Great Service - Course is improving

Decided to give this place a try while in the area. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Got some lunch at the turn and the grill staff was great, too. Really couldn’t ask for any better treatment. Course is definitely a work in progress with mixed conditions. You can tell they are trying hard to improve this course and it will just be a matter of time until the course conditions get better. I will play here again the next time I’m in NMB and look forward to seeing the improvements.

Always improving

This course is always fun to play. It’s not Augusta National, but it’s got a challenging little layout that is harder than it looks. You have to think your way around and choose your clubs wisely. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Good guys.
It was pretty wet the day I played, but that’s to be expected after all the rain this summer. The greens were in fantastic shape, but were a tad slow. Every time I play here I see some minor improvement. The restaurant and pro shop remind me of being at camp. Rustic, plain and modest. Play the course to have fun and enjoy being surrounded by nature. Snobs need not apply.

BYOB

The course was in good shape and it’s an enjoyable layout without many hazards. Very scorable. Some of the traps had a lot of rocks and were pretty hard. Other traps were fine, so it just depended on which one you were in. The only issue we had was that there wasn’t enough drinking water on the course. It was a very hot and humid day and we were pretty drained without having sufficient water. The beverage cart didn’t come around until we were on #16 which was way too late to help. Otherwise, it was a good day and we’d definitely go back.

Great day

I got to play as a single on a beautiful day. This is one of my annual “must play” courses. It’s a beautiful setting. The layout is diverse and challenging, but also fair. Lots of elevation changes, so club wisely. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Even the refreshment cart lady was super. Highly recommend you give this course a try if you haven’t yet. My reason for not giving the conditions 5 stars is there are tons of rocks in the traps. Hopefully they’ll get that resolved, because otherwise it’s great.

Worth the trip

Decided to try this course after reading the reviews and I’m glad we did. Very nice layout and very good conditions for a municipal course. The greens were nice and quick. I did have to repair a lot of other people’s ballmarks, but that’s not the course’s fault.
Unfortunately, there is the awkward transition from hole 11 to 12 where they were forced to change #12. Would’ve been nice if they could’ve kept the original layout.
The pro shop staff was very helpful and friendly. Same with the food and beverage staff. The starter was efficient, but a little uptight. He could lighten up a little and still do a good job.
We all agreed we want to put this course in our rotation and look forward to our next round there.

Great Day

Love this course. Got a bargain with a Hot Deal and had a great day. Entire staff was super helpful and friendly. There was hardly anyone on the course when we played, so I couldn’t help but wonder if the regular greens fees are too high for most people. I think if they lowered their rates they would get more traffic and make a lot more on additional purchases in the pro shop and grill. We got lunch, dinner and drinks there. All were good. Absolutely no complaints about anything. We’ll definitely go back, but we’ll wait for another deal.

Pleasantly surprised

We enjoyed this track quite a bit for a number of reasons. To start with the staff was great and very friendly, from the pro shop to the starter to the wait staff at the restaurant, everyone was helpful and friendly. The course itself has a nice variety of holes and is very playable, but without being too easy or mundane. If I had to come up with any con for this course, it would be that the greens were a little too flat. If the greens were a little more undulating, this course would be even more fun. We encountered some slow play here and there, but that’s to be expected on a muni. We will definitely be going back.

Needs to be reworked.

I had heard a lot of negatives about The Player course, so I went in with low expectations but an open mind. It wasn’t as bad as what I’d heard. The layout is the biggest issue. Basically, the waste areas are much too large and the landing areas are too restrictive. Some of the fairways are angled strangely or too short or narrow. There are several holes that you need local knowledge on, due to blind shots or surprises once you see the green. The pro shop has a complimentary map of the course which is a MUST if you’ve never played here. There are a few holes that just need to be reworked by either cutting down trees or re-grading the fairway to expand the landing areas. The back nine was definitely laid out better and we all preferred that.
As far as the conditions, it’s still early in the season and they had just recently aerated the greens (unputtable), so I can’t judge those. The fairways were in good shape, but the tee boxes were not. Some tee boxes also need to be leveled. Some were either crowned, sloped or undulated. Easy fix.
One thing that was annoying was that on each of the first 7 holes we had to wait to hit into each green because they were mowing them hole by hole in front of us. This was probably only due to bad luck and timing, but the grounds crew wouldn’t stop and wait for us to hit, they actually continued to mow while we waited for THEM to finish.
I will definitely go back later in the season and give this course another chance. I would only hope that management see the pitfalls and work to improve the playability of this track. Work on lengthening some fairways and expanding the landing areas. Remove two terrible blind shots (you know which ones) by re-grading the fairways and give players more options on ways to play a hole.

Getting better

This course continues to improve. Definitely recommend to a better player.
The greens were still recovering from being aerated recently, but otherwise the course is in good shape for this time of year.
It’s a good test with some interesting holes. Some approach shots are very challenging, so be prepared to score a little higher than your handicap.
Looking forward to playing it again.

Nice day

Had a nice autumn day. Course was in good overall shape with only minor issues here and there. A good course that could become a great course with some minor improvements. Barber poles and GPS in carts would be nice. Definitely going back when it warms up again next year.

Good Challenge

Nice to see this course continue to improve. Layout can be quite challenging to high handicappers. White and blues had too much separation when we played. Whites were way up and it was disappointing on some holes. Usually play the blues, but had some shorter hitters in our group. Course could use more ball washers and drinking water ( or beer cart stops). Barber poles w/ yardage or GPS on carts would be an improvement too. Overall it's a good value and test of anyone's game.

Find it. Play it.

Really glad I gave this course a try. As others had noted, you'll need to gps it ahead of time because it's in the sticks. Choose your route on the busier roads. Some public road signage would be a big help.
The pro was extremely friendly and accommodating. Took time to explain parts of the course to us and offered some options and advice. Pace of play was steady with only a few short waits to play.
The course itself has a really nice layout. It's very scenic with a rustic feel offering a good variety of holes which will test your entire game. We played the blue tees and it was the right choice for us (8-12 hdcp). Don't play the tips unless you're a single digit hdcp. This course is pretty "meaty" . Not the longest, but challenging with the right amount of hazards. The greens are not easy, but roll very true. Be smart about where you leave your misses. Now, the things that I think need to be improved on are the condition of the sand in the bunkers and the areas of rough around the greens. There were a number of spots in the fescue that were just mud and dead leaves. If they clean those up it will make a big difference. Assuming those will be improved as the season goes. My only other minor criticism would be the cart paths need to be smoothed out and marked better. Some of the tee boxes weren't in very good shape. There were only a couple of holes that had tee signs with the hole info on them, so we depended a lot on the range finder. Hole #8 is reachable for a big hitter. It could use a little redesign because there aren't many options on how to play it. Also there's a completely useless giant bunker in front of the tee on #15 that should be closer to the green or just be eliminated.
In conclusion, I'm really looking forward to going back to this course and playing it in the warmer months and possibly again in the fall. It needs a little polishing, but it has the makings of a premium course someday.
