Good value, despite slow greens

Positives: Cheap rates. Friendly staff. Fairways and rough in good condition. Newer electric carts. Lots of variety in the layout even if holes 16 and 17 are pretty goofy. Nice rural tree-lined property.

Negatives: Probably the slowest greens I’ve ever played on in 20+ years of golf, though they were in great condition. Gold and red tee boxes were often mowed afterthoughts in the fairways, not level in many cases.

Pleasantly surprised

Played this course for the first time on a weekday morning. Wasn’t busy, just myself and some other singles and twosomes spread out. Course conditions were better than expected. Really nothing to complain about, the crew does a great job here. As a short, straight hitter I found the quirky layout to be very enjoyable. Not a course for walking due to elevation changes and distances between some holes. Paid $30 which is an excellent value for this course.

Meh

Played Red-Blue on a weekday morning with a friend. The other reviews complaining about the bunkers are 100% correct, they are the worst of any public course in Montgomery county. Most were either full of water or full of rocks and weeds. I know this course is probably getting turned into a housing development soon so I don’t expect anything will be done to fix the bunkers in the meantime. I hadn’t played this in many years but I remembered the property doesn’t seem to drain well after rain and usually plays wet, that hasn’t changed. Fairways and rough were in good condition, however, just very wet with muddy areas in the rough. Greens were average public course speed but had a lot of weird breaks near the hole. Layout is pretty easy and nothing really memorable other than maybe hole 9 on red.

The big positive was that we got out ahead of what appeared to be a very large league of old guys and we flew around in less than 3 hours on a weekday morning. With so many other golf options around Gilbertsville, not much reason to play this course.

Great as always

Course is in excellent condition for the summer, particularly the greens and bunkers. A few small random bare patches in the fairways but nothing worth complaining about, it’s 110 degrees out. Palmbrook is always a great value. Range balls included. Solo rider carts allowed due to COVID. Friendly and helpful staff. You could pay more money and not get a course in nice of condition as Palmbrook elsewhere in the NW valley.

Good value at this hidden gem

Played on a Saturday afternoon and pretty much had the place to myself other than a couple of twosomes. I finished in less than 3 hours with no waiting. This course used to be known as Verde Santa Fe.

One interesting thing about the layout is that there are no bunkers at all on the course. There are some hidden ditches/washes you have to be aware of on some shots, but there are signs on some of the tees, and a golf GPS will have the distances to them. Hole 18 has a pond to the right of the tee shot that is hidden from the white tee box.

I walked the course. The course has quite a bit of gradual elevation change, but the greens and tees are generally pretty close except maybe for the walk from 9 green to 10 tee.

Apparently new ownership took over last year and has been trying to improve conditions. This fall's overseeding job was excellent, they overseeded a pretty wide area around the greens as well. A very thorough job whereas some other courses cheap out on the green surrounds. The greens today were very smooth and quick. I was very impressed with them. You can tell this course was neglected in years past due to some scruffy areas around the perimeter of the course and in between holes, but they aren't really in play anyway. The course does run through a housing development, but the houses are set back far enough to not really be in play.

Overall I think this course is an excellent value if you can't or don't want to pay double to play one of the two public courses by Sedona.

Great conditions and value

I played here early on a Sunday morning.
This is not a particularly interesting or challenging course, but the holes have enough variety in yardages, with some undulating terrain, so that it is not the boring pancake-flat snoozefest of a course that it could otherwise have been.

It is sort of a hard course to lose a ball on. The fairways are pretty wide, and the houses are set far enough back to not be intrusive. There is a very shallow drainage canal running along some holes, but it is easy to grab an errant ball out of.

I hear a lot of locals complaining about the greens, which were re-grassed this year. I believe they were not overseeded this fall due to being new, and the surfaces are very firm and fast. Personally, I enjoy this sort of condition, and this was one of my favorite things about today's round at Willowcreek. They putt very smoothly but I imagine can be frustrating to someone with a poor short game or someone who puts a lot of topspin on approach shots.

Pace of play was about 4:20, which would have been sub-4 hours if it weren't for a fivesome a couple of groups ahead that caused some waiting. Why these Sun City courses allow fivesomes during prime time, I have no idea, I think they do it either in part to discourage non-regulars/non-residents from playing there, or because the retieree clientele is in no hurry to go anywhere...

It is an easy course to walk, and I was not the only walker out there. 40 bucks to walk this course in a December weekend is a great value especially given the great conditions. I will definitely be back, even though I'm not the target demographic. In my opinion this is currently the best of the original Sun City courses.

Good value

I played here on a hot weekday afternoon, and the course was basically empty, which was exactly what I wanted so I could get around quick. Guy in the pro shop was friendly and energetic. Paid around $20 which was an excellent value.

