We got a great last minute deal online but it took longer to get to the course than we had planned. We called en route and told the starter we would be 5-10 minutes late, which proved to be accurate. Upon check-in we were given the option to pay $10 pp more to play as a twosome or wait for the second half of our scheduled foursome, who evidently were also running late. We chose to wait. Although there was no one on the first tee, we weren't allowed to go out until they showed up. They finally showed up and we teed off about 40 minutes after our scheduled tee time. No one seemed to tee off since our arrival so the course was wide open ahead of us. Our companions played slowly and two groups played around us (think they were playing the second 9 of an 18 hole round). The pace would probably have been OK if we had gone out as two two-somes. We found out during the round that our fellow competitors were given the same option we were given - pay $10 pp more to go out as a twosome. If they had opted for that then we would have waited a long time for no purpose and would probably have gone out as a two-some long after we arrived. This pro-shop revenue-maximizing strategy struck us very poorly.
The course itself was in terrible condition, since there seemed to be no irrigation system on the fairways and the local drought made them more dirt than dead grass. Several times the ball ended up in a rare clump of grass since that was the only thing which stopped the roll, which made play difficult. The fairway bunkers were more dirt than sand.
Although we had paid for 18 holes, all of our foursome called it quits after 9 holes.
