J. E. Good Park Golf Course
Played On 09/25/2020Always reliable
Conditions were a little dry, and areas outside of fairways get hard, but the ball definitely can run here and some big drives are possible. Traps need new sand or renovated, but are raked nicely for what they have. Shots around the green are a little difficult due to hard ground or areas that need some more grass, but overall this course is always fun, it was busy yet pace was excellent, and the layout varies. If Akron ever got the money to do a real renovation to turf, sand, and greens this place would be a gem.
Rawiga Golf Club
Played On 09/06/2020Extremely Underrated
The layout here has potential to be one of the best in the area, as it has enough variation, the greens are smooth but difficult as they roll off all sides, and the fairways are mostly perfect. Conditions have definitely improved during the last few year.s. My only suggestion is that number 1 used to be number 10 when it was private, and is a pretty difficult start on that hole followed by the long par 3, whereas the current number 10 is straight and number 11 is a short par 3. I'd flip them back, get customers scorecards starting well, and save some abuse on the current front 9 so tee boxes can recover. Besides that, the employees are all nice and really are about the customer, fitting everyone in seamlessly even when busy, accommodating different skill levels, and making decisions to keep all players happy.
J. E. Good Park Golf Course
Played On 07/18/2020Excellent Municipal Course, Mature Trees = Shade
I decided when it was over 100 degrees with the heat index to play here, due to the mature tree lined fairways, providing a space to park carts in shade. The course is starting to dry, allowing a tee shot in the fairway to run, but the conditions were still good except for bunkers which are more like raked dirt at this point. Overall, as a municipal course it was excellent, and the only improvement would have been if groups in front of us spraying balls and duffing it would move to a better set of tees. Course also has full assortment of Thirsty Dog beer!!!
Flying B Golf Course
Played On 05/02/2020Always a wait to tee off
I enjoy this golf course, it is a good layout and opens up a lot on the back 9. Playing yesterday was pretty wet, which is not usual compared to other visits here. The only problem, like every time I book here, is that there always is a backup on number 1, so after arriving on time, like usual, we teed off 30 minutes past our scheduled time. 9 minute intervals is a little crowded, especially for a tighter front 9, and especially in the age of social distancing.
Fox Den Golf Course
Played On 04/22/2020Always Solid
Not the hardest course, is a varying layout though with a lot of good holes. Is a reliable experience, and conditions were good for just opening and while still mostly cold in Ohio.
Kennsington Golf Club
Played On 03/31/2018Wish I lived closer than an hour away
I've left a few reviews here already, but once again this course is excellent. I played March 31, so while most courses were still closed up, Kennsington was open. The greens were incredibly slow, and still bumpy, but will let it slide because of the season. You cant go wrong here especially once the greens get up to speed. Only problems here are sometimes slow play due to the moderate difficulty. The course layout varies, and offers challenges, but it seems I keep getting behind groups here playing 2 extra sets of tees than they should. If you are hitting three duck hooks off every tee to get something in play, then hitting your next shot from the red tees, move up a set or two and quicken the pace...
Kennsington Golf Club
Played On 03/18/2018Excellent course
For March, the conditions here were about as good as you could expect, course was not wet even though most courses are soaked and still closed. Greens were slow, with plenty of aerating holes still present, but its March.
I really like the layout here, it varies and offers variety of tests. A few groups were in front of us were all playing the longer sets of tees, and consequently I saw a bit of struggling. Its early in year, so we played the silver (between white and blue), and played well, and got to use a lot of different irons and see different yardages instead of having to go with hybrids and longer clubs on every second shot. I wish this course was about 20 minutes closer, I would go there all the time.
Someday maybe I will visit the nice bar/restaurant while here, or the range. Finally, there is a hotel right in front of the clubhouse, so it would be a good place to stay and play some rounds.
The Habitat Golf Course
Played On 02/23/2018Great value and nice course, greens perfectly smooth
In staying in Vero Beach on vacation, I visited this course in February of 2017, then came back for 9 then 18 holes while in the area again this year. The greens here were almost perfect, incredible smooth, and nice speed. While bunkers could use some edging and sand, the course was still really fun, especially for someone from Ohio that is used to playing wetter courses with big mature tree lined fairways, and hitting off of different types of grass. I really enjoyed the course, layout, and especially not having houses and noise everywhere, and saw a lot of different wildlife. The staff inside was friendlier than any courses I have been to in Ohio. I will plan to come back if in the area again.
