My Favorite Gaylord Course

Please don’t play here. If too many people find out how great this course is, it will be harder to get a tee time and they will raise the price.

In all seriousness, GGC continues to have the finest greens anywhere. If you find yourself above the hole, good luck! The layout is fair. There are easy holes and difficult, grip and rip holes and conservative, uphill, downhill. I just love this place. It exudes character and class. An old school country club where golf is the only focus. It’s really golf in its purest form.

I love Gaylord Golf Club. Stay away.

Greens are unreal!

This place was really nice. The greens are unbelievable. Three of us played, all single-digits, and none of us were prepared for the speed and sloping conditions. Up and downs look so simple but the ball just rolls forEVER.

I don’t have anything negative to say. They have those weird bunker/cart path combos made of gravelly sand. Pretty neat.

Oh...and BRING YOUR DRIVER. I have never seen fairways this wide. It made the whole experience more fun. The difficulty comes with the green complexes and approach shots.

The only reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is price. I booked through the course and they were going to charge $150. Just on a whim I checked GolfNow and they were only charging $89 for premium first-of-the-day tee times! $60 savings!!! Seems a little shady that the course was going to just let me overpay that much. Also (and I know this is nobody’s fault) there is a CRAZY amount of construction going on right now. Every hole had something in view that had power tools and Cuban music blaring. A little distracting but didn’t ruin the day.

Conditions are perfect

Played this with the wife early spring. Really have nothing negative. Big, wide, lush fairways feed into smooth, fast, receptive greens. Lots of water to add beauty but they keep it mostly aesthetic and don’t kill you with water in play every hole like most of Florida.

The whole area is very upscale and they are building the whole community up. Really nice. This is the type of place I could see myself moving to in a decade or so when I retire!

Don’t pass up the opportunity to play this one, it’s really a great day of golf. Everything you are looking for is right here.

Best value around

I almost don’t want to write a great review because I’m afraid too many people will read it and start packing the course! But this place deserves it. They’re doing it right at the Lakes.

This is my current favorite place in the Gaylord “golf Mecca.” First off, the staff is just wonderful. I always have a nice chat with the guy in the clubhouse who always seems like he’s genuinely interested in you having a great time.

The course has really improved over the last decade or so. It’s changed hands a few times and hardly resembles the so/so Lakes course from the Otsego club days. That being said, conditions are always great these days. Greens are receptive but not overly soft and always roll true. Fairways are lush and green. Grounds crew really takes care of it.

The layout is the real star here. The course has such a diverse array of holes with no two holes alike. There’s right, tree lined holes like #1 (IMO the hardest hole on the course!) and a few wide holes where the driver begs to be smashed. The view from the 2nd par 5 on the front 9 is my favorite spot in Gaylord. Amazing view and great hole. I could go on for pages telling tales of birdies and triple bogeys from this great course. It really has a little of everything.

The price midweek feels like you are getting away with something. Last year my wife and I paid $27 to play and I almost felt bad.

If this course had a range it would be perfect but it’s still worth 5 stars from me. You won’t be disappointed with this hidden gem in Gaylord. I play it a few times every year and it seems to just get better.

Best Value anywhere

I love this course. I have played everywhere from private clubs to dirt tracks and this place is definitely a great place to play for ANYONE.
First of all, the staff / owners couldn't be nicer. Secondly, it's a bargain. Most importantly though, you can tell that the owners care and love this little gem. The greens are great and the fairways lush. The front 9 is wide open so swing for the fences. There's a drivable par 4 along the road and an easily reachable par 5. But the greens are crazy small and crowned so you absolutely must be precise on the approach. One of the best shots I hit all year was a high 6-iron into #8 that held the pea-sized green. And then there's the back 9....hopefully you worked out the kinks with the driver because you'll need to be much straighter on the back which plays through the woods. Very interesting layout and peaceful, natural surroundings will make you so glad you decided to play here. Trust me. After I played here for the first time I said "holy cow, I was NOT expecting such a great course!"

Disappointed

First off, I was hoping for a "hidden gem" tucked away in the woods like nearby Heather Hills.
This place was not that. I am a bit disappointed in you guys, these reviews made it sound like decent place. The quirky layout felt cramped and weird. The first hole is a 3 wood to reach the par 4 so already there is unease at the tee box with groups of T-shirt and Jorts types telling me to hit. Most of the front 9 is blind tee shots to layup to water, followed by blind approach shots. You can usually tell where to hit, but can't see the ball land. This is okay on a few holes...but it becomes excessive here. It's especially frustrating to find collection areas in low spots where 2 or 3 holes converge and there's carts everywhere with people looking for their ball which they couldn't see land from the tee.
But some people like that type of tricky layout and with only ~5,700 yards to work with, I guess they needed to make it more challenging. It's not easy despite the low slope/yardage.
The conditions were terrible. Greens were bumpy and soft, "fairways" were worn and inconsistent. Lots of overgrown and unkept areas that make the course look messy. I'll never understand that. Why? Just get a wee whacked and tidy up a bit.
Every bridge or railing was falling apart, every cart path was basically just a collection of broken concrete.
But by far the worst thing is the tee boxes. They all looked like the morning after at a college frat house. Just divots, broken tees, unkept grass and very uneven.
I guess for $35 on a Saturday morning I shouldn't have expected much, but all the reviews on here make it sound like a nice course. It's not. It's a place to play your golf league and drink beers.
Hamburger at the turn was great! Also, the beverage cart came to us every 3rd hole which was awesome!

