintained course and that's true going back over 20 years. There have been times where it's been better and they are easily on the lower end of the scale at present as some tee boxes are pretty ragged and fairways, perhaps due to the rain, can have some bare spots. Bunkers are the same as ever, meaning that sometimes it's best to chip out instead of trying the traditional sand shot and some are filled with water after a good rain. The layout of the course remains the selling point as the tree lined holes require precision off the tee. Also the greens, while a little slower than in the past, are a strength. And #13 remains one of the more difficult holes in the region.
The Golf Club At Fossil Creek
Played On 06/01/2018Nice course
Really nice layout. Greens need to be worked on as they were bumpy for long putts and you could see the small ant protrusions in many greens that would cause the long putts to bump, bump, bump. This course has, as many, been encroached over the years by houses and there was active construction on some holes. The view on the scorecard is no longer available due to the addition of townhomes. Still a very good golf course with some very scenic holes against the creek and worth playing.
The Golf Club At Fossil Creek
Played On 06/01/2018Fun course
First time at this course and will return. Fairways were in great shape, plush and the ball sitting up perfectly. The only negative was the greens as they are probably due for a punching. Long putts would bounce a few times as there were small dirt piles on the green which made them inconsistent from hole to hole. I imagine they are great in top condition but likely need some work at present. That being said, the layout was really fun and some of the holes that cross the creek were worth a picture. Despite the number of people on the course pace of play was adequate -- 4 hours for a friday afternoon is not terrible and the worst offenders were only a hole behind max.
Tour 18 Dallas
Played On 08/14/2017They should raise a flag when the course is in good shape because it happens so infrequently
4th time here and I've never seen the course in great shape. Understandably they just got 4 inches of rain the past couple days so it was cart path only and several bunkers were flooded. Still, there's no practice green as it had to be harvested for replacing course greens after a "bad winter" (don't know what that means as there was no snow and some hard freezes but my course had excellent greens all winter) and they still haven't been able to grow enough grass back to provide a putting surface? Bunkers were trashed after the recent rain but last year I played and the bunkers weren't in great shape despite the rest of the course being OK. Greens are always an issue as I've always heard that they have fast greens but last time I played prior to today (2 weeks after punched) they were just as slow and you could leave a 30 foot putt on a 20 degree downward slope 10 feet short. Was once probably a great track of imitation holes but I've never had the luck to show up when the stars align for that day.
Wildhorse Golf Club of Robson Ranch - South/West Course
Played On 07/14/2017Perfect greens this time
I play here a few times a year when my private course, known for it's immaculate greens, has a member-member or rare outside event in which I don't play. I've always thought that this course is pretty easy for the better player and still continue to think that. That being said I was very impressed by the conditions today, particularly the greens which were fast and true. The fairways are as wide as always and if you got very wayward they were penal as they should be but the greens were truly a pleasure to putt and much better than in the past! If I were retired I wouldn't mind playing here every day.
Old American Golf Club
Played On 01/21/2017Interesting course worth playing once
First time at Old American. Have played it's neighbor The Tribute many times. Overall it's a very nice course with many views of the lake that are scenic. Seemed like they had many "redan" style greens, less the slope element, in that they were narrow, long, and often angled. Greens generally rolled nice even in the dead of winter. Bunkers were terrible perhaps due to the recent rains but no excuse for that condition on a course like this. "Signature snacks" were granola bars, cheez its, and bags of trail mix to go with the included soda, water, and gatorade. No cart girl on the course so that aspect pails in comparison to Cowboys, which is about the only other area course that dares to charge as much as Old American. Worth playing once if you get a deal but not rushing back to spend $150 in the summer no matter the views.
Black Pearl Golf Course at Pristine Bay Resort
Played On 11/25/2015Good second time around
Returned to play the Black Pearl after four years and was not disappointed. Much of the "others" remain a work in progress, such as the cart paths and even the pro shop, which moved downstairs but is still too small for a course of this stature. The course has matured nicely and despite the recent (including the day of play) rains drained generally well. Very well maintained. Greens were slower than I would have liked but generally true and smooth. Best aspect was that they removed the ridiculous tree in the middle of the fairway on #16, although Dye probably kicked and screamed about that. Highly recommend this course which while giving you ocean views also has significant elevation changes. Will challenge the novice but this course can be had if you're an intermediate or good golfer.
Cozumel Country Club
Played On 11/24/2015Too wet (again)
2nd time playing this course, both times in the fall to winter. Last time the par 4 1st was shortened to a par 3 due to the fairway being flooded. While it was a par 4 for this latest round, the course itself should have been closed except for the small fact that there were 6 cruise ships in port and money was to be made. Hole 16 is a prime example. The tee box was pure mud and you sank a good 2 inches, if not more, as you're ready to tee off. Nice drive in the fairway plugs almost to the point of being lost. Slosh across the fairway, find the ball, and there's no point of relief within at least 50 yards so you hit the ball out of the muck. Here's the other joke (see the picture). 16 of 18 of the flags were tucked at furthest 4 yards from the edge of an otherwise huge green and usually over or on top of a massive ridge. So you hit either a shorter shot that plugs in the green leaving you with an uphill to downhill/sidehill putt that begs for a clown mouth and windmill or you do like I did and hit flag high and watch the ball bounce off the downslope and finish in the mud 10 yards over the green. The 2 other pin placements were also borderline and the overall experience was a joke but was not amusing by the time you got through the first 6 holes and realized what the staff was doing to (I guess) attempt to preserve the greens given the damp. I realize that it's the rainy season and they had been swamped for the past 3 days but there's no way the course should have been open, and if you didn't use Golfnow ($99) they'd want you to pay upwards of $150 to ruin a good pair of golf shoes. At best you had to slog through or around the mud which had taken over the rough to get to a fairway but more often than not it was mud through and through. Not playing here again if I return to Cozumel even in the "dry" season whenever that might be.