For playing 9-18 later in the afternoons, the prices are great, but play was a little slower for a single with a lot of couples out on the course. Playing as a 4 some was excellent and the 18 took 4 hours.
Raccoon Hill Golf Club
Played On 11/26/2017This course not scared of cooler weather, always friendly
I have left previous reviews for Raccoon, but need to add additional as well. This course always tries to accommodate and always has friendly service. This time of year, many courses are either closed already, have a shell of a staff and limited drinks/snacks, and many seem to not really want you there since they will have to work later. The employee working at Raccoon, however, definitely did not appear to mind a 3 PM tee time in cold weather on a Sunday afternoon when the course was almost empty, and besides that, the bar was still fully stocked, and sells some decent beers. The course was in the good condition for the time of the year, with the exception being hard sand traps, but at this time of year, overall it is nice to find a place that is open and where you can book online and not have to worry about showing up to a course with no one there.
Roses Run Country Club
Played On 10/22/2017A good overall value.
Roses Run always has good values, and I always enjoy playing here. If this course could fix the bumpiness and improve the quality of the grass on the greens (yesterday doesn't count because it was just aerated), it would be one of the better courses in the area.
The only issue I have is that I booked a 2:40 pm time. Golfnow showed most tee times available. We were on time, paid, and at the tee box at 2:38 only to find a 2 some and 4 some lined up after no one had teed off in almost 20 minutes.. Either these groups were walk-in, or they were late, but either way there should be a starter or someone else to send us out first instead of waiting on these guys to hit every shot. The worst part is that the 2 some held back play, with the 4 some waiting to hit every shot. I'm sure these 2 guys that were taking their time shooting 100's were likely also playing the blues, but when I see multiple open holes and you are holding up a 4 some constantly, someone on staff should be aware and say something.
Rosemont Country Club
Played On 09/09/2017Nice smooth round of golf
My favorite part of playing this course is the pace of play and lack of typical customers I encounter at most public courses (slow, jeans, sleeveless shirts, radios, etc.). I have played here a few times and have never seen a backup or people waiting on any hole.
Overall, the layout here is good. I can easily remember every hole on the entire course4 days later, so every hole is different and it does require an average player like myself to use all of the clubs in my bag. For average players, if you can make it past #2 without a big number, then there are opportunities to score well. The only issues I have had with the course are some road noise on #3 and #4 closer to the shopping plazas. Overall, conditions of fairways and greens are good, more similar to a nice public course maybe than a more expensive club, and the sand is nicer than any public course I have played in the area. I am considering inquiring about membership here as prices are good and pace of play is excellent.
Raccoon Hill Golf Club
Played On 09/07/2017Friendly staff, average course, good value
I have played here a lot over the last few years are prices are good and the staff is always nice here. There are just a few issues, first is pace of play and lack of rangers, but mostly it is that the clientele here is generally a boorish mix.
For the actual course, it is not long or overly difficult, but some of the holes could use a redesign (13,14,16 especially). Greens are generally quick and fairways are nice. However, bunkers lack sand, and tee boxes are not level.
Kennsington Golf Club
Played On 09/03/2017Was not expecting a resort like course in the Youngstown area. GOLFADVISOR course name only has 1 N also.
Overall, the course gives you a lot to think about on tee shots, with tee boxes that make you think about where to play ball or how much to take on, and with plenty of bunkers out there. However, the hardest shot was the second into the green. Conditions were good for the season, all of the water areas around many holes were empty now due to lack of rain. The greens however were wet, and had a lot of ball marks, and were somewhat bumpy, which was surprising based on the overall conditions. I will give them a pass, and after playing Sunday 9/24 already am scheduled to return. It is worth the 1 hour drive. The only problem I had was the GPS units did not show us anything, maybe it was a malfunction, but the only thing visible was our cart location on the entire course, I would have expected it to show distance to other carts, etc.
