Poor conditions, fast greens

I have been wanting to play this course for four years and finally got the chance. I was extremely disappointed with course conditions. As one of the highest rated courses in the area, I expected conditions on par with the other places I played during this trip (Greyhawk in Scottsdale; Conestoga in Mesquite). It wasn't even close. It appears the course was not over-seeded this year, which I understand, but in many places it was almost like hitting off mud/dirt in the middle of the fairway because the grass was so thin. I figured this would be more of a resort style set up with decent grass and rough, etc... In reality, the course runs off the fairways onto dirt roads, horse trails, service roads, etc.

The starter (a very friendly guy) sent me off the back so I wouldn't have to wait for some big groups on one. The problem was they were doing mowing and other maintenance on the back nine. Now, this happens a lot when you golf, so it didn't bother...except the mowers did not turn off their machines or stop working when I was over my ball or putting or on the tee. I have never had a guy with a chainsaw start cutting 20 yards away during my backswing. This happened on four or five different holes. Each time, I was in clear view. Unreal.

When I made the turn, the starter said "just head on through to one." I ran into a foursome of ladies that didn't want me (a single) to play through. After waiting a hole, they waved me up and told me they were the end of six foursomes and none of the other groups were going to let me play through. No course marshall to help out. All in all, a bad experience.

That said, I think the course layout is fun and if the course was in better condition, it'd be great. The greens were almost unfair they there so fast. IT was nearly impossible to hold them on anything other than a perfect approach.
But for the money and all the hype, I was disappointed.

Glad I had a pass

This was my first time playing Crane Field and I had several people recommend this course with words like "love." I had high hopes, but this course is in terrible condition. From the first tee to the 18th green, I was playing off soggy grass, dry yellow, crispy grass, dirt, or mud. I had tons of poor lies in the middle of fairways. The best lies I had all day were out of the rough, were it was at least green. The bunkers were, in my opinion, nearly unplayable. I would say they were gravel, not sand. Several had rocks the size of golf balls in them. I was worried about my clubs hitting out them. And many greens had large dead (almost rotted?) spots. Impossible to putt over.
I walked this course and was happy to see water on a couple of holes, however I was not happy that there were no benches on tee boxes. I had to wait on a couple tees and would have enjoyed sitting down.
The layout was interesting, especially the back nine. A couple of blind shots and forced carries make the back more fun than the front. I think in few years this course will be very nice (as the trees grow and the course matures).
Improve the course condition and I'll be back. The guy in the pro shop was very nice.

Fast Greens

Made the two-hour drive from SLC because I'd heard this course was really scenic, and it was absolutely worth the drive. The course is lay out runs through a canyon and you play up and back down on both nines. Huge elevation changes on most holes, and the fairways are lines with trees.

The most challenging thing about this course is greens. The front nine greens were fast and break away from the mountain. The back nine, however, were so quick and have so much slope that I'd say they were nearly impossible. You had better be below the hole on ten, 11, and 14 (a 95 yard par three straight uphill to a green you can't see).

Be sure to bring your camera to the fourth hole, as it's a gorgeous and difficult down-hill par 3 with a forced canyon carry all the way. The view from the 16 tee box is the best on course, with Palisades lake in distance.

Loved my day at Palisades, and definitely worth the drive.

A little disappointed

Visiting Scottsdale and had the opportunity to play for a great rate. Unfortunately, a terrible rain storm the previous evening left mud, debris, and standing water on the course. I was not told that the course was "cart path only" until after my credit card was run. In reality, other than four or so holes, the 90 degree rule would have been appropriate. There were tons of maintenance crews out on the course and they not only left their machines running as my playing partners and I and took our shots, in a couple of cases, they actually got off equipment and left it in the way of shots. I had heard great things about this golf resort and the friendliness of the staff and was really looking forward to the experience, but was disappointed with the customer service. I went into the pro shop after the round for a souvenir and was nearly ignored by the person working at the desk and wasn't even asked how I'd enjoyed my round.

That said, the course layout and challenge were great. The tips are a challenging length, but not ridiculous. The uniqueness of the holes and layout were great and the property is lovely.

Had a RIOT

This was my first experience at Troon North and I loved every minute of it. From the time I pulled up to the time the bag was back in my car, the staff was friendly, chatty, and completely awesome. Nice range and putting greens, and a great pro shop facility.

The 90 degree rule was in effect, but other than that minor inconvenience, every single thing about the course was great. The conditions were perfect and never had a bad lie. It's also a little more forgiving off the tee than I was led to believe. Lots of great views and photo ops.

Played with a great couple from the area and although that weren't having a stellar day, we had a blast. Highly recommend Troon North.

LInks-style gem

I have played this course more than 100 times in the past 13 years and it only gets better with age. It's a challenging links-style course that demands some long drives and some position shots off the tee. The fairways are lined with marshes and tall grass, though the rough is usually not too heavy. Greenside collection areas gather wayward approach shots on many holes. Wonderful views of the Wasatch Mountains on each hole.

The 18th is a true monster. Par five to an island green...very challenging and fun final hole.
