Neshanic Valley Golf Course - Meadow/Lake Course
Played On 08/01/2023Great layout, but pace of play can be a struggle
This is a great 27 hole layout with great variety and normally good conditions. The greens on this day were pretty slow, but the foot drags, divots and overall conditions of the greens were disappointing. As usual, the staff was indifferent. Not rude, not friendly. They seem almost annoyed that they are forced to ring up your transaction. The pace of play was awful on this day. Waits on every tee. Course was jampacked, so perhaps spread the tee times out by an extra minute or two. This is the jewel of the Somerset County courses, but needs to stay on top of their game, lest they become like the others.
The Architects Golf Club
Played On 10/18/2020Usually a favorite course, but.......
I generally recommend this course to friends, especially if you can get a tee time midweek at a reasonable price. When the weekend rolls around and they jack up the prices, the experience goes from good to poor. First of all, the greens were spiked and top-dressed. No course should be charging full boat under those circumstances. You also can't be stacking tee times every 8 minutes. However, if you are you need to control the pace of play. 5 hours, 35 minutes for a round of golf is ridiculous. Some of the crazy pin placements and the fact that it was a windy day, did not help. I realize you folks took it on the chin during the pandemic, but don't try to make all your money back in a month. I have always liked this course, but I would only recommend that you play it midweek.
Locust Valley Golf Club
Played On 08/02/2020The course has great bones, but needs work.
This is a fun layout that requires you to shape your shots. It feels very tight on a lot of holes, but some of that is deceptive. Do not try to bite off the corner of the doglegs. The trees are all tall and will pick off your golf ball. The course was understandably wet after a downpour, but they still have some serious drainage issues, especially the bunkers. The staff is reasonably friendly. It might be the strangest setup when you first arrive at the course. There are multiple barns and multiple parking lots which may or may not contain a clubhouse. The signage is really bad, so you just have to wander around until you find an employee or fellow golfer. I just followed other golfers across three parking lots before I found the clubhouse. Be extremely careful as you cross the active roadway to the first tee. You come out of a blind alley and cars are sometimes flying by as you try to cross the road.
Even with that, the course has some charm and plenty of difficulty. One area of improvement that they should consider is how the course is set up on the weekends. My group played from the blue tees(6247 yards). 15 of the blue tees were set up right next to the black tees(over 6700 yards). This coupled with the course being extremely wet, made the course play 7000+ yards. On weekends, always shorten the course for faster play, especially when it is wet. (I asked my foursome to move up to the white tees(5750 yards) but they refused) Pin setup was very fair with no tucked pins, which is great for weekend play. Our round took 4 1/2 hours, but a lot of that had to do with cart paths only, due to the rainstorm that morning. I would play again and would love to see money poured into this interesting course.