Decent track, worth a look

I played this with the wife during our spring break in St Pete Beach. The weather was perfect. Got paired up with two other fellow Michiganders and had a nice relaxing round. We saw an alligator on the course which was pretty cool for us northerners.

The conditions were decent. Fairways tended to blend into the "rough" without any real definition. Course was soft but not wet so maybe they just hadn't cut it. Greens were PERFECT though and that's what really matters. The layout is fine if not a little boring. Lots of doglegs with room to hit straight if you want. Generous landing areas at the corners. Some tree trouble if you're like me and like to see what the rough has to offer!
Back nine is a little more difficult with a bit more water to deal with.

Overall it was a good experience. My one critique is that as a non-member...they signage leading to the course made me feel like I was in the wrong spot. I had to pass 2 signs that said "MEMBERS ONLY BEYOND THIS POINT" before I could park my car. Once you walk in, it doesn't feel anything like a private club. It actually felt a lot like a muni if I'm being honest. No refreshments on course, shabby little hot dog shack at the turn, and a "nothing special" little clubhouse. I'm not complaining...I'm just being honest about the fact that it didn't feel anything like any private course I've been to.
Clubhouse had some GREAT deals on apparel and gear. Bought the wife some new Sketchers golf shoes and got myself a souvenir shirt!

TL:DR - worth your time. Fun, fair, and nice greens.

Once again, perfect day of golf

I am normally the type of person who tries to play a different course every week. I love golf courses and finding new ones and experiencing as many of them as possible.

My family vacations in St. Pete Beach every year and after playing this course last year I HAD to return for their "member for a day" GolfNow special. This place once again was TOP NOTCH. The conditions were great, the grass on the fairways was green and lush and the contrast it made with the lighter, browner rough looks really visually pleasing. The greens were beautiful and rolled true. I holed more putts than usual.

Once again, I took my son and they refused to let me pay for him!!! He is 10 and had a blast playing the course with me and his grandpa.

Lunch afterward was FANTASTIC. The food is really great in the clubhouse and was including in our price.

Overall...Keep it up Seminole Lake. I recommend you highly to everyone looking for St Petersburg area golf.

It's all true!

As somewhat of a golf course snob, I am always skeptical when I see superlative comments like "best greens" or "best value" however after finally playing Gaylord Country Club yesterday with the wife, I can say it's all true. I've played everywhere in Michigan you could ever want to play. I don't remember anywhere (including all the big names) having greens THIS good. Everything rolled true, without a bump or unpredictable turn. They are fast, undulating, and often penalizing if you hit the wrong side of the putting surface. Simply outstanding.
The layout is really nice. There are some short risk/reward holes as well as some substantial tests. But the par 5s are all reachable and there are mostly generous landing areas so it's not going to beat you up or take 3 sleeves of balls. The course is beautiful and thoughtful in all the right places, from the stone bridge on #18, to the various flower gardens around the tee boxes, to the well kept driving range.
I swear I don't work at the course! If I had one critique I would say that I could have used a sign on #9 to point to the correct tee box. I accidentally teed off on 18 by mistake. Also, the cart paths never go anywhere near the blue tees, so it's a little bit of a slowdown to have to walk 30-40 yards every hole.
Oh, and like others have said, I found it odd that they didn't correct the scorecard or at least post a note somewhere to mention that the little maps on two holes are incorrect.

This is definitely replacing the mid-priced courses on my list and moves ahead of many higher priced courses. I will certainly be back next year and probably every year. It's a shame I've been playing golf in the Gaylord area my entire life and this was the last one one on my checklist.

To summarize: best greens you will play. Immaculate conditions, a fun course that won't beat you up, and a bargain. DEFINITELY play this one.

