Bulle Rock Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2019EXTREMELY overrated
I can sum up our experience by what my friend said as we stood on the par 5 15th tee: "Wow, this looks like a muni" . There are so many bad spots in the fairways. The tees aren't in good shape. The driving range was a sandy mess. The greens are still recovering from being punched a couple weeks ago, but I still don't see them being pristine any time soon. Even the signature Pete Dye "railroad ties" are overgrown and unkept.
I expected MUCH more from what many say is the best public course in Maryland. It seems to me like they are living off of past glory and euphoric recall. . There are AT LEAST 10 courses (5 in the Frederick area) in Maryland in WAY better shape than this one.

I used to LOVE playing here, but it's been several years since I've played here and the course has been in pristine condition. I was really hoping that 2019 would be different. It doesn't look like this will be the case. The ONLY good condition here are the fairways. The tees are not good. The bunkers are not good. The greens are HORRIBLE. I was told that the greens were punched 7 weeks ago. They are rolling like they were punched 3 days ago. I was also told, by the VERY nice starter, that it has to do as much with mother nature than anything. How can this be true when the other courses in this area are in MUCH better shape in late April? I got a good deal on Golf Now. I can not FATHOM paying full price to play this place in it's current condition. It is sad and embarrassing :(.

It's a good golf course....no doubt about it. However, I can think of 4 courses in the Frederick, MD area alone that I would rather play. To be fair, the golf course was so wet that we here losing golf balls IN THE FAIRWAY. Also there seems to be a lot of regulars (members perhaps?) that seem to only be interested in playing speed golf. We were a 3- some playing at about a 4 hour pace. We let one 2-some go through and had another on us with " hands on hips" constantly. Call me crazy, but on a beautiful day on a nice "high end" golf course, I really don't feel like playing hockey! Maybe I'll try this place again next year at a dryer time. Until then I'd be just fine playing Whiskey Creek, Maryland National, Worthington Manor or Musket Ridge. These are all better courses IMO...and they have better views!

Round was very slow (5+)....course in good shape except for greens still recovering. Staff was VERY friendly as always.
Clustered Spires Golf Course
Played On 09/13/2017Meh
I've played here maybe 10 times over the past couple years and this was the worst shape I've seen the course when "in season". The rough was crazy high. The greens were VERY slow and bumpy. The fairways were decent.
The lowlight of this days experience was the staff being completely rigid about what I was told a city policy. The policy evidently is that Golf Now times can NEVER tee off earlier than their time.
This was a very slow day. I signed up as single as a 12:32 tee time. I was on the putting green (near the 1st tee) at 12 and saw that nothing was happening on the tee and hadn't been for quite some time. I decided to ask the shop if I could tee off early and was met with a very firm and defensive "Absolutely not".
It's just such a ridiculous policy, when it would obviously make zero difference to anything. Last year I was met with the same rigidity and was forced to tee off with a foresome with 4 open holes in front of us. Right after us there were 3 groups of local "speed golfers" and the marshals were pressuring us the entire round, even though we played in 4 hours.
This kind of situation would be avoided if they just used a little common sense and didn't treat Golf Now customers like 2nd class citizens.

Played On 06/28/2017Crazy Pin Placements!
Course was in great shape....but come on guys? Are you trying to ensure 6 hour rounds and embarrass players? I only played 10-16 because I was beyond frustrated with the impossible pins and pace of play. Here is the breakdown of pin placements:
#10 : middle far left, on a slope so severe that 2 of us putted UP to the hole and the ball backed up 2 feet. Imagine how it would be from above the pin
#11: Top tier...all the way back...need I say more?
#12 : Top tier...far right...no chance to hit an approach shop close....and if you miss right...no chance to get it close
#13: middle far right....right in the middle of a slope....no chance to get an approach shot close ...and if you miss right..no chance to get it close
#14: front middle....right in the middle of a slope....I hit a birdie putt about 2 inches from above the hole....par putt was from 5 feet
#15: front left....on a slope so severe that if you are in the middle of the green, you would have to be a magician to get it to the hole and keep in on the green...I hit a 4 hybrid from the black tees in the middle of the green and had about 0 chance of making a par
#16: front left....crazy slope again...landed a wedge just past the pin....off the green it goes
I am a good player and enjoy a challenge. I play here because this is a challenging course. I am however NOT preparing for the US Open. This was just insane and the wind was not even blowing. If the wind had blew I doubt a ball would have even stayed put around some of these holes, if you placed it.

Played On 06/21/2017Fully Restored!
Whatever changed this course made in it's staffing a couple years back continue to pay off. I remember it being so bad a couple years ago that we were teeing off mats on the Par 3s!
Thankfully those days are in the past. The entire course is in GREAT shape...tees, fairways and greens.
I can't wait to get out there again.

