The Club At Viniterra
Played On 10/24/2014Long, well-maintained course
This course has some long par 4's. I played from the middle set of tees and there were quite a few long par 4's and no notably short par 4's. The par 3's and par 5's were of reasonable length though. Choose your set of tees wisely. While the course is surrounded by woods in most places, there are some generous fairways rewarding marginal accuracy.
I would highly recommend this course if the price is right. I found a good deal on golfnow.com. It is located in a sort of "desert" for good golf on I-64, making it a good stopping point while traveling or visiting either Richmond or Williamsburg. Overall, I enjoyed the course and was impressed with its condition this late in the year.
Somerset Farms Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2014Friendly staff, but poor course conditions
This course was in very rough shape. Even a low price for a round may be overpriced. Many tee boxes and greens especially were in very bad shape.
As for how the course plays, the front plays fairly short but there are some narrow targets to hit at times and many of the greens are small. The back has a bit more length to it than the front. The staff was very friendly and helpful for someone making their first visit.
Crossings Golf Club
Played On 09/12/2014bunker-rific
I enjoyed my round at The Crossings, conveniently located near I-295 outside Richmond, VA. There were some fairways that could have been in better condition, but overall the course was well maintained. There were quite a few tree-lined fairways, punishing errant tee shots, as well as numerous large bunkers around many of the greens, some of which were quite large. Overall, players of all abilities could enjoy this course.
The Royal Virginian Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2014Quality course in central Virginia
The Royal Virginian was a pleasant surprise, just off I-64 in Louisa County, in a rural part of central Virginia between Richmond and Charlottesville. The clubhouse is quaint if not sparse, but the staff exuded southern hospitality. The course offers five sets of tees and plays fairly long from the back three sets. Between the tee options and the mix of holes, this course can accommodate different levels of golfers. I would not call the course tight, the fairways and rough are generous, but if you spray anything off the tee, there is a good chance it will find the woods. The greens were in good condition, good-sized and rolled true. I would recommend the Royal Virginian if you happen to be in that area or passing through.
The course is walkable, but there are some hikes between some holes.
