Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort - Legend Course
Played On 08/08/2015Beautiful
This course is what the MInnesota golf experience is all about. If you're from out of state, make you're way up north and check it out. The staff was kind but seemed very quiet on the day we were there. Not the outgoing friendliness that you see at some other spendy resorts. Great range, carts, grounds. The course is absolutely beautiful. Bring your camera....smartphone pics aren't good enough! Drink cart girls were really nice also! Great layout through the woods, lots of elevation changes and rock outcroppings. A real gem. On the 13th hole, let er rip and go for the green for a chance at eagle! Large greens all around makes you feel like you have a chance for a low score.....a chance. The only negative about our round was a few spots on the back 9 felt like the fairway was thinned out and you were hitting of soft mud. It really defeated the purpose of putting it in the fairway! Other than that, we all loved it!
Oh and do yourself a favor, after your round, have some drinks on the back patio and relax taking in the beauty of the lake! It was a perfect ending to a fun round.
The Wilderness At Fortune Bay
Played On 08/07/2015Wow
Shhhhhhhh. Don't tell Golf Digest, but this course, not The Quarry, is the best course in Minnesota! We played them both on a guys golf outing and I came away more impressed with The Wilderness. Every part. We stayed at the casino which is an 8-iron away from the clubhouse. We drove up to the clubhouse and were greeted warmly by the staff waiting with a cart. They removed our clubs from the vehicle and gave us a towel and sent us on our way. Blown away by the staff.....keep up the good work! The top notch customer service didn't stop there. From the guy firing up the grill outside, the clubhouse staff, the bartenders, the rangers.....everyone was courteous and friendly...cracking jokes and giving tips. I couldn't have asked for more. This is what every golf resort/course should strive to be.
The course conditions were immaculate. I don't remember any spots where we weren't impressed. There is a green that has a valley running through it. The pin placement was in the bottom of that valley. Seemed a bit Mickey Mouse to do that, but we laughed it off! Very scenic and all around fun. If you have the choice of northern Minnesota courses.....choose The Wilderness.
The Meadows Public Golf Course
Played On 07/21/2015Wind....Red River Valley nemesis
If you're a local, you are used to this beast on any level. Links style courses and 20+ mph wind. That's what you get around here. The Meadows is probably the nicest place in the area to play your links though. Fun, open course. They take care of it very well so you wont have poor conditions. There are at least 3 two-tier greens that require some finesse. Water is used all over this course and you'll find yourself flirting with it numerous times. Some blind creeks that you don't see until you come up on them. I recommend it.....just realize that you're playing against the course and the wind!
Village Green Public Golf Course
Played On 07/09/2015Standard
You can name it whatever you want. This is the standard course for the FM area. It's kept up very well and I've always had fun playing it. No shade on the front 9 and meandering through a neighborhood on the back 9. You'll like the course for sure, but nothing is going to blow you away.

Grabbed a cart and headed to the range to work out the booze we had the night before. Guys weekend brought us to this little gem in Wisconsin. The driving range is hilariously beautiful. You cant judge how far you're hitting anything or see your ball land. It's on the top of a dramatic overlook and you just bomb balls into the wild blue yonder. I loved it! We come from NW Minnesota where all you get 95% of the time are flat, links-style courses. We come in search of courses with some character and elevation change. This was perfect!! The starter was a very friendly man who gave us some tips on how to play the first hole depending on how far we drove the ball since you can't see the fairway on that first hole! There are many blind shots on this course. We found ourselves driving ahead multiple times to find out where we wanted to aim. I'm sure this is a common practice at this course. We weren't holding anybody up though....I think they do a good job with their pace of play. This was such a fun course for us flatlanders and I would definitely play it again and recommend it to anyone. The only beef I had with the place was the lack of gps carts. Seems like a necessity. We rented a terrible gps unit and not only was it impossible to see with the sun glare, it was slow and cumbersome. We just gave up on it after a few holes. DO NOT walk this course. It will be a nightmare from which you will never wake up. Overall.......simply gorgeous. Can't wait to go back!
The Refuge Golf Club
Played On 06/13/2015Ridiculous pace
Should've walked away after we had to wait 35 minutes past our tee time to start our round. It was a guys weekend and we drove down from Northern MN to play a few courses. Every hole we played, we had to wait for at least 4 groups ahead of us. This was the most unprofessional course I've dealt with. We were on an itinerary and this ruined our whole day. It took nearly 7 hours to complete the round. Seems like they overbooked on purpose just to get more money, disregarding the experience of their customers. Didn't see one ranger. The beer cart girls were the only ones that were apologetic about the whole situation. They were very sweet. The course itself was in great condition and is a really scenic treat. I don't think the course conditions could've saved the horrible experience we had though. I'd think about going again if they changed their booking policy. Don't make dinner reservations.....you'll miss them if you play here! We did!
Overall it's a great course though. Play at your own risk.
Hi justind0000,
Thank you for playing at the Refuge Golf Club. We are disappointed to hear that your experience with us was not up to par. We appreciate your feedback about the course conditions. We hope you will give us another chance and come back and see us again.