It pains me to give this course less than 5 stars. It's long been my favorite course in MD. However, even though it's not atrocious, I've never seen this course in worse shape (in years past it's been pristine).
Even though the greens were long ago aerated (with small holes), 4-5 of the greens seem to have been aerated again (with large holes) and heavily sanded. Maybe they were close to losing them?
There were some bare spots in the fairways and lots in the rough around the greens. Also the ground just off the greens was rock hard so several SLIGHTY off line shots rocketed into less that favorable positions...lol.
There was also a couple of VERY questionable pin spots...on VERY severe slopes (#10 and # 12).
I know it's been a rough year weather wise but there are a couple of courses nearby that are in better shape right now and I've never been able to say that.
Here's hoping 2017 is a better year for this course!

The only way I ever place this course again is if I am paid to!
So you and I were playing on the same day. I just left a review too.i'm with you I'm done PG will never see me again unless I can play for free.
Clustered Spires Golf Course
Played On 06/22/2016First time and will be back!
Loved this course. Good, fair challenge from the tips...with some tough holes and some scoring "opportunities". Course was in great shape. I wouldn't put it in the same category as Whiskey Creek or Worthington Manor...but it's not far behind.
Renditions Golf Course
Played On 03/30/2016Over 5 hours and no marshall in site!
We teed off at 1pm on a Wednesday. Because of a frost delay earlier there was a partial shot gun that just finished. This meant that there was NO ONE in front of the group in front of us. We waited on every single shot all day long and the round took just over 5 hours. We never saw a marshall. . We made several phone calls to the course and never got past being on hold.
We also witnessed a member of the group in front of us, take a divot out of the 6th green right next to the hole and throw a club into the woods on the 8th.
This is the problem with Renditions. It's a fun course to play and usually in decent shape. But, because of it being "gimmicky" it attracts a lot of beginning golfers and a lot of what I would call "yahoos" (like the group in front of us). You wouldn't expect this at a higher end public golf course.
If you are looking for a good, stress free outing and to increase the likelihood of avoiding "yahoos" I suggest going out the Frederick area courses.
Not a fun day!
Renditions Golf Course
Played On 03/09/2016In good shape for this time of year
First round of the year and I hacked it up. That said, it was enjoyable. The course looked as good as can be expected for this early in the year.
Worthington Manor Golf Club
Played On 09/16/2015Great shape for year without much rain
This was only my second time playing here, but it won't be the last. It's crazy to me that this course is so close to PB Dye and PB looks like a goat pasture and Worthington is in great shape. This course will test all of your game. From the tips it forces you to curve the ball both ways on many holes if you want to end up in the fairway. Greens are running great...and challenging....fairways pure.....tees pure.....rough is down (thank God....cuz I was in it plenty!)
P.B. Dye Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2015Terrible shape
First time playing this course....and only because I got a good hot deal. The shape of the tees is embarrassing. They actually have mats on all the par 3s and on one par 4! The fairways are decent but very spotty and the greens are very bumpy.
It's a shame, because I really loved the layout...and this course could really be beautiful if it was maintained properly
Patuxent Greens Country Club
Played On 07/09/2014Terrible
This place is a goat track...avoid! The rough is 6 inches high. The greens are bumpy. The fairways were sparse and muddy. And the layout is mickey mouse. I wouldn't play here again for free.
Whiskey Creek Golf Club
Played On 7/31/2013Always a pleasure
Love this track. It's in great shape right now...greens..fairways....tees...and rough is up a bit. This course (especially the back 9) beats me up a bit...but I love it....fired a smooth 36-42 from the tips...lol. Staff is always friendly and not pompous..unlike some of the other "higher end" public courses around here.
Lake Presidential Golf Club
Played On 11/15/2012NOT a top of line golf course.
I was not too dissapointed with the course ONLY because I got a great deal here. But, I would NEVER pay summertime prices to play here. I agree with the review who put Whiskey Creek WAY above this course. I would also put Maryland National, Hampshire Greens, Northwest, Rasberry Falls, The Woodlands and Renditions WAY ahead of this course. Those courses all have better (less gimmicky) layouts and are all in better shape. The greens at Lake Presidential are nice, but thats it. The tees, the fairways, the rough and the bunkers all leave much to be desired. And for my tastes the layout is just not classy.
I agree with you 100%. I have had the same thing happen to me at this course, it's ridiculous. I play many other course using GolfNow, and if the tee box is open, they let me go. Clustered Spires is the only course that treats you badly.
