Not bad for $9

Haven't played here in months, thought I'd give it a try based on recent reviews. Reviews stated Greens were good, rest of course generally lacking. I found these descriptions accurate, especially the Greens. Although they were slow, the balled rolled as smooth as you could ask for which allowed you to figure out the speed, and they were very receptive to approach shots. The Fairways required 'Preferred Lye's', the Bunkers were more grass/weeds than sand, and the rough was, well........rough. But for $9, I enjoyed finding Greens that were playable and rolled true. If the $ stays same, I would go back.

Lacking Info

I have played here a couple of times before and the course conditions improved each time. This time there was no alert for freshly punched/sanded Greens on Golf Now. I wouldn't have driven 40 minutes to play here if I knew the Greens were still healing. In addition, most of the Tee Boxes are in bad shape (no grass, lots of weeds and dirt). I will come back at a later date, and hope there will be Full Disclosure IRT course conditions.

Good greens, but............

Been a couple months since I played here, so I was surprised at the overall conditions. The Greens have held up very well. In fact, most of them on the back 9 are as good as any course in the area. However, most of the Tee Boxes and Fairways are back to the condition they were back in the late Spring/early Summer drought stage. The Fairways are so rough that they can shake you out of the cart if you aren't careful. I moved my ball to a preferred lay when I could find one within a 1 foot radius on the Fairway, but even then the ball would sometimes act like I was hitting off the cart path. I recommend this course based on the Greens. If some time/effort was put into making the Tee Boxes fit for use again and the Fairways smoothed out and seeded, I would praise this as one of the local gems. Right now, I'm staying away until I hear/read of some improvements.

Great Condition

Thought I would take a minute and comment on Inverness G &CC. Course is in great shape; Greens are some of the best in the area right now. Fairways and Tee Boxes were as good as any around, and the maintenance team was out mowing all of the other areas between, allowing me to easily find my ball when it decided to leave the playing area from time to time :) Hard work and dedication are paying off here. Great job Staff and Maintenance team.

Greens are shot.....again

I can't recommend playing Twisted Oaks right now, as much as that pains me to say. My favorite local course has let their Greens rot again. Fairways are in great shape, as are most of the Tee Boxes, but ALL of the Greens and some of the Tee Boxes are dead and void of any sign of green grass. I wondered why there was nobody around for a 1204 Tee Time, but by the time I approached the first Green, I figured it out. There are courses in the area that have been able to maintain their grounds and charge less.

Worth the trip

First time playing here, previous reviews from some months ago led me to believe the course was in disrepair. Last few reviews trended towards improvements, and I couldn't be more surprised. The recent stretch of rain has paid dividends to all the courses, and this one sure has taken advantage. Greens were a little slow, but we got true rolls. Tee Boxes were being treated for weeds, and Fairways were being mowed while we played. Bunkers need some attention, but I was very satisfied after a drive down from Citrus Co. I will be back.

What happened?

I played here for the first time 18 April, and I thought the course lived up to it's good reputation. When I played yesterday (4 weeks later), the conditions had deteriorated significantly. The quality of each Green eroded, the Tee Boxes were tore up, and the pace of play was slower then before. Almost 5 hours on a Tuesday morning/afternoon was uncalled for. 6 groups, including us, were lined up at the 3rd hole, and it never thinned out at all. I hope the course gets the attention it obviously got before, I really liked the challenge and layout. I checked 'I recommend' based on previous conditions, and with the hope that with some rain and attention, others will find it a good deal for the $ as I did back in April.

I'm sorry that you didn't find the course in as good of condition as before. Royal Oaks, like many courses in this area, overseed for the winter months because the Bermuda grass goes dormant. We all like green playing surfaces and that is why we overseed. Every year we go through transition. Transition is when the overseed checks out and the Bermuda grass is trying to re-establish itself. That is why we drop our rates starting May 1st. Slow play is an issue everywhere on a busy day. We really strive to keep the pace of play at 4 hours for our course but some days that is a very difficult task.

Greens need help.

I played here for the first time about a month ago and really appreciated the condition of the entire course. I return a few weeks later and the Tee Boxes have been over run by Fire Ants! Also, some of the Greens slipped all the way down to GIR or 'preferred lay' just to have a putt that had a clean shot to the hole. They went down hill fast. It really took away from the decent fairways and challenge of the design.

Well Maintained

First time playing here. Long drive (50 mins), but proved to be worth it. Tee Boxes, Fairways and Greens were green and smooth. Hard to find green fairways most places this time of year, but thy have put in a good effort, and it shows. Greens were slow but smooth. My only issue is that each Green seemed as though they were shaped like a thimble. I can't remember any that were flat, or even semi-flat. Each pin seemed to be on the edge of a slope, which ultimately lead to putts running off the edge. Still, I loved the layout and course conditions, and I will be back!

Weeds!!

