Eagle Mountain Golf Club
Played On 11/26/2019Awesome layout with a few small caveats
Definitely one of the best layouts in the whole Phoenix/Scottsdale area, great views on every hole, all are quite fun to play, fairways are wide and forgiving, and the staff is very welcoming.
Conditions on the course were good in general; the greens were still somewhat sandy from overseeding, making the putting experience just ok. Carts were only allowed in the rough, and cart-path only on several holes, which makes for a lot of walking.
The green fees however have increased over the years; it used to be quite a bang for your buck, but now it's in the range of the more expensive courses, so more in the occasional splurge category.
That being said, if you haven't played it yet, do yourself a favor and go!
South at Boulders Golf Club & Resort
Played On 11/23/2018Best course in the area
The Boulders South course is simply a joy to play. Breathtaking views, elevated tees, superb conditions, plenty of tee box options, wide fairways (on most holes), fast but fair greens, in-cart GPS, you'll enjoy every hole and wish that game didn't have to end.
Some extremely minor gripes: the tighter, harder holes are at the beginning, so make sure you warm up before you start, and pace of play can be a little slow. Don't let that stop you though, the Boulders is an absolute must-play.
Note: if you're going to take pictures, take them early, as most of the best-looking holes are on the front 9. Not that the back 9 is bad, but it's not quite as impressive as the front.
Las Sendas Golf Club
Played On 11/22/2018Nice quiet and fun course
Las Sendas is a nice course to play. The layout is interesting and diverse, and the decor is wonderful. Course conditions were great, and the sand traps which I unfortunately visited a few times had nice, soft sand. Greens were receptive and had a nice fast and true rolling speed.
A few downsides: no beverage/food cart on the course, distance to green not always well identified, and a few houses on the sides are close enough to come into play.
Golf Club of Estrella
Played On 11/21/2018Great course in the mountains
Estrella is a very nice course, taking full advantage of its desertic mountain setting.
Conditions were superb, beverage cart came around often, distances are well identified, and the beginning and end of the course have superb views.
The middle is a little bit more flat, and has some noisy power lines running across several holes, bringing the experience down a little. I think holes 10 and 11 in particular could be moved or rearranged to be more out of the way and therefore more natural.
But other than that, it's a fun course and a great value for your money, with great receptive and fast greens, and a few tougher holes that will require some skill.
Quintero Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2018Great course with scenic holes all around
Our second time playing this course, one of the best in the Phoenix area. Elevated tees, beautiful scenery, original hole designs, lots of tee options for all players, in-cart GPS and club/ball-washers. You can't go wrong with Quintero.
Beware, a few holes are harder than they look, and the greens are lightning-fast. Also, 18 faces against the setting sun, a tiny downside for a later tee time. These small quirks aside, this is a fantastic course, and if you get a chance to play it, your answer should always be YES.
Verrado Golf Club - Founders Course
Played On 11/19/2018Fun course at a fair price
A great course to play on the West side of Phoenix, with good conditions, a nice layout with some pretty holes, especially on the back 9, and good service all around.
Due to recent overseeding, course was cart-path only and greens were a bit slow, but otherwise the conditions were great.
Enjoy!
Eagle Mountain Golf Club
Played On 11/24/2015Scenic golf at its best!
Played the Eagle Mountain as the last round of this vacation and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great views on almost all of the holes, elevation changes and varied layouts all around, this course is simply fantastic. A few of the holes are rather tricky, but overall the fairways are wide and keep the ball in; in other words, the fun kind of challenge.
The course conditions were top notch and the greens were fast but fair and receptive of approach shots.
Just 2 really small things that might be worth improving:
-One hole (can't remember the number) is a dogleg to the left with houses on top of the hill on the left. Seems like this design could be adjusted, nobody likes a risk of hitting a house.
-Although the distances are well marked all around, an In-cart GPS might be a good investment since all the other Fountain Hills courses seem to have them.
But overall, a great, fun, beautiful course to play, my personal favorite of the week, and I will definitely be back on my next trip to PHX.
The Legacy Golf Club
Played On 11/23/2015Fun day of golf
The Legacy is good place to play, the conditions are nice and the layouts are varied enough to keep play interesting. Wide, forgiving fairways makes for a fun round, too.