Great Day of Gokf

I've lived in Oxford (about 15 minutes south) for 10 years and finally got out to play this course for the first time with the wife. I was absolutely blown away. I've played every course in Metro Detroit and this ranks up there with any of them as far as enjoyment. It's not the most challenging course in the world, but don't let that deter you. The fairways were like lush carpets, the greens were true, and the layout is fantastic. The elevation change really adds difficulty to a short course and makes the experience much more enjoyable.
You can tell that even though it's public, it has retained all the hospitality and attention to detail from the private days. I don't know why, but their hot dogs at the turn were some of the best I can remember having! The view of the clubhouse coming down the back nine is picture worthy.
Overall I am so glad I came out here and will DEFINITELY be back soon. If you are in the area, I would absolutely recommend this, especially if you want a chance at a decent score without having to sacrifice the beauty and conditions of an upscale course.

A great day of golf!!!

Great place

Not the hardest course in the world, but don't let the yardage fool you. It is long in all the right places and the green complexes are challenging. Strategic bunkering makes many tee shots a risk / reward scenario, The course was fun, but the real hero at Seminole Lake is the staff. We did the "member for a day" package and were made to feel just as welcome as a paying member. From the pro shop, to the starter, to the clubhouse manager...to the waitstaff...everyone we met was super friendly and accommodating. My 9-year-old son was with us and even though we offered to pay, they let him play for free! We let faster groups play through and the ranger came up and THANKED us. Many places will berate you for being too slow!
We will definitely be coming back to Seminole Lake every time we come to the Tampa area.

Doesn't care about golfers

This place has the potential to be a great golf course, however it will need to be sold to people who care. I generally can let a lot of things slide, but as a small business owner myself, I am constantly putting my heart and soul into my company to make sure it is living up to its potential. This place has so many little things that could be improved.
Let's start with the parking lot...its weird. At first I couldn't even tell if I was in the right place, there is no signage for bag drop or anything and its kind of a hike to get to the clubhouse. Fine for me, but may pose an issue for any elderly or disabled golfers. No big deal, but worth mentioning. Could easily be fixed by just simply having a bag drop at the edge of the lot like every other golf course everywhere.
Second complaint: The tee box markers (you know, the little black, blue, white, red markers to tell you where to hit from) only have one of each per hole. COME ON!!! I could go buy some wood, chop it up, paint it, and solve this problem in A SINGLE DAY. How can you have a golf course where there are no legal (according to the rules of golf) tee boxes!!!? So stupid and could be so inexpensively fixed.
Third complaint: I played with my wife and young son. We were looking to grab some lunch (11 am) after our round so we hiked back to the car, changed shoes, dropped off clubs, and walked back up to "Hank's " bar and grill" at the clubhouse. I asked the bartender for some menus and her response floored me: "our kitchen is closed on the weekends"

What?

I said "do you know when people golf?" and her dumb response was "well, it's just a small family owned course and they don't want to open the kitchen on the weekends"

What a bunch of lazy idiots. If this was my business, I'd be there from sun up to sun down doing everything possible to make sure my customers have a great experience. If you are going to have a restaurant...wouldn't it make MORE sense to open WHEN THERE ARE THE MOST NUMBER OF PEOPLE AROUND??? Makes no sense!!!!

Third complaint: On number 9, they had the tee box marker all the way at the front of the tee box...but there were 4 foot tall weeds at the end of the tee box making the only viable shot a wedge (on a 450+ yard par 4). Even from the back edge of the tee box (where I moved the tee box marker to out of courtesy) it was sketchy to be able to clear the weeds with a driver. Why??? 2 minutes and a machete would solve this problem.

Bottom line: This place doesn't care about golfers and looks like there are no actual golfers involved in any of the decision-making. The layout is actually quite fun and the conditions are fine. The greens rolled true and fairways were lush. Sure, it was a bit rough around the edges...but could easily be cleaned up with a little work.

They need to sell this place to someone who really cares and can take care of it. It needs SO LITTLE to be a decent place. I have trouble reconciling why nobody is addressing the problems I mentioned as I'm sure they would be noticeable to any golfer.

Horrible layout for golfers

I am puzzled as to how this course has received so many positive reviews. The best I can figure is that most of the reviews on here are from high handicappers who go out to enjoy beer and lose 3 sleeves. I played here twice and I will NEVER play here again. The second time I only played here because a client of mine wanted to play it. I LIVE in Oxford so distance is not a factor for me. The layout is just awful. Who wants to hit a 7 iron off the tee? I mean seriously, this course is ridiculous. Most of the time you basically just have to guess because you are hitting over a hill to a narrow dogleg. I actually shot decent score and hated every minute of it. You rarely get to have a reward of seeing your well hit shot land in the fairway because the landing area is usually out of sight. You never get to hit driver (except hole #1) and you are constantly questioning where to hit the ball. The funny part is that ALL (literally all, with no exceptions) of the golfers that I have talked to have the same opinion of this course which is why it is so curious that this place gets such good reviews here. It is a ridiculous layout but it is pretty and in great shape.