I play here often, and have seen the amount of weeds (some knee high) on some of the Fairways and all of the Tee boxes increase tremendously. The Tee Boxes are in really bad shape. If the Greens weren't in such good condition, I'd be playing elsewhere more often. Don't let this course turn into a cow pasture!!

Outstanding!

2nd time playing here, got a great Hot Deal, and enjoyed the heck out of it. Green Fairways are few and far between this time of year. Greens were real slow, but rolled rolled true. Overall experience from the Pro Shop to the 18th hole was great!

Rough Fairways

I started playing here last summer and found that with new ownership, course improvements were underway. The Greens and surrounding fringe, as well as the Tee Boxes, have received a lot of effort and work, and it shows. The fairways, however, are getting worse each time I play there. They are in the worse condition of any in the area. Hope they get some attention soon. I like the layout and the greens have really come around, but it's just too hard to hard to hit an approach iron off of grass less hard-pan.

Still one of the best for me

I have played here many times, but never submitted a review and feel that I should share my views/thoughts for anyone looking at this course for the first time. This course is so much fun to play, especially the Quarry holes on the back 9. The fairways have developed a lot of bare spots/dirt patches lately, but I'm sure this will be addressed to bring it all back to tip top shape. If you like fast greens, Brooksville CC is a place for you. They are the quickest I have played in many months. Definitely worth the Hot Deal $$.

Better every time

The work being done on this course is definitely providing improvements. The irrigation system is being redone (easy work around on course during play) and the over seeding has really improved the greens and fringe. The carts are some of the oldest and most outdated you will use in this area, but that shouldn't be a deterrent. Great layout with some challenging hole. It's not the longest (still doesn't have the Tips as noted on the score card), but still good value for your Hot Deal $. Keep up the effort on improvements!

Bad from the road in to the clubhouse

I played based on the last few reviews that were posted (July/Aug), and I don't know what could possibly have taken place between those month and the end of Nov, but it was clearly the course in the worst overall condition I have played in Florida! Starting from the turn on to the driveway leading up to the clubhouse, and continuing on to what must have been cement cart paths at one time, the pounding on my back and kidneys was exhausting. The Tee Boxes were grass exempt and literally rough with lots of dirt. The fairways looked green from afar, but once you stepped out on them you realized they were a thin layer of weeds laying on hardpan (seems water is in short supply). Greens were as torn up as any I have seen. This course needs lots of work to make it worth your money.

Good back 9 greens

First time playing here. Loved the elevation changes and the overall layout. Some interesting and challenging holes throughout. The front 9 greens all had significant issues that were being treated with sand. We took some liberties trying to find a line to the hole that didn't cross Ground Under Repair on most every front 9 green. Fairways and tee boxes weren't PGA standard, but serviceable. Back 9 was a complete opposite; Tee to Green was rough, but the Greens themselves were really maintained well. Carts were ancient, score cards and Tee Box Marker listed Blue Tees for Tips (no Blue Tees on any holes) were a couple of minor talking points, but you could see maintenance teams out and about and I think they are doing the best they can to make this course serviceable and enjoyable. For the Golf Now $, not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Fun.....but needs some work

I drove 30+ miles ($10 Hot Deal) to try a different course. We got off a couple minutes early, and the pace of play was not an issue. Not a long course, but a few holes require the right club or you can find trouble. Most of the trouble came from the conditions around the greens. Some holes had real think/deep rough at the second cut, others were dirt patches and weeds. Pitching/chipping was extremely hard on most holes on the back 9. Some of the Fairways were clearly defined and in decent shape, but most were patchy without definition between the Fairway and the first cut. Some of the Tee Boxes were sandy and weedy. However, once I realized/accepted I wasn't on one of the finer courses in the area, I enjoyed the company, the layout of the course, and the fact that I paid $10. If you only enjoy the finer tracks, maybe this one isn't for you. But if you and the guys want to get out for a round and not pay too much, CCC is a good place to play.

Always a good value

I play this course often, as I feel the GolfNow prices are a good value. Only problem is that there are parts of the course (mostly roughs/off edge of fairways) that never get a chance to drain. In fact, for the last couple of months, parts of the cart paths on holes 7 & 9 are impassable because of the standing water. In spite of this being a low lying course so close to the Gulf Coast, they seem to keep the fairways and greens in pretty good shape. If you are reasonably close, this is a challenging course, alligators included!

Pleasant surprise!

I have been playing local Citrus Co. courses for the last 9 months, and was looking for a different course to change things up. I picked Ocala Palms and really enjoyed the round. The layout was nothing like I expected, but it was pretty challenging and worth the drive. The greens were the best I have played this year; they held an approach shot, and rolled quick and true. I look forward to a return trip soon.

Much improved

I have played this course a couple of times, once in May and then last month. It is not a Championship Course, but it has really improved to the point where I recommend this place. It has some rough spots, but for the Golf Now price, it is worth the ride.
