Beautiful Area

This course is like a hot rod. Great when working but will break your spirit on a couple holes. I play a solid 8/10 handicap on hard courses from the tips. I had 4 birdies and mustered a 90 from the Gold tees. Course is not long even in wind but layout is terrible on several holes. This is target golf but your yardage counts the most. Greens are great on putting. I had 6 one putts from all distances but if you come in from over a 145 yards and high your ball will literally go 20/30 yards past the front side of the green. I hit a high soft shot with soft balls and this happened so forced me to get close and several holes within 45/65 yards on par 4's to make the ball stop. It worked but on holes that you are off a tad every hole has a hill angle and must hit 25 yards before the bank because the ball will go O.B right in front or just off course like ten yards. There are holes that do need to be worked on to be declared golf. I lost 7 balls and 3 were great shots. Not sure which areas are O.B. or hazards. The whole course should be just hazard to speed up play. Loved the course beauty. Loved the locals and staff total professional. Greens are great on putting but the ball does not stop from over 150 yards. Aim 10 yards short of the 150 for tee shots and ball will rolls another 25 yards past and that was my wisdom while thinking on how to play the course.

"Like a hot rod" !! Excellent analogy. Thank you for the great review and we hope to see you at the course again soon. PS... our new scorecards will be here next week with the local rule that all deserted areas are hazard (per 2019 new rules of golf).

BlackHorse runs its own race

I just completed playing a tournament at Del Monte over the weekend and got a good deal at Blackhorse. This course is fantastic for the golf course layout. This is the way golf needs to be designed around the country. So many cookie cutter Nicklaus, Miller, and Robert Trent Jones courses have designed perfect layouts for their own model of fabrication. The course uses the terrain amazing. The tee boxes do provide you a solid view of the course if you do not know the layout. The fairways are pure and the first tier of rough is in good condition. I never had a bad lie all day long. The greens are massive so, you need to fire at the pin because they have two and three tier greens and on the wrong side automatic three putt. So, know where the flag is and give yourself some extra distance. The greens give you a target to aim at along with bunkers that are difficult and steep along with grass around them is tough and you will want to be in the sand more than the grass around it. The greens provide you safe places to bail out and this is the gem of a great course architect. The course will reward you for a good shot off the tee and you do not have to be perfect. The key to the course is your iron game. You must have your distances dialed in and the yardage and outcomes are fantastic. I did not have to back away from to many shots and only due to the wind. The greens are beautiful and the shapes of the tiers are genius but you must be on the correct side. The course has a reputation for being long and I played from the blues with a little wind and I hit 4-6 Irons on some par 4's and reached the 5th short Par 4 with a driver pin high. I also hit a 6 iron and had 52 yards in. There are four par 4's that are not long at all but the second shot is critical. I felt the distance that people talked about did not apply to my round and I'm not a bomber. The pace of play for me was great 3:30 hours and I played 2-3 balls testing out distances and iron but they just aerated the fairways and greens so, kept many at home. The staff was great and the players on the course knew how to play. I had two groups allow me to go through with a smile and that is refreshing. I give this course a 9.5/10 on course layout. The fairways and rough even being aerated are solid and in three weeks this will be a 9/10. The greens are tough but honest 7.5/10. I will play this course again for sure and would take this layout over Silverado and many other top tier course. The views are fantastic and the strategy of playing the course gives you multiple options so, if you score high you made poor choices. Perfection not necessary and good shots will give you good outcomes. Stay on the high side on the greens because those greens are not going to be an automatic up and down. A great course and one of the best in the Nation.

Johny Miller has bad Mojo

I have played golf for over forty years. Thousands of rounds. Played in HS and College. I know courses, designers, and players. Still personal position so, take what it worth. Staff excellent. Very professional and top tier. Course maintenance world class. Greens perfect and razor fast. Fairways beautiful condition. Ball was plugging in on every tee shot including my irons. No rolls but course is short so not needed. Design was the worst design courses I have every played. I heard from solid single digit courses from a few close buddies in Bay Area they would never play this course again. I agree. The worst design of any course. Cart only on the path but that is ok keeps course in great condition but you have to haul across the fairways. Fit Bit 6.8 miles of walking and I hit fairways. I prefer to walk but this course was dreadful in design. The fairways on some of the par 5's coming in were around 18 paces from fairway to rough and massive trouble. Example, 16 tee off with a 5 iron and perfect center of fairway 210. Approach shot 7 Iron perfect 152 yards. I had 89 yards to center of green with a wedge and the fairway was only 10 yards wide. You cannot go long on this course or your doomed for trouble. You play it safe and your shots even when in the center of the fairway you have a shot coming in that does not reward you if your are 110 yards our or 150 yards out. The greens are beautiful but insane and I played Augusta but you can at least understand where to hit those greens. You get on the wrong side here and impossible to two putt. You can be in the center of the green and still have an impossible putt. The course was referred as Mickey Mouse. Johnny Miller did a horrible job and does not understand the difference between a US Open Champion and us weekend warriors. I play in single digits and ended up going irons off the tee because a driver was crazy and a 3 wood did not reward you. The fairways were beautiful but insanely wet so the divots were world class. I'm not a digger or scooper but play very little divot and I had some 14 inches coming in with wedges that had the ball going sideways. The course yardage is short but honestly I have played the SR Fairgrounds and enjoyed the layout more. A beautiful course for sure and great staff and people but honestly, I will never play this course again and this is the first time in my life stating that. I played with good players today and on the 12th hole they called it Mickey Mouse Golf. Hazards coming in the fairway and through the fairway on shots that for most seniors could hit but must lay up. I play long and found that I had to lay up on par four's because the layout has no harmony, rhythm, or understanding. I read about the course and sold sod to golf courses and I know drainage and layouts and this was the worst. A stated not here to complain. It is beautiful but we had two groups in front of us come off the 18th and tell us they were sorry for a 5:45 hour round and had a hard time. I told them we struggled as well. I would tell Johnny Miller that he took perfect land and destroyed it and my thoughts are far from being alone.
