Gopher Hills Golf Course - Executive Nine
Played On 08/16/2017Improving conditions
Very rolling & hilly course. Tough walk. Lots of uneven lies. Fairways reasonably wide but very penal if you miss them. If you spray ball around, probably other courses would be more fun. Blind shots, especially on back. Helps a lot to have played this course b4. Sand traps have little sand in them, putt out if you can, otherwise chip it out. Greens have gotten better over last 2 yrs. Roll more consistently and at good speed. Good range. Tue is men's league so be done by 5:00. Otherwise unless there is a scheduled event, easy to get on, but call ahead. Often no cart service (ask), so stock up at clubhouse. Fun course to play. Not real long but does require some accuracy.
Gopher Hills Golf Course - Executive Nine
Played On 06/01/2017A different kind of course
GH as its' name implies is very rolling. You will seldom have a level lie here, even many of the fairways have considerable slope and undulation to them. Fairways are reasonably wide but the rough is the thickest & tallest of any area courses & very challenging to hit out of. Bunkers are hard w/little sand -putt out of if you can or use a chipping technique. Greens are reasonably fast and a highlight of the course. Also some excellent views of the surrounding farm country. Fair number of doglegs & blind shots, esp back 9, helps a lot if you have played it before. GH is inexpensive to play and worth playing a few times a year. Probably not a good course if you spray the ball around as you will spend a lot of time looking for your ball. Also recommend taking a cart as walking would be very challenging.
StoneRidge Golf Club
Played On 09/11/2016challenging higher end golf course
Stoneridge is unlike other courses in area in only a couple trees in play on the whole course. Wide fairways off T but quite a few holes have fairway sand bunkers and/or high prairie grass if you miss fairway. Assuming your not too wild off T, this course is all about your green approach shot and ability to putt fast & sloping greens. The greens are well protected with deep bunkers (often well below the green surface), high grass waste areas, false fronts that run off, etc. The day i played was very windy which made hitting greens more difficult. If you miss the green here. you are probably looking at double bogey or worse. Once on the green your challenge will be not to triple putt. I normally score in mid to upper 80s but shot a 101 on this windy day. Play from the proper T's. Ahead of us was 4 guys in late 20s/early 30s who were playing from blues and they slowed everyone else up because they were clearing playing from too far back relative to their skill level. I walked this course. It is not an easy walk but doable if you are in decent shape. Course is in great condition, practice area is good and they have a top notch (somewhat pricy) restaurant here.
Gopher Hills Golf Course - Executive Nine
Played On 08/23/2016Practice your uneven lie in deep rough game here
G.H. is hilly with very few spots you can find a somewhat level lie. And off the fairway, depending on when you play relative to their mowing schedule, you may not find your ball - 4 inch or higher rough (no exaggeration). Greens in good shape with fair amount of contour to them. Hole locations on a couple of greens were impossible. Sand traps are a disaster. G.H. is cheap to play so the overall value is O.K. Has some good scenic views of surrounding countryside.
Breezy Point Resort - Whitebirch Golf Course
Played On 07/30/2016Overpriced. Good 4 people who don't play much.
Convenient location if your staying at BP Resort. Course is fairly wide open so you can often get away with spraying shots (good for the infrequent golfer). Overall course condition was fair. I payed std rates which was not a good value for what you got. Would only play it again for sub $50 rate incl cart. Got on just after a large group outing had teed off and round was super slow. Hopefully this is not the std pace of play. They do have a very nice range and practice area.
my comments are for White Birch.

D.L. is an Arnold Palmer design and would be considered a high end course. I paid $100 + tax to play. The overall facilities are excellent incl the practice area. The course itself is challenging but not impossibly difficult. The fairways are generously wide but there is a good chance you won't find your ball if you miss them. It gets more difficult as you approach the greens with deep bunkers, marsh and other hazards surrounding the greens. There are some fantastic views and the course condition is excellent. Greens are fast with a fair amount of slope. Worth the experience if your budget allows.
