Brickshire Golf Club
Played On 08/11/2019Seeing is Believing!
After a year away, I was super-impressed and genuinely happy to play 18 yesterday at Brickshire.
In Spring of 2018 before the resident ownership was fully realized, I was worried for the future of Brickshire GC.
I birdied #9 and found the improved conditions very conducive to good scoring!
Whereas some modern golfers simply REFUSE to fix their ballmarks, Brickshire greens roll far better than Viniterra now.
We drive 55 minutes one-way to enjoy New Kent courses: Best Golf County in Virginia!
Good sand, cold drinking water and lush green collars are finer points that many courses ingore.
Matt in the pro shop is far more pkeasant and engaging than the previous young man was.
Indeed, Brickshire 1999 is back!
The Royal Virginian Golf Course
Played On 06/04/2014Best Value in Richmond Golf
Played last week for the 2nd time in 30 days.. Greens are pretty fantastic right now. It was 89F and several staffers were watering the greens to keep them healthy.. VERY NICE TO SEE! For their efforts, the aeration holes are barely noticeable, the balls hold well and back up with wedges, and putts are true with no bobbling or bouncing.. Fantastic!
Certain Tee boxes remain a liability with Hole #3 ( a tough 179y Par 3) needing immediate attention.. and worse still, several tee box markers remain from the grand opening 20 years ago! Faded, damaged and needing replacement! Please!
Do Golf Course Owners/Managers even read these reviews?
On the PLUS side, RVGC has some of the best hole layouts in Central VA... e.g.: #1, #4 thru #8 and #11 & #12 are some of Virginia's most rewarding holes for long hitters.
Tips play 7,200 yds if you're game.
Great Nathan's Jumbo Hotdogs, well-priced cold beers and an always happy-to-see-you staff make RVGC well worth the drive...
The Royal Virginian Golf Course
Played On 04/29/2014Play Here!
Spectacular Layout..
Hard, fast greens but true rollers.
Some teeboxes were in great condition, others pitiful.
Played from the tips nearing 7,200 yards: feels like a US Open.
Quiet, secluded woodlands...
Poor driving range grass (if you can find any)
Tees were old, faded and cracked.. embarrassing.
Almost No Yardage Markers on sprinklers.
Good hotdogs, sandwiches and pleasant server.
Absolutely an A- for the Golfnow prices..
The Club At Viniterra
Played On 11/7/2013A great course even in late Fall conditions..
Played mid-week, mid-day and as usual Viniterra was an absolute pleasure to visit. Although most greens were heavy with falling leaves, that is golf in early November here. Still rolled true and quick.. Balls stopped nicely on approach shots. All but 2 Blue tee Boxes were in good shape. Rye overseed on 3 of them but that didn't affect us. Fairway and greenside bunkers were nicely mown and well-raked.. and plenty of good sand in this late season. The Staff always bring a cart and a smile to your car for loading... private club ambiance. Current Membership deal is the best on offer in the region. Range and Practice Area exceed any in Central Virginia. As always, a great Rees Jones design and a quiet, unhurried round. Go Play!
Queenfield Golf Club
Played On 9/11/2013Viniterra layout without the.moguls..
Just shot an 86 first time at this fine.course..
Nice conditions;, plenty of long carries, good chipping areas, decent greens (even better once aeration plugs grow in fully).
Really good grass range, sand trap and practice greens too.
Par 72 with wide fairways, good lies, raked traps, good teeboxes.
Every shot in the bag and even a few camera.shots.of the.deer on back nine. Go Play!
The Hollows Golf Club - Lake/Cottage
Played On 7/1/2013Certainly a pleasureable round for $20..
Very good layout of 3 nine-hole tracts.. some charming holes with lovely Virginia countryside views. Greens are lush and reasonably quick for July. Some poa anna creeping in which alters your ball's putted path; but only the most expensive courses have escaped the annual summer infestation of the grass. Still worth the $20 you pay mid-week. Great pub and cold water every 4 holes. Hard to beat the value although a few bare tee boxes need help. Overall, solid B course for the cost.. very quiet too.
Brookwoods Golf Club
Played On 5/6/2013Bring your B game... and that's not an insult. Great course for middle handicappers... tough tract for beginners though.
Love playing Brookwoods... Good conditions, great staff, true greens and a variety of hole layouts. Some teeboxes need returfing and yardage markers are rather rare. Front nine is mostly draw/right to left ball flights and back nine is the opposite... so you get to hit every shot. Some forced carries and some water but nothing unfair or scary for decent players... so you get to hit every club in the bag. Overall, a nice course you should def visit. Not overplayed and greens fees are low.