Not many elevation changes, but the course does make good use of its surroundings, and the pace of play was quite fast, even with back-to-back foursomes.
I dislike the electrical lines visible on several of the middle holes, and the maintenance staff from the resort and homes in the area were a bit noisy, but there isn't much that can be done about that.
A few of the sand traps had really hard, bunker-style sand/rocks, which I'm not a fan of either.
Still, it's a good choice for a round of golf, so I say go for it!
The Phoenician Golf Club
Played On 11/22/2015Great golf at convenient location
Situated right in Scottsdale on the Camelback mountain flank, the Phoenician has three 9s to play. The conditions were superb and the pace of play was fast, even on a Sunday.
I played the Desert and Canyon courses, both had great views on several holes and were fun to play. There were 2 or 3 greens that were a bit damaged, and a few other areas (mostly rough) that were being repaired, but otherwise everything was top notch.
There was a bit of traffic noise on the last 2 Canyon holes; not a lot of water in general, but the last 3 Canyon holes all feature a lot of it, so watch out!
Would definitely play again and try the Oasis course.
GPS in cart is very helpful for distance, but ads on every hole? That has seriously got to go.
SunRidge Canyon Golf Club
Played On 11/21/2015Great views and course
With dramatic elevation changes and fantastic views on most holes, this is one course you definitely want to play.
The conditions were great all around, the staff was friendly and the beverage cart came around often. The in-cart GPS was also quite helpful for approach shots. The front 9 has the best views I've seen all week, looks like what you'd see in a golf magazine. The back 9 is generally more uphill, with the last 6 holes (dubbed the Wicked Six) being quite challenging.
The middle holes (9 to 11) are close to a college football field, and was a bit noisy, so if that bothers you, check in advance to see if there is a game; otherwise, the course was very peaceful.
One more thing: holes 16 and 18 face dead west and into the setting sun, so if you can, an earlier tee time might be better because of that.
Peaks at Tonto Verde Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2015Good golf at a good price
Tonto Verde is a pretty good deal if you don't mind the drive up there (or are located in Rio Verde). There are two 18-hole courses. We had previously played the Ranch course in 2013 and went out to play the Peaks course this time.
The layouts are similar and feature a lot of the same qualities on both courses; the grass is in great shape all around and the in-cart GPS is very helpful on approach shots. The beverage cart came around often to provide drinks when needed.
Only downsides: not a lot of variation between holes and no elevation changes so after 18 you've definitely seen it all. Also, the front 9 was a bit noisy with construction going around in the area.
Rancho Manana Golf Club
Played On 11/19/2015Ranch meets desert: a winning combination
A long drive from the city but absolutely worth it. The course features great views on many holes, wide fairways, soft sand traps, and distances are clear all around. No road noise out there makes for a relaxing and pleasant round of golf, and the staff makes you feel at home.
The tips are a little short, so expert players might find this course easy. Otherwise, the 3 sets of tees offered are varied and good for all other levels.
Definitely recommend this course.
Note: Range balls not included.
Lookout Mountain Golf Club
Played On 11/18/2015Nice views and fun play
A fun course with two different nines. The front is a good way to start with wide, forgiving fairways. The back uses the mountain flank for great views of the city and desert-style play, a little more challenging but fair and fun.
The grass was in good shape, beverage cart came around often, staff was nice (big improvement over 2013), and the sand traps were soft.
Only two negatives to note here: the dye used for the fairway left a few black marks on our shoes and clubs; nothing that can't be washed away but there might be better products out there.
And the lack of distance markers (or in-cart GPS); some holes were poorly marked (or not at all) and guessing an approach shot is not fun.
Pebble Creek Golf Club
Played On 04/28/2014Forgettable
An alright course at a good price. No driving range (only nets). Staff was friendly and the beverage/snacks girl came around often.
The layout was mostly good, but there were a few issues with the gps; some hazards weren't shown at all, and sometimes the gps and on-course signs gave conflicting information. Like being right next to the 150 post on a hole where the pin is centered, and the gps would say 180 to hole. Probably just a few data points that need correction, otherwise the gps was quite useful.
