Pinehills Golf Club - Nicklaus Course
Played On 08/07/2020Best Public in Massachusetts
I've played a lot of the "top" public courses in Massachusetts. This might be my favorite one. It's a close race between Granite Links and Pinehills. The course itself isn't that challenging, but it's still fun and requires a lot of different shots. The pace of play is pretty quick, the conditions were best in the state.
I'd put it up there with most private courses I've played in the state, and it's way ahead of most public courses. Good practice area as well. Definitely check this place out.
Robert T. Lynch Municipal - Brookline Golf Course
Played On 07/15/2020Play here a lot... probably won't as much anymore
I've played here probably 30-40 times in the last few years. The main reason is cause it's cheap ($26) if you play after 3 and it has a range and a putting green.
The recent problem here is the booking and amount of people they let out. It's always been a problem but now it's a really big problem and makes me not want to go there.
They overbook this place like it's no ones business. We were playing on wednesday at 3PM. That's not exactly a "10AM on a saturday" tee time. However, we had to wait on every single hole. Not an exaggeration. There were several holes where we would be on the tee box, and we would see a group on the fairway and also a group on the green.... on par 4's. Not par 5's. ON PAR 4's. That should rarely, if ever, happen. Not to mention, we saw several groups playing the course in random order. To be honest, I suspect a lot of people "sneak on" to this course. I saw a single start playing in front of us starting at the 15th hole. Did he accidently skip a hole? Or did he just sneak on the back and goes to whatever hole doesn't have a group on it? I'm not sure, but I saw several groups or individuals show up and go to "wrong" holes.
The food here (vine ripe grill) is excellent. I haven't had anything bad and the staff takes pride in the food.
The range is pretty good. The condition of the course is comparable to other municipal courses in the area. For the price, it's a good deal. But the lack of a starter, the lack of any sort of enforcement or marshaling is embarrassing, and the pace of play is beyond slow. You're looking at a 4:45 to 5:25 round no question.
Kernwood Country Club
Played On 07/13/2020Great Private Course
Played here as a guest. The dining was closed and there was no food at the turn. The course itself was beautiful, fun and challenging course. The back 9 and the holes near the water are really buggy, so bring bug spray.
The price was about $100 for a guest. I thought that was a little steep. Granite links would be about $90 for the same time. Kernwood is private and Granite is Semi-Private. I liked Granite's course a little better, but you can't go wrong with either.
The Meadow At Peabody
Played On 07/08/2020Awesome Top Tier Municipal Course
This is a great course for the price. This is a "hidden-gem" in the area. There isn't a driving range and there isn't a cart-girl.
This course is very underrated. It's almost as nice as Gannon, which is right up the road. This course is challenging, but pretty fun. The condition is very good, and it's a good value for the money, could be $20 more per round I'd say. Greens are usually in good shape and not too many people.
Stowe Country Club
Played On 07/06/2020Fast course with good players, but pricey
This was the option in Stowe for me since I wasn't paying $250 for a monday morning round at the "Mountain Course".
We finished 18 in 3 hours, which is a great pace. The condition of the course was good and the course was peaceful, quiet, and relaxing. Loved playing in the mountains and had a nice round. I payed $100 (with cart) for the round, which is too much for what it was. I'd compare it to a $75 course in my area (massachusetts).
Overall a pleasant course during a vacation.
Larry Gannon Municipal Golf Course
Played On 07/01/2020If you can get a tee time... it's great
It's a great muni course with an option to "join". It's a great fun course with some challenging courses. The best part is it feels like you're far away from Lynn. It's a great wooded course where you barely see anyone else.
In 2020, it's been nearly impossible to get a tee time though. In 2019 we use to play there 3-5 times per month, but we have been able to get on only once this year. With Covid reducing the number of tee times available and no online booking, goodluck getting a tee time unless you are a "member"
Newton Commonwealth Golf Course
Played On 07/01/2020Fun little Muni
If your looking for a serious round in peaceful nature, probably best to go somewhere else. However, for what it is, it's a great option.
It's a great fairly easy course that's affordable, in pretty good shape and is fun and easy to walk.
Some of the fairways are "unfair". What I mean is they are so hilly that everything runs to a side. So even if you play a perfect shot, it can run and run and run till it becomes a bad shot. Not much you can do about that short of leveling the fairway, and I don't think they have the budget for that.
Overall it's one of my 'go-to' courses in the area. It's five minutes from my house, cheap, fast, and low stress. I wouldn't travel to come here.
No range, no practice area. But no real room for either of those things.
Olde Salem Greens Golf Course
Played On 06/03/2020A Dump of a Municipal Course
Yeah, this course is going to be a "no" for me. It's a quick 9 hole that you can walk in an hour and a half. However, the condition was not acceptable. It was 50% grass and 50% hard dirt. The layout was under construction in a lot of parts. Overgrown in other parts. I hated it. Wouldn't go back even if it was free.
