Sunbird Golf Resort
Played On 08/05/2023Give it a shot
Although this course is somewhat short, don’t that that dissuade you from giving it a shot. There are many challenging angles and risk/reward type shots. A great course for short iron development. The staff is very friendly and the clubhouse area is nice as well. We will continue to play for sure!
Ken McDonald Golf Course
Played On 05/28/2023Great track! But off-course amenities need work.
Even though this is a municipal course, the layout is challenging. The benefit is that there is no desert to have to deal with. The challenge (if you look at it that way), is mature trees everywhere! This course rewards decent shots. Hit it too far left or right, and there’s almost a certainty of a lost stroke or two. Pro shop staff is very nice and accommodating. Course Marshall’s do their best to keep pace of play on track. Although, during this visit we experienced slow play and had to wait 3-5 minutes on each hole. Not a huge deal because we were having fun. After the round, we went into the bar area for a drink and found the attention underwhelming. We were the only people at the bar and the bartender asked two out of the three of us what we’d like to drink, then walked away. Maybe because we were adults and my son apparently didn’t need anything? He wanted to order food, but was never given the opportunity. We were ignored until we had to stand up and walk over to her to get some service for him. We ended up only getting him a drink because we feared if we ordered food, we’d never get it. Not to mention the prices seem very high. $11 for a hot dog? The bartender was also yawning the entire time, so maybe it was a late night for her and serving customers was too much work. I’ll skip the after-round amenities there going forward. Plenty of places to stop on the way home.

Played On 05/14/2023Getting a little crusty
Played back-to-back weekends and noticed the greens were in much worse condition the second time I played. They were very dry with a lot of sand. To the point where you could hear the ball rolling as you putt. Many times, the ball would not track very straight and would wobble on its line. This lead to challenging scoring opportunities. Not in a good way. Fairways were wet in parts and very dry in others, but overall ok for the most part. Course staff is some of the friendliest I’ve encountered and surely make the experience enjoyable.

Played On 09/04/2022It’s crunchy out there
This is my second time playing in two weeks at Lone Tree. We enjoy this course and have fun playing it. On this occasion though, it was pretty dry and crunchy. The greens were a mix of shaggy grass and bare patches. It was a challenge to roll the ball consistently. The price of the round didn’t really measure up to the condition of the course in my opinion. There was also a team of landscapers pruning trees and cutting down dead limbs. We had the honor of having them use a large, trailered wood chipper directly behind the tee while we attempted to tee off. Not to mention, they would honk horns at each other and yell to each other. That made it tough on some holes. We still had a decent time and will return.

We play here weekly. The cub is a great course for tuning your short game or playing with junior golfers (or both)! My iron play and short game have improved dramatically from playing this course so often. The issue I have is the after-golf amenities. We usually like to play in the morning and have lunch in the bar area after our round. On several occasions, including this most recent time, we have sat at one of the tables for nearly 10 minutes with no acknowledgment from the staff. It wasn’t like it was busy, either. There was a table of four, a table of one, and us. The two girls working were standing behind the bar on their phones talking and laughing. Occasionally, an older gentleman would stop by and chit-chat some more. All while paying customers sat waiting. We ended up walking out (pretty sure without being noticed) and stopped by Lone Tree to grab some lunch. A much better experience. We will no longer be staying to eat after our rounds going forward. I suggest you don’t waste your time and money doing it either. Unless getting crappy service is something you enjoy.
Grass Clippings at Rolling Hills
Played On 03/13/2022Not Easy!
Don’t let the length of this course fool you. It is not easy by any means. This course will reward great shots, and about 50% of the good ones. The rest, get ready to scramble. Hit it badly, and you’re going to pay! Tees are either above or below the green height on most holes, fairways are sloped, and greens are small and sloped. A great course to challenge your shot-making ability. You can choose to go for the greens on par 4’s, but if it’s off only a little bit, you most likely will lose your ball, or at very least a stroke or two. A real risk/reward type layout. Definitely going to try it again. Good luck!

My two boys (ages 5 and 8) and I play this course weekly. It is perfect for them to learn the game and get out on an actual course without the stress of holding people up. They have tees specifically for new golfers and children. The white tees are 65 to 100 yards from the greens making it ideal for kids. The staff greatly encourages children to play and go out of their way to make sure they have fun. The last time we were there, multiple staff members took time to talk with my kids and encouraged them to have fun. We will continue to go here for sure!