Clifton Hollow Golf Club
Played On 06/10/2016Fun to plaY & not difficult
Fun course to play. Generous fairways and misses still playable on most holes. Good course for intermediate to higher handicap or beginning player. Course well maintained & greens decent rolling at moderate speed. Course can be buggy from mid summer on, so bring bug spray.
Thank you for the great review and tips, Scrapiron! We hope to see you again soon!
Gopher Hills Golf Course - Executive Nine
Played On 05/21/2016Very good value
G.H.is out in the country half way between Hastings and Red Wing. Features 2 very different 9'styles. Both are extremely hilly which make walking difficult. Front is links style & tends to be very windy while back is parkland style, some blind shots if you haven't played it before but also less exposed to the wind. You will face some uneven lie shots, especially on the back, even if in the fairway. Front has a lot of unmown areas if you miss the fairway that you generally can't play from if you were lucky enough to find your ball. The uneven lies and unplayable rough are the challenging part of this course even though total yardage is short. Greens have gotten better over the last few years but tend to run slower than average. Sand traps have very little sand in them so you need to chip the ball out of them. This is a fun course to play after you have played it once or twice, especially since it is probably the most inexpensive course in the area. Avoid on windy days.
Greens continue to get better as to speed & roll. Sand traps are a disaster with only the illusion of sand in them. Still for the money, one of the best values around.
Clifton Highlands Golf Course
Played On 05/15/2016Challenging course
This course is very challenging because of the greens. Lots of slope and very fast. Stay below the hole is a must. How this course only gets a 124 slope rating is a mystery. It is more difficult than 135 slope rated courses that I have played. Fairways in good shape and overall course condition is excellent. Practice area and clubhouse are marginal. Must be able to control your approach irons as to distance and line & have good speed control with your putts if you want to have any chance to score here.
hole 14 (on backside of clubhouse) is a short but very quirky par 4. Green built into hillside at sharp right angle relative to fairway. Locals play this by trying to bounce approach shot onto green by hitting right rough to right of green and have gravity take over.
Hastings Golf Club & Events
Played On 05/07/2016Walkable, straightforward, challenging but not impossible
Course name changed to Dakota Pines & is open to public play. If you like to walk & play golf, this course is excellent. Old style course - tree lined, smaller greens that roll fast. Everything is pretty much in front of you, except for a few sharp dogleg holes. You are likely chipping back to fairway if you miss it off T. Approach shots need to be accurate and greens 5, 8 & 14 have a lot of slope to them front to back. Greens are quick so be sure to hit some putts on practice green before round. I like this course a lot - challenging but fair. Pricing ($45 walking) is high relative to nearby course options. Overall course conditions are good.
Played course again last weekend in July. Greens and some T boxes in poor shape. For what they charge, better value courses in the area.
Hibiscus Golf Club
Played On 03/24/2016Way overpriced for condition
Very disappointed with this course. I've played better condition courses for $35 than this course was for $75. Grass was spotty, weeds or nothing at all many places. Greens recently filled with sand. Poor overall course maintenance. No memorable holes in terms of interesting or design. Play this course only if you can pay $35 or less.
Bonita National Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/22/2016Good course but expensive
B.N. is a newer course centered around a massive new residential community being built. Like all FL residential/golf communities the course is designed for maximum home lots on the golf course. The course is flat but not walkable due to distance between some greens and the next tee. Fairways are reasonably wide but water and out of bounds awaits on both sides if you miss them. Greens run true and are nice for a newer course. Overall course condition is very good. There aren't any really memorable holes. Played in March - and this course is expensive. There are some better value courses in the area.
Thank you for coming out to play and providing a 4 star review! We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you back again very soon so we can provide the best value!
StoneRidge Golf Club
Played On 11/04/2015Challenging but fun
Links style course, almost no trees to contend with. Wide fairways that have strategically placed bunkers & waist high prairie grass in summer if you miss fairway (not so bad in spring or late fall). Greens big, undulating in levels & quick (good luck if you are on a level above the hole). Also greens guarded with plenty of deep and large bunkers. Key to playing this course is picking the right tee box for you to play from. If you have to hit approach shots with hybrids or long irons, you will struggle here. Very fair layout & fun to play. I only play it in the late fall when rates are affordable - pricey otherwise.
