Long but forgiving

I love the wide open fairways, which allows you to bomb off the tee without too much fear of losing balls. Bermuda rough wasn't too bad. The course is very spread out, and it has more hills than other courses in the area. Very pretty. There is NO water on the course. It's the philosophy of the developer of On Top of The World, the 55+ community on which Candler Hills was built, to avoid surface water and the problems it can create in Florida -- like mosquitoes, alligators and sinkholes. Sandy waste areas take the place of water, and there are plenty of bunkers. The course was in beautiful condition. The greens were soft and fast -- ball lands and stops, but putts will roll by the hole. Wind was blowing the day we played, which made the course more challenging than it might have been otherwise. We grabbed a sandwich at the turn, and ate at the restaurant one other time. Good food and service. I hope to return but I live far away :-(

A shot-makers golf course

This little nine-hole resort course is short, tight and has lots of water, woods and railroad tracks around the edges. Finding the pro shop is among the challenges because there really isn't a pro shop. There is a reception desk for the spa, indoor pool, tennis courts and golf course inside the main recreation building. In addition, the Crown Plaza Resort near downtown Asheville is tricky to find because it is nestled in a hilly wooded area behind the big Sam's Club in Asheville. Nothing said "golf check-in" as we drove into the resort, except for signs outside the recreation building that advertise the facility's golf academy. Park outside the main building and go in to get a key to the golf carts, which are out the back of the building. I parked in the back by the tennis courts. To get to the first tee, you drive up a steep hill by the outdoor pool. After pulling my first two drives into the woods on the tight dogleg left, I put the driver away and used hybrids for the rest of the round. Focus on target golf to landing areas. Although the course is short, playing from the blue tees can be challenging if you can't keep 180+yard shots straight. An active railroad track runs along the right side of the first five holes. Don't know the local rule for pinging a shot off the box cars. GolfNow price can't be beat for playing golf in the Asheville area.

Mountain challenge

High Vista is a challenging mountain course, with lots of woods and water. You will get side-hill lies, blind shots, forced carries and tough uphill shots that require two clubs or more extra to get the distance you need. On the other hand, you get some beautiful views from elevated tees. This is not a beginner's course. Those who can't carry distances or keep their shots straight will lose a lot of balls.

Quick play despite a lot of players

My wife and I played Monarch as part of a visit to Royal Highlands. The golf course is one of the major attractions of the 55+ community, which includes pools, community centers, tennis courts, etc., including a nice softball facility. The course is short. With four sets of tees (black-gold-white-green), the closest tees made the round very successful for my wife. We finished our round in just under four hours with a bunch of foursomes playing the "tips" in front of us. The driving range was a little rough; the practice putting green was good. There was no other practice facility that I could see. The staff was friendly and the restaurant served us a nice lunch. The pro shop was minimal. They were having computer issues when we arrived. The course conditions were good and the greens were good. Expect conditions you might find at an excellent municipal golf course. I liked the back nine better -- it was longer, had rolling terrain and looked better. There is some water, but the levels were very low when we played. You will see gators and wildlife. I think you can find better public rates than we paid, but we were on a schedule and just wanted to review the community.

Oldie but a goodie

The Grove Park Inn is iconic in the mountains of Western North Carolina. That said, the resort itself has seen better times. New owner Omni hotels is making improvements to the old locker rooms and around the clubhouse. The course is in good shape, although it's not necessarily the highest quality you will find at other high-end resorts around the country. That said, the Donald Ross design is challenging and fun to play. As much as I hate to say it, the sand traps are a pleasure -- some of the best in the mountains. I played on a March day when high winds and cold were forecast for later, and I think that scared off a lot of people. But the conditions were perfect for golf (60s and no wind) and I practically had the course to myself. Played 18 in 2.5 hours and loved it.

Short and tight

You won't need your driver much on this short municipal track, but the fairways are tight (opens up on the back 9) and you have to be accurate with your shot placement. All the greens were sanded heavily for end-of-season maintenance, and there was no posted warning. But we enjoyed our round because we like to play fast, and most courses in this part of the country seem to play very slowly. Lots of elevation changes, blind shots and doglegs. While visiting the area, we also played Maple Moor and Lake Isle Country Club in Westchester (NY) County.Maple Moor had the best course conditions by far and they were more accommodating to players when it comes to sanding the greens -- they announced at the beginning that two holes were being sanded for the day.

