An interesting course layout with significant elevation changes, especially in the front 9. The course rewards accuracy with relatively small greens to target, with many doglegs where it pays to first go see where the pin is located. Definitely worth while to take the cart, since not only is it hilly, but distances between holes can be as much as 1/2 mile.

Straightforward course with good condition tee boxes and greens. A little rough around the edges but a very good round of golf.

Boca Royale offers a high end "country club" experience to the public. This older course is in excellent condition, with challenging water hazards and well placed bunkers surrounding small greens, rewarding accuracy.

Black Birch, formerly Banner, is set in bucolic Moodus, with decent elevation changes, yet still easily walkable. The first few holes are wide, allowing you to tune your driver and recover an errant stroke. Then the blind dogleg # 5 challenges you as does the uphill #8, across from the pond with the warning "Kraken" (snake). The back nine tightens up, rewarding accurate and long drives. While the fairways unfortunately have late summer crabgrass, the greens are in excellent condition with the bunkers raked, filled with characteristically hard packed sand. The course has improved over the years and its layout is still appealing. The 19th hole bar is closed this season, but on weekends, a refreshments cart circulates the course to keep you hydrated. Dave, club manager, is always a gracious and friendly host.

This is a very interesting course due to the terrain, since it was built around an old quarry. Hence it rewards accuracy. You earn your pars here. You hit up, you hit down, your cart gets a workout; don't even try to walk it. The course is in good condition and very scenic. although golfers could more frequently repair their divots and ball marks on the greens. The clubhouse looked good and the staff were courteous. For something different, I highly recommend this course.

This public course is in good condition with decent fairways and greens. The carts are old and the cart paths need gravel, but the course itself is well maintained. There is a small driving range. The pub/grille is small and out of date, but certainly adequate for the 19th hole. The facilities could use some investment to get to the next level, I enjoyed my round and will return.

The fairways and greens were in excellent condition. The course is historic and reasonably challenging, with tough hole placements. Sand traps were gravelly as is often the case in New England. The course has a an excellent cafe serving food and beverages with a pretty patio overlooking the course. I will certainly return with my friends.

Slow play at a late afternoon tee time. We actually skipped ahead after 3 holes to the back nine which were empty. Managed to get 12 holes in before light and rain ended my first time on this enjoyable, scenic, well-tended course

Easy check in with friendly staff, offered nice course book. Our twosome was paired and we all enjoyed a great, well-paced round on this challenging up and down course with well maintained tee boxes, bunkers, fairways and greens. The greens were fast, with lots of break and variable depth and width. Holes 1 and 5 restricted carts to the paths, but that was no problem. This is a fantastic public course, definitely in top ten percentile. A great bargain on Golf Now. We'll be back! We did not visit the lounge.

Friendly and helpful staff. Well landscaped. Fairways in excellent shape for a public course. Greens were fast and in good condition. The back nine is more challenging and diverse, including a fun par 3 to an island and a dogleg on the 11th. We didn't eat there, but I am sure it was great. We will certainly come back to this course.
