Good value, needs some work

The fairways were in real good condition. The greens need some attention regarding the repair of divots, new and old. Seems nobody sees them as they walk across the greens. Amazing that they can see to putt, but not see the divots! But the worse is the tee boxes. Completely destroyed. Some have patches of grass, but those hit like a community driving range. Clumps of jagged grass is as bad as no grass, which some of them are guilty of. Bunkers were fairly well maintained.

Great views, very challenging

First time playing here. Easy to find, but parking is at a premium. Overflow is a bit of a walk, but not a deal breaker to me. Easy check-in, unlimited range balls with your fee. Almost every hole is a blind shot, so course knowledge is a must for a good score. Cart service was good and the views great, some breath taking.

Horrible Greens

The Greens were the worse I have played on in quite a while. Fungus or dry rot (whatever technical term needs to be applied) on every hole. Standing water around most Greens and we haven't had any rain in weeks, Tee Boxes were not in very good shape either. Didn't see any maintenance personnel working on any of the issues all day.

below or above

This course had one (1) (almost) level fairway. The rest were the most uneven fairways I have ever played. The ball was either below your feet or above your feet, with varying depths. On top of that, the ball was either on a downward slant or an upward slant. The surfaces were good to hit off of, with minimal bare spots. It wore me out trying get in the best position (ie. ball above my feet but on a downward slant). I don't mind elevation changes, and there was a lot of that. It was the extra geometry required to hit mostly small greens that caused my frustration. Overall, the course was in real good shape and the layout was different from about any other I have played recently. 3 or 4 tee boxes were shot, but the rest were good. Only a small amount of bunkers and they have been neglected/abandoned for some reason. This course is not my cup of tea, so to speak. But others might enjoy the roller coaster fairways.

Bad to worse

I used to play here a lot when I lived in Citrus County. Been away for a year and hoped to find some improvements here. I played 2 weeks ago and although the course needed work then, I had hope because there were 4 or 5 holes on the back 9 that had maintenance workers on them and their efforts were reflected on those holes. I assumed there would be more work around the course and make it enjoyable again because I love the layout. Very challenging fairways to hit, requiring good ball striking. Well, I assumed wrong regarding the maintenance. Fairways and tee boxes needed mowing. Some tee boxes I had to pull weeds to make a hole to tee up so I could strike my ball off my tee without hitting weeds first. Within a few steps off the greens the rough was like cabbage. Hard to find your ball and virtually no chance of striking the ball first instead of cabbage. Most of the greens were in fair condition (I have played here when they were a lot worse). But the bunkers, fairway rough and tee boxes were horrible. $20 Hot Deal was waaayyy too much.

Thank you for taking the time to review the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. The current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve, and we are working towards getting things up to par. Thank you for playing The Spruce Creek Preserve Golf Club. We hope to see you again soon.

Course in great shape, especially for this time of the year regarding rainfall. One small issue: fringe around the greens were just mowed, but the clippings were laying in clumps all around the edge of the greens. No way to putt from one or two feet off the green without doing a bunch of landscaping. Small issue, but worth mentioning that bagging green and fringe clippings, especially when wet/damp would be appreciated.

I have played here a lot over the last 3+ years, and this course (conditions) vary each time. I have played when most every aspect has been well maintained and I have seen it in near disrepair. I would grade it in the middle right now. Not the best, but not the worst. I definitely wouldn't pay more than $20 to play right now. Some of the Tee Boxes were what you would expect, but some were a dirt/weed combo that had you searching for a spot to Tee off from. As usual, the Greens were riddled with pitch marks, but they were in good shape regarding grass and roll (I have never been on a course in Marion, Citrus or Hernando County that has so many pitch marks on each Green!). Some Bunkers were playable, but not all of them. The Fairway Bunkers have been neglected, but some of the Greenside were OK regarding sand. NONE of them have had their edges trimmed. How hard can that be?? No other course has a problem trimming the edges of their Bunkers. Why is it always knee high here at Silverthorn? Fairways were hit and miss, regarding grass cover. Some had large areas of weeds, and some had some dirt patches. The rough........don't hit into the rough.

Pasture-like

I have played here plenty of times starting in early 2016. The course was in bad shape when I started, but it was almost worth the $10 Hot Deal then. Then it turned around and became a good course to play because some effort and $$ were being put in to upkeep the grounds. Seems now it has reverted back to a poorly maintained course. Pro Shop has been updated and the carts are top notch. What you really pay for is a course where Tee Boxes have grass and mowed,Fairways that have grass and mowed, Greens that have grass and mowed. Bunkers have a no attention paid to them either. Just horrible playing conditions from the first Tee to the last Green. Won't be back and I wouldn't recommend, either.