Old Works
Played On 09/30/2015Fair & fun course
This is the best Nicklaus course I've played out of 6. Generous fairways but trouble if you miss them. Greens have lots of slope yet they are not impossible. A mix of a few hard holes (10 & 11), some intermediate difficulty and a few easy holes. Lots of black slag bunkering but room to miss them. This is a must play course if you are anywhere in the area. The price is fair too .
Palouse Ridge Golf Club at Washington State University
Played On 09/29/2015Not fun
This course is very difficult. Greens like putting on undulating sloped asphalt with back and front edges that are shaved where your ball rolls to the abyss. Fairways steeply sloped to make them narrower than they appear. Good shots usually not rewarded.
How much tax payer money/student fees fund this course?
We played Palouse Ridge last June and paid $52.00 (including cart) on a golf promo.
In July we assumed we could get the same rate however we did not have a promo. (our mistake) We were informed the non resident rate would be $100.00 and the young man in the pro shop would not extend a promo or resident rate of $57.00. We politely passed and headed to Idaho.
Our opinion is this rate is excessive for a course in the middle of nowhere that appears to get little play.
Very marginal layout overall-with the first two holes blind shots off the tee as well as two up hill par 3's that are hit and hope holes. The overall course was in good condition.
The club house and restaurant were new and very nice however zero patrons and only ten vehicles in the parking lot.
We played the University of Idaho Course 8 miles away and paid the full price of $41.00 including cart for 18 holes. 60 miles north is Circling Raven GC-Great layout, scenic, first class and well worth the $100.00 rate.
My review is Palouse Ridge is a $50.00 course yet trying to charge out of town golfers $100.00 - Locals should be thankful it is owned by the university or it probably would go broke.
Should add got on right after a college tournament had ended. All pin locations were tucked and overall course setup was difficult. Hopefully this is not how they set the course up for everyday play?
University of Idaho Golf Course
Played On 09/28/2015Good value
Hilly course in the Palouse. Liked the layout with good views. Course could use some TLC in places but the greens were in good condition. Fair course & not super difficult but their are some OB & lost ball opportunites especially if you spray the ball. I walked all 18 but was tired at the end - would get a cart next time. Clubhouse, food & bev, practice facilities are below average.
Pinecrest Golf Course
Played On 09/24/2015Well kept traditional style
This is one of the best conditioned muni's I've ever played. Fairways & greens in great condition. Excellent course to walk. Tree lined course with generous fairway width, Ave to smaller sized greens that all were sloped from back to front and we're reasonably fast. There are no real signature or very intetesting holes were only negative. Carry fluids with you as otherwise at the turn is it. Paid $25 to walk - fantastic value at that price.
Southern Hills Golf Course
Played On 09/20/2015Great views
Course is very hilly, almost every hole the green is either well above or below you. Coupled with ball flies further at elevation, couldn't get my distance right. Fairways wide here, greens were hard (it's been very dry) with slope and speed. Played better once I started using 1 less club than I would normally. Need cart for back 9. Can walk front. Fantastic views. Would play again.
River Falls Golf Club
Played On 09/12/2015Old style golf course
Traditional course. Tree lined w/small greens. Wide fairways w/most holes dogleg left or right. A lot of blind shots, recommend taking cart & driving ahead to see where you should be aiming if you are not familiar w/course. You can easily play 3 wood or hybrid off most tees. Greens in good condition & run at moderate speed w/some having quite a bit of humps in them. Parts of course don't seem to drain well - felt like you were hitting in a bog. Want to go back as will score better playing it a 2nd time.
Hawk's Landing Golf Club
Played On 01/06/2015well maintained, moderately difficult
Course was well kept from fairways to greens. Need to play a few times as a number of holes require you to land ball in certain area to have decent access to green. Course is tight in spots with water in play. Back 9 harder than front. Course best suited to no worse than a bogey golfer. Pace of play was slow in early Jan. Good value if you can play for $65 or less.
I played G.H. again in mid September. Looks like they got their mowing under control. Rough length was similar to other area courses. When I played it in August, your only option was to try and hack it out to the fairway, assuming you could find it.