Greens were a bit on the slow side, but rolled smoothly and didn't have many ball marks or blemishes. Fairways were in pretty good condition, I don't complain about tees because you are teeing up the ball so who cares about the grass, but I thought these were fine. The course layout reminds me of a Florida course, has many mature trees, and enough variation in the holes to make it enjoyable. Hard to lose a ball on most holes. I think it's a much better layout than nearby Union Hills CC and Sun City CC.

l'll be back.

Great place to play

Played here on a Sunday around noon. Course was really dead, our foursome got around in less than 3:45 walking and never caught up with anyone. Paid $38 which is extremely reasonable for a weekend. Course is in great condition now that the fairways were irrigated, greens were in top notch condition. Interesting layout, up and down the hills, with several greens that slope down front to back. It's scenic and not surrounded by houses. Lots of trees that demand a straight shot on many holes. We did not use the restaurant but saw it was busy with non-golfing locals. Look at their website for various specials, passes, and coupons.

Enjoyed my round

I played Southmoore in an outing after having not played it for probably 12+ years. It was in excellent condition despite our recent lack of rain. Almost country club-like conditions, I was impressed.

I played in an outing so it's not really comparable but the scramble did get around in a little over 4 hours which is good. I'll also say the Southmoore staff gave our group a great pricing structure and the service was great.

The course has a snack shop and there is a full-service Italian restaurant with decent food on premises.

If you get invited, GO!

Holes 1-2 and 12-18 were designed by Donald Ross, the remainder by the Gordons. A few years ago they renovated all of the tees and bunkers, it really improved the course, which is usually in impeccable condition. The greens are the most challenging part of the course. 18 has a neat two-tiered green. 1 is probably the fastest on the course. Most putts on 15 seem straight. Other than the creek that goes across several holes, the only notable water hazard is the pond on 8. This hole seems to play longer than the yardage.

In talking with a member, they have a good reciprocal program where you can play 15+ other private clubs in PA & NJ.

Sands Casino has a corporate membership and if you are a big player you can get a round comped here.

We had a pretty good lunch in the clubhouse after our round. There is a snack shack after hole 9 and there was a roving beverage cart.

The dues are pricey but there is currently no initiation fee.

Location is easy to find. Turn onto Linden Avenue off Main Street at the Sunoco and it dead ends into the club.

It was a busy Friday morning since the weather was so nice but we got done in 3 hours 50 minutes with two guys walking two guys riding.

There is a third nine called the "Hill Nine" which was part of the original 18 holes. As the name suggests, it is a very hilly, difficult course, with small greens. Also a neat course but they don't maintain it anywhere near as well as the 18 hole course.

It's a dump

Played here on a $15 hot deal. It's not worth any more than that. Weeds and crabgrass everywhere, it is evident that they are not using any chemicals, pesticides, or water.. Dead patches on the greens. Grass growing in the bunkers which have little if any sand or dirt. Fairways are the same height as the rough. Tee box locations don't match the yardages on the scorecard at all. This is the worst conditioned course by far in western NJ or the Lehigh Valley.

The only great part is that the pace of play is excellent since nobody goes to this place. Walked it in 2 hours 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. I would only recommend this course if you are very short on time and need to get around quick, or you are of limited economic means and this is the only golf you can afford.

It is a shame because this layout has good bones and must have been pretty sweet back when it was a private club. The old Harkers greenskeeper now works at Silver Creek CC in Hellertown and has done a phenomenal job of improving conditions there. It's almost like Harkers has no greenskeeper now, just "guys that cut the grass/weeds."

Not a good experience

Golf Advisor would not let me select this date but I played on a weekend in August 2015. We had a 9:30ish tee time. When we got there, we were told that there would be a delay because a "large group of guys together" decided to have breakfast before teeing off instead of going off on time. Um, ok. Once we got to the first green we noticed that not only had the greens been aerated recently, they had not been cut in probably 3-4+ days either. Totally shaggy. Of course we weren't told about this ahead of time. Many of the bunkers were washed out and full of stones. Lots of crabgrass and weeds in random spots. First nine took 2 hours 50 minutes, back nine took 2 hours 30 minutes. No evidence of a ranger. As there are lots of blind holes, apparently I came close to hitting into the group ahead twice since it was backed up. They sent a guy out to yell at me and tell me if I did one more time I'd be kicked off. Shouldn't you have a bell or something if this is an issue? The layout is interesting, some really cool holes (like the drop-shot par 3) but for a 5+ hour round in these conditions it was not worth $59. We won't be back. Maybe it changed in 2016 but in August 2015 it was not good.
