Veterans Golf Association Tournament

We played our tournament a day after there was a torrential downpour in the area. It was cart patch only, but the course had drained incredibly well nonetheless. We had a shotgun start with two flights per hole so the round took is almost 5 hours, but I blame that on the tournament. The greens are new Bermuda greens, that roll extremely well. There are some very short holes on this course, but they make up in being tight. It's definitely a course were your shot placement off the tee will lead to your success or failure. Since it's a university course they don't serve any beer, but the amenities are reasonable priced and the staff is very accommodating. The practice facility is hands down the best I have ever seen. Multiple greens at varying yardages on the range, great pitching and bunker practice area, and the best practice green I've ever been on as they have all the little gimmicks. I highly recommend playing this course and spending some extra time just polishing your game here.

Post Downpour Round

Played this course on a Friday after heavy morning rain, so instead of playing cart path only they let us walk. The ProShop guys are very accommodating and gave us a great rate considering the weather. Biggest downside was seeing how poorly the bunkers drain on this course. The layout is phenomenal and a true championship course with extremely challenging bent grass greens that undulate dramatically. It appears that after Davis Love III gave up management of the course the upkeep has struggled. You can see this course is in dire need of a cash infusion to renovate. I recommend getting out and playing it very soon before its no longer enjoyable. With good weather and in the summer it is a great course to play, especially if you want to test your skills as a low handicapper.

Saturday Morning Round

Played this course with three friends, so our flight consisted of two scratch golfer and two 4 handicaps. We were initially worried that the pace of play was gonna be slow as we had a older foursome in front of us, but the starter and course rangers were phenomenal in keeping up the pace of play. It has to be said that the staff runs the course as professionally as one can hope for. Practice area and Driving Range were great, with two putting greens in case there is overflow. The course was in great condition, as they oversee the fairways and it was nice to play from a green fairway instead of burnt out grass. Greens are bermuda grass and extremely difficult to putt. Overall a challenging but fair course layout. Jack Nicklaus Jr definitely makes your shot choices more obvious than his father. Highly recommend playing this course if you're in the area.

Early Monday Round

This municipal course is in great condition for the amount of play it sees and the public status. The greens run at about a 9 on the stimpmeter, and run fairly true. The fairway wound throughout this nature preserve park and present a tough challenge as your score is made up in how intelligently you place your tee shot. For advanced players this course isn't about playing driver on each hole, but rather distance control and shot shaping. The only complaint is the pace of play during high season, as some players walk and others ride holding up the pace of play. I've played plenty other public courses in the area, and this one might not have a championship layout but is great to expose weakness in your course management.