The white tee boxes were badly damaged on some holes and there were leaves everywhere, this couse could definitely use better maintenance. Greens were slow at the beginning of the round but got faster under the blazing heat of the afternoon.
A fun and inexpensive golf game, but there are certainly better options in the area.
Harmony Golf Preserve
Played On 04/27/2014Peaceful and Relaxing
A bit of a drive from Orlando but worth it. The layout as fun and varied, not many elevation changes but lots of different holes to keep play interesting.
The fairways were spotty on several holes but not enough to be of concern. One word comes to mind compared to most Orlando-area courses: peaceful. Being so remote, this course is really implanted into its surroundings and lets you appreaciate the nature around it. We even saw a baby gator running in the rough.
Well worth the green fee.
Oaks Course at Stonegate Golf Club
Played On 04/26/2014Not the fun kind of challenge
The course is situated in a semi-private community, the facilities are nice, there is a driving range in a lake, which works just fine, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.
Unfortunately, the fun stops there; this course is narrow, punishing and poorly indicated. We were playing with a couple that had recently moved there and even with their help we weren't always sure exactly where to hit, or whether our ball was safe. Lots of blindshot doglegs, with sand traps, lakes/ponds and OB everywhere, on nearly every hole. A gps and/or distance guides are severely needed yet unavailable. I don't mind a little challenge, but not when it's mostly guesswork as is the case here.
I have no idea on the "quality" of food and drinks, but the big issue is availability; there is no on-course beverage/snack cart and no 9 and a half. So bring your own snacks and drinks, I guess.
With so many good course options in the area, this one is just not worth it.
Falcon's Fire Golf Club
Played On 04/25/2014Best value in Orlando!
We heard great things about Falcon's Fire and we were not disappointed. We got a great rate through GolfNow; we arrived somewhat early, but the guy at the pro shop matched us with another pair a bit earlier than planned and even threw in a bucket of balls for the range.
What this course lacks is spectacular scenery, but it really has everything else. The grass on the fairways, light rough and greens was the best we played all week. The staff was ultra-friendly; we saw the marshall a couple of times even though the pace was already perfect, and the beverage cart came around a few times as well.
It was a fun game to play, and the on-cart gps made those iron shots a breeze. Did I mention the pace? This course was packed and we played as a foursome with another group behind us and another in front of us, yet we got to play in well under 4 hours; looks like the staff here could teach a lesson to several other clubs in how to manage play!
So what's missing? A few more elevation changes and/or original/memorable holes, which I think can be done within the current layout and would help the course stand out even more. But for the price, you can't beat this in Orlando.
The Club at Eaglebrooke
Played On 04/24/2014Beautiful course in Central Florida
We were in Tampa and Orlando for a week's vacation and we played this course on our way from one to the other since it's right in between. What a great idea, this was our favorite course of the week!
The practice range was great and included with the round. Lots of beautiful holes, the 2 of us got to play this very fast; beverage cart came around twice during our round. Water comes directly into play on a lot of holes, but it was such a pleasant round I don't think we lost many balls. When it's a beautiful day on a nice course like this, with no one pushing you from behind and no one holding you up front, your A-game is easier to come by.
Would definitely recommend this course!
Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 04/23/2014Not a bad course, pace killed it
Given the stellar reviews of World Woods, we wanted to play both courses so we played the Pine Barrens in the afternoon following our morning round on Rolling Oaks.
Despite the late start around 2:30, the pace was still excruciatingly slow, and nothing was done about it. The course has a good layout but nothing spectacular. All traps are hard bunkers which add to the challenge but get old before the round is over. Some tee boxes and greens were a bit more damanged as well.
Not a bad course to play, but definitely overrated.
Rolling Oaks at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 04/23/2014Nice but slow
Played this based on the many stellar reviews. The course was in good shape and fun to play. Unfortunately, the pace was pretty slow throughout the game.
A few nice holes, but a lot of them are quite similar. Still a good value for the money through GolfNow deals, and worth playing if you're in the area.
We played both WW courses on the same day and both of us preferred the Rolling Oaks which plays a bit longer with less obstacles; this one has real sand traps which were fun to play.
The front nine is where you definitely have to do your scoring. The views start to get beautiful after the 7th hole but it does become more challenging. Thank you for the feedback and we hope to see you again real soon.
