Wigwam Resort - Red Course
Played On 11/15/2017Always a great course and excellent this time of year
I was lucky enough to find a "Hot Deal" for this course as peak season starts, and for the value this is a treasure to play. Weather is perfect, and the overseed has taken full bloom and excellent care. Pace of play was pretty good considering a busy day, and the group I was paired with matched my skill level and was congenial and pleasant, very friendly. The greens rolled true, and were of medium to quick pace (I prefer slightly quicker greens, so this was good for me). All in all, a great golf day!
Villa de Paz Golf Course
Played On 09/23/2017Always a good round for the value
Many courses in the AZ area are in transition season (thatching and changing to winter grasses), and this course in that transition now. However, I find that the thatched grass plays surprisingly well and I actually get a longer run-out and better lie than when the regular grass is growing. The greens continue to be in better condition than expected and roll pretty quick (which I like) and true. Still, this course is one where you better keep it in the fairways (which are narrower than most I have played), and best way to play well is not to try to bomb every drive, but rather use good course management and play for accuracy, not distance. Fairways are lined with lots of trees and houses to get in your way, so beware. Some cart path areas are paved and pretty good, but much of the course pathways tend to be bumpy and rough. Basic summary is, that this is a really good course for the cheap greens fees, and just fine for honing your game for accuracy.

This course is getting better and better; the fairways are healthy and lush, the greens are beautiful. Course condition is the best I've ever seen since playing this track and the play experience feels like a high end course. Cart paths are pretty rough, though, but hardly a deal breaker. The bar is also one of the best around for a 19th hole, with great food and excellent service; also a nice outside seating area to enjoy the pleasant Arizona spring weather. It's a short track, but perfect for a quick round without too much fuss, and even has two par-5's for the full experience that golf should be. I played solo on a weekday afternoon and finished the round in 2hr 15min. Yes, all 18-holes! This is definitely one of my favorite West Valley courses to play.
Legend at Arrowhead, The
Played On 03/14/2017Beautiful Course - But Horrible Pace of Play
Let me start by saying that I love this course, it's one of my favorite in the valley. the layout is fun and challenging, and is visually beautiful with some awesome views from many of the tees. Course conditions are great and the greens roll smooth and fast. The bunkers are coarse and rocky, though, so either avoid them or prepare for some scratches on your wedges. Also, the bunker sand left on the green from previous players can make for some brushing away of small rocks before putting.
That being said, pace of play is a pet peeve of mine and this course peeved me to no end. I play pretty quickly, but was grouped with a foursome that I thought might meet the slower pace that an early afternoon in peak season is often found throughout the Valley of the Sun golf courses. But even with a "slow" foursome, we were held up on every tee box for up to 10 minutes at times. I noticed groups ahead of us hitting short , bad shots all over the place and taking too much time to advance down the fairway. It's not a course for the inexperienced player, IMHO. Not during peak season, anyway. This course estimated pace of play at 4hrs 20min, but our round took almost 5 and a half hours, because of holdups with groups ahead of us. I didn't see any course Marshall coaxing slow groups to pick up and advance as was warned on the play cards and cart placards, so this would be my main gripe about this course.
I love this course for it's design, excellent condition, and challenging layout, but it seems I'd be better off waiting to play it during the summer off-season when it's not so crowded with ultra-high handicappers or inexperienced players, and there's a reasonable expectation to finish a round in under 4 hours
Sun City Lakes Golf Club - West Course
Played On 03/10/2017Great coures, but pace of play could be better
I always like playing this course, it's always clean and well groomed and the holes offer enough challenge for the intermediate golfer while keeping it simple enough for the less-than-intermediate player. Only complaint was the pace of play, which was VERY SLOW. Granted, I was playing as a solo, but I was WALKING behind groups of 2 that had carts, and figured that would make up the difference. Yet I was waiting as much as 5-8 minutes on many holes and was only able to get 13 holes played before dusk came. All-in-all I didn't fret too much about it because of the great price for the round, and I will still play there many times. The key to improving your odds on pace of play is to plan your round for times when the course is likely to be open, like later afternoon on mid-weekdays.
Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
Played On 02/21/2017One of the nicer courses in the West Valley
Although the pace was very slow, the course was in great shape (except for the cart path demo). It was challenging enough for the intermediate player, but also simple enough for the less-skilled golfer. Par-5's all played dogleg left with just enough coaxing to want to cut corners over the water to save on ydge and look for those birdies. Not too many sand traps, but well positioned enough to warrant good course management during your round. The par-5's were all pretty similar in look, but the rest of the course had plenty of diversity and interest. There were lots of un-fixed ball marks on the greens, but they putted well; size and placement of the greens varied from large and open with dual-levels, to smaller targets that challenge your approach shots. Altogether one of my favorite West Valle courses, as long as pace of play is good.
Glen Lakes Municipal Golf Course
Played On 01/10/2017Basic Muni-course, Great Value For a Quickie 9
I've played this course several times in the last few months, and it has been a regular "go-to" when I want to get a quick 9 in during the week. The value is unmatched (especially the Hot Deal). Although the course is a little rough in areas, there is plenty of playability here and enough interest in the holes to offer a bit of a challenge for the mid-handicapper like myself. There's more par 4's than other 9-hole courses in the area, and they vary in coaxing the golfer to play draw or cut shots off the tee, and vary in length to allow for choices of club selection as well. The ability to opt for walking or cart is also beneficial, in case I want exercise or just play a quick round during lunch and head back to the office. Pace of play is pretty good, can sometimes be slower, but still not too bad, and slower players are always friendly enough to let faster players through.
The greens are average to small in size, with slight undulations, making it just enough of a challenge for dialing in the short game and making putts.
There are very few sand traps, so not much opportunity to work on that part of the game. Looks like there may have been a few around each green at one time, but they are now grass resembling the rough, and still very much a challenge to hit out of. Some of the tee boxes on the par 3's are offset by difficulty, so one day I'll play the blue tees, and another day the whites to offer distance variety and a different look at the holes.
For golfers like me who like to practice and hone their game on the course instead of the range, this location is a great option. You can basically play a round for what a large bucket of balls would be at a range. As I said, it's a perfect way to hone your actual course play without breaking the bank.
We appreciate your kind words and opinions of the golf course. We have been working hard over the last 6-8 months to improve the course conditions. We look forward to seeing you at the course in the future. ~HC
