Drout effects at their worst

Thought I was getting a decent deal on a course that I've played many times, that I think is typically overpriced. Was excited because it's usually a great course in great condition, until I got there. Dead, dead, dead.

I was supposed to play the Mountain Course which was complete hard pan everywhere but the greens and tee boxes. I opted to pay an extra $20 for the Valley course that was only Slightly better. 2 holes had grass in the fairways, the others with a couple spots at best. Greens were very firm, but true.

Thankfully I hit the ball very straight that day or I'd have been really unhappy. The average golfer would be blowing through every fairway in one direction or another. I had multiple drives that rolled 340yds-383yds. A couple times I lost balls on absolutely perfect drives down the pipe. Very difficult conditions.

I don't recommend playing here unless you really want to challenge yourself, or we start getting some rain to fill their reservoir because they do not get water from the state.

Sad decline

It's always sad when you see a course go down.

I had been here several times over the years. I think I played the Sky course once but after I got into it, it didn't seem that familiar. Over a decade ago when I was much younger and the complex was newer and in great shape, I considered being one of the caddies that worked there. Those times are Long Gone.

I know they had serious financial troubles. Fees higher than they should have been, the economy being bad and the slow decline of golfers and people with the extra income for golf. I tried to play out there back in the early summer because I thought I'd found a great deal for the Shadow course. When I got there I saw the course was a baron wasteland of of dead grass and hardpan and they told me that was the last day it was open because they were consolidating all their resources for the Sky course. I laughed and almost took it as a slap in the face that they were trying to make me pay to play that course. I went somewhere else.

Fast forward to this holiday weekend, months later with high hopes the Sky course looked better than the last time I was here. It was. It was in better shape than it had looked but in no way optimum. There were places all over the course that were water logged and muddy. The fairway was was very hard and patchy like it was dormant yet infected. Though it did play pretty true and would give some help with roll to the shorter hitter.

If you haven't played this course and you're a novice player. This isn't the course for you. Very unforgiving. My buddy that played with me who doesn't get out that much probably lost 20+ balls. The greens are very undulating and were soggy in places. Not many bail out spots. Lots of up and down hill making club selection tricky and the uphill very tough for shorter hitters.

I would love for this course to bounce back but they Need to lower the prices to give better value and pack tee times. This course at the way it looks and plays should be about $50-55 max to make people feel they didn't get robbed. The score cards were Printed on Paper which was embarrassing. The range, though you hit off decent grass, was a sad dirt wasteland. The standing facilities otherwise have been and are still great aside from the tvs that are clearly the same tvs that were put in there when the place was built.

There's so much potential here. If they manage funds properly. Give people value by lowering the price. Have a decent event planner to utilize their facility to its full potential and update a few things, it could possibly get back to a sought after $80-90 course. But it's just not there.

Very Slow Course

Haven't played here in years but opted as it was a good meeting place with buddies coming from 3 different directions. Quickly became clear why I don't play here. Always plays extremely slow.

Greens are in good shape but soft and slow. Poor drainage in certain areas leaving soggy ground.

They let groups of 5 out sometimes and there are a lot of novices and all around slow players. Expect a 5-6+ hour round.

The range has been revamped though and is in very good shape.

Beautiful Course

Challenging course. Rough is very difficult. Lots of water. Not a lot of forgiveness. Very nice course in great shape. Greens were much slower then they claimed they'd be. Staff was friendly and helpful. Will play again.
