River Course at Alisal
Played On 03/25/2017More than meets the Eye...
In the interest of full disclosure I live in Solvang. So, easy to get to is big... Wrapped in the Santa Ynez Mtns. one only needs to look up to see the beauty. While most CA courses are probably in good shaped after the rains... it particularly helped the River Course. The front is not too exciting, several of the holes parallel each other so if it had been busy (it wasn't) it's easy to see other groups hitting into your fairway. If you hit a decent drive at around 220ish many of the fairways are bunkered left and right, so you just can't swing away, unless of course you don't mind coming in from the opposite fairway... the greens are a combo grass(?), sort of like a few days growth on your face, even after they're cut so while looking straight forward they can trip you up. The green traps are not difficult to get out of, holding the green 'stubble' is another story. As you work your way around the heart of wine country it's hard not to smile... especially if you got a good deal. The pro shop staff is quite friendly the bar & restaurant good. Worth the money... Enjoy!
Poppy Hills Golf Course
Played On 11/13/2012A magical day...
Had a great time on a beautiful day just before the rain. The Deep blue sky matched the Deep blue Pacific peeking through the Pines. If you didn't see the ocean you might mistake the course for Pinehurst. The grass was a little beaten down, don't expect a lie with the ball sitting up. My wife says "Too many downhill / sidehill lies", "it's called golf honey"... A lot of nice targets to hit to where you have to trust your swing... have fun! Oh yeah, be sure to book online, $200 bucks a round is steep.