Horrible Greens condition

Played here a lot over the last couple of years, and have critiqued both the good and bad. Stayed away for about 3 months hoping that some work would be accomplished on the back 9 Greens. Hopes were dashed, with some of the worse Green conditions I have ever played on. Holes 13 & 14 were Moonscapes, at best. Couldn't find any straight line to the hole with grass from any position on the Green. Price stays the same, conditions are worse. What is the thought process? I DO NOT recommend Sherman Hills to anyone until they replace some of their back 9 Greens (17 & 18 are in need of major repair, as well).

Good shape

The course was in good shape from Tee Box to Green. Some of the Bunkers were in bad shape, but we did have a lot of rain a few weeks ago, and I contribute that to some of the conditions we found. Most of the Green-side Bunkers had sand, although not all did. Other than that, the overall condition was above average.

Needs some work

Some of the Fairways were more hardpan than grass. Some Tee Boxes were short on grass, as well. Greens were in pretty good shape. If you get a good price, like a $10 Hot Deal, it's worth it. Any more than that and you can find much better bang for your buck. Carts are the best around, by far!

Excellent shape

IG&CC has it figured out. No matter what time of the year, you can count on great Greens and better than average Fairways. A few of their Tee Boxes needed work and they are in the process of fixing them now (a couple of temp Tees, but not an issue). The Bunkers have been worked and are in good shape as well.

Good shape

This course doesn't do water very well, and we have suffered an unusual amount of rain in Dec, so some soggy patches were expected. But overall, the course was in good shape from Tee to Greens. Some of the Bunkers were unplayable with heavy mud and standing water, but we just played from behind them when possible and moved along smartly.

Big let down

I recommend this course based on the potential I saw, not the conditions I played in. Some of the Tee Boxes were really rough with bare ground and weeds. Quite a few Greens were in bade shape, as well. Fairways were missing grass in places, and the Rough was, well......rough (unplayable). I have played with a lot of people that have told me I had to try Lake Jovita out. It is over an hour drive, but I put a few Promo codes together and offset the high price and drove down from Citrus County. Really a big let down.

First & Last

I like to play different courses, and I found this course pooping up on GolfNow. Latest reviews were 3 years old, so I took a chance. Great people in the Pro Shop and the Starter was very helpful with info about the course; its history, current situation, future plans, etc. This review is by no means a knock on any of the staff or people that call it home. This is to let others like me that like to venture to, and play at new/different courses. As I started my round, I quickly understood the explanation I got before I started concerning the conditions. Again, great people, but the course was in a deep state of neglect. Not because the good people didn't want to present a good product, but it is/was a Muni and the amount of $$ (or I should say lack thereof) appropriated for it has caused it demise. I hate to write this, and I hope everyone understands that, to me, it is not a reflection of the staff, but a reflection of the $$ reality.

Downward trend

I have golfed here plenty over the last 2 years. I have seen the poor conditions and the great recovery that followed (and have reviewed them under both circumstances). I played 5 weeks ago and didn't write a review, as I felt the poor condition was an anomaly. I was wrong. 5 weeks later, the Greens are still in terrible shape, with some on the back 9 completely void of a grass surface. The home building on the back 9 is a complete distraction and is probably part of the lack of maintenance being provided to the course back there. I won't return at any price until I read that the Greens have returned.

Better than expected

Played here a couple of times over the summer, and I noticed that there was a lot of maintenance going on each time. The overall improvement has been remarkable from then till now. Bunkers have been worked hard and play as well as any around. The Greens have been maintained as well as any I've played in Ocala. Fairways are green, with some weeds in spots, but overall they are very playable. Great value for the Hot Deal $.

Still some bad Greens

As usual, Tee Boxes, Fairways and Bunkers were in good/great shape. Some better than others, but overall, worth the $$. HOWEVER, the shape of some of the Greens deserves criticism. For the $$, you would expect to play on quality Greens for 18 holes. Not the case here. Starting with #2 Green, and several others (#16 Par 3 is as bad as any in the area), patched sod, bare ground/hard dirt and small holes plague your ability to line up and putt. In addition, recent sanding hadn't been brushed in, leaving clumps scattered on every Green. I always recommend Twisted Oaks, but I also expect decent Greens. Very disappointed the last few rounds in that regard.

Worth the Hot Deal $

I have played here several times, and am impressed with the maintenance effort. Not a PGA course, but I love the layout, the overall conditions from Tee to Greens are average-to-above average, and well worth the Golfnow Hot Deal $.