Nicely maintained, but slow play

When we arrived, we were told tee times were pushed back because a fight had erupted after the starter told a single to join a pair of players on the tee. I guess the players "exchanged" drivers and the cops were called. So, we went upstairs to the restaurant and had a good lunch on the nice porch overlooking the beautiful course. Fall colors were in full array. Highly recommend the restaurant. And when the starter had us join a pair on the tee, we introduced ourselves, shook hands and had a great day of conversation and golf. We love meeting new people at the golf course! And of all the courses we played while visiting the area, Maple Moor was our favorite. Best tee boxes, fairways and greens we saw. But as others have noted, the pace of play was very slow.

Best conditions in Vegas

During our week in Las Vegas, our threesome played Boulder City, Siena, Silverstone and Eagle Crest. By far, Eagle Crest had the best fairways and greens, although the greens were slow. It also had the best price through GolfNow. Even though Eagle Crest is an executive-style course (just a half-dozen par 4s mixed in with some nice par 3s) it is the one we would have re-played if we had time. Other courses had serious fairway problems. I would rate Boulder City next best. Siena charged us $20 for a handicapped rider (can't grip a club much less swing one) unlike any of the other courses, which happily accommodated her, and we were offended.

Nice afternoon

This course is a nice municipal track. Fairways and greens are average; pace of play is very good for the Las Vegas area. Nice water features in places. This is the place to play if you like to work on your game.

Excellent 9-hole course

I'm a 15-handicapper who shot 82 in playing 18 on this course for the first time, but the course isn't a push-over by any means. Shot 43 on the first nine and learned my lesson playing the track a second time. Lots of sand and water hazards. You have to be accurate, not long. Lots of groundskeepers working, and the course shows it. The course sits on the landing pattern of the Westchester airport, so you get some close views of some big planes. Fun course.

Intimidating first hole

Red course is a good track for mid-to-high handicappers except for the first and last holes, which have extreme elevation changes (downhill first, then uphill) that make for blind shots. Don't be intimidated by the first hole. It gets much easier from there -- except for the last hole.

Wide fairways

My wife and I enjoyed our first-time experience at Etowah Valley Country Club. The fairways are ample for us high-handicappers, but there are woods and water. The pace of play was reasonable. New golf carts were comfortable and speedy. Some wet spots in places, but the rain has been ample around here. Lots of critters all over the course. Went searching for a ball once and came out with five different ones.

Probably the best deal on the island

Golf on Hilton Head can be very expensive, but this is probably the best deal on the island through GolfNow. That said, it's obvious this track gets a lot of play. Fairways can be spotty, but the greens are good. Lots of water and woods, so you have to be careful with your shots. The starter was a feisty old coot, so play along with him. He's really harmless. Set your GPS to 100 Indigo Drive and not to the default course setting in your Garmin or Tom-Tom or Magellan -- it will send you the direct route to an un-staffed gated entrance that requires a pass. It is NOT staffed and does not have a phone, so you have to go 1.5 miles out of your way, around the course, to enter through a security booth. Almost missed the tee time, thus encountering the faux wrath of the old coot starter.

A great value

Old South is a great value just off Hilton Head in Bluffton, S.C. It has some memorable holes as it winds it way through the marshes of the South Carolina Lowcountry. In a couple of cases, you actually have to hit islands that are fairways and then follow that by hitting islands that are greens. We had a lot of fun and would play there again. Much cheaper than the expensive and often overrated Hilton Head island courses.

Mountain course

This is a mountain course with blind shots, side hill lies and many crests and valleys. Youhave to be a shot-maker and not a bomber, although there are a couple of holes an accurate bomber might drive the greens. New electric carts with GPS are a bonus, and the course was not crowded the Saturday we played. If you like to walk, play elsewhere. You would exhaust yourself climbing. Nice driving range.

New golf cars with GPS

It's early spring, so greens were being aerated and the course was not busy. Love the GPS in the new golf carts, which is something new that I hadn't seen here before -- I hadn't played the course since last summer. Clubhouse restaurant was still closed (due to open April 1) so had to buy a snack in the pro shop. Family-friendly place.