River/Maple at Fowler's Mill Golf Course
Played On 06/13/2017Great layout, bring insect repellent
Played as a foursome in 90 degree weather at 1 pm, so the course was not too busy. Prior visits here played the black tees, and this time we were playing green and cutting off yardage on each hole. As an average driver of the ball, I still prefer the black tees due to having some more choices on some holes, but I also did not have to use hybrid clubs almost the entire round. Be aware of the choices and distances with the split fairway holes, it seems the ball just seems to naturally want to work towards the hazard in the middle.
The only issue with the visit was the amount of deer flies or horse flies, which were all throughout the course. It was my fault for forgetting to bring insect repellent, but with the surrounding wetlands, lakes, rivers, and wooded areas, it would be a good item for the pro shop to have available to buy.
J. E. Good Park Golf Course
Played On 06/09/2017Excellent course and challenge
This course lacks water hazards and has minimal hazards overall, but provides many longer par 4's that are mostly slight doglegs. J.E. Goodpark features a lot of trees to defend itself, and they do a good job of punishing misses. Overall, greens have some speed and break, and the rough is tall enough to make club selection important. I enjoy this city operated course, and am always surprised that Akron does a nice job here (for example I lived in the city for 10 years and my street was never plowed).
Chenoweth Golf Course
Played On 06/01/2017Keep the ball in play and you can score well
I last played this course three years ago as a newer player and it was a rough enough day not to return for a few seasons. My impressions now are totally different. If a player has one club they can hit in bounds on the front 9, there are many holes in the 300 yard range that give plenty of opportunities for birdie of you can take advantage (I didn't). The layout is definitely interesting, and once you get through the more wooded and tighter front 9, the back opens up more giving the opportunity to take some chances. The course also had some severe breaking greens, especially the #1 handicap (think it is the par 5#5 hole. I like the course and will return. On hole 1 the sound of I-77 was annoying, but it is gone as soon as you get to number 2. One recommendation for every course, in this day and age, is to offer some higher end beers in cans for an nice casual round.
Raccoon Hill Golf Club
Played On 04/30/2017Raccoon service always friendly, course consistent
I enjoy getting out to Raccoon, and would go more often if people I played with were closer to the course. Conditions here are always pretty good, even after a large amount of rain on 4/29, on 4/30 the course was in good shape. This course is not overly long or difficult, and pace has always seemed quick here. As a bonus, staff here has always been friendlier than most courses I go to.
Ellsworth Meadows Golf Club
Played On 08/14/2016Course should inform customers if they are not letting carts out.
Overall this course is not overly difficult, but every hole is somewhat unique with varying challenges.
We played in a constant light rain, and while wet out I was still surprised to arrive and find signs saying no carts would be allowed out, especially since there are cart paths along most of the course. We played the front 9 only as we were not prepared to walk, and it was not too bad.
If a course is going to close or decide to change an existing reservation, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to call people that have reservations as we would have likely gone elsewhere. The few minutes of their time would have saved my brother a 45 minute drive to come up to this course.
Last, courses need to stop treating accuweather and weather channel like the bible. On this day, the light rain occurred for approximately 3 hours, then the weather was clear for the rest of the day.
Flying B Golf Course
Played On 10/12/2015Overall fantastic course
Many courses provide a challenge based on distance alone and offer little else, but flying b offers a course where holes are unique, and gives an average driver playing white tees a chance to make good shots and score well based on more than just distance. That doesn't mean the course is short either, especially with three longer par 3s and a par 5 on the back with one or the narrowest greens I have played, along with hole 10 that features a second shot to a tiny green from a dogleg left that needs to avoid water on the right side.
Overall conditions are great, I am giving the course a pass for aerating as its necessary this time of year. My only complaint is that the course is 50 minutes away.
The Fairways at Twin Lakes
Played On 11/16/2014Don't Overlook This Course
Course had challenging Par 4's, mostly around 400 yards with a lot of rolling hills. Bunkers are excellent, and there are plenty of them protecting the greens (which were still very tricky even in mid-November 36 degree weather). I never really thought much about going to this course because I usually like to play 18, but I definitely plan on returning as it matches up favorably with any of the competitors in the area.
Thank you for visiting us at Fox Den Golf Course. We appreciate your 4-star rating and review. We hope you join us for another round soon.
