About
Been playing off and on for 40+ years. Got my wife hooked about 15 years ago and we try to get out at least once a week. We play 18 holes in 2.5 to 3 hours. Slow play drives me nuts. If you insist on playing a 5 hour round so be it. Just remember that those behind you might not be so inclined.

Kingarrock Golf Course
Played On 09/30/2014Don't miss this
I usually don't get too excited about 9-hole courses, but this one is special. You play with hickory-shafted clubs and hit balls designed more than a hundred years ago.
If you want to fully appreciate today's technology play a round at nearby Kingsbarn or St. Andrews and the play like they did in the 1800's. It's a great way to unwind after a long day of golf.
You also use "Reddy Tees". They're the patented short red tees that replaced the sand tees in the 1920's.
Play this course and will probably be your most lasting golf memory of Scotland.

Played On 09/27/2014A different layout
This course was fun and had some challenging shots, but the thing that will always stick in my mind is the layout of the front and back nines. On what would normally be considered the front nine you will find holes 1 thru 4 and holes 14 thru 18. And in the area that would normally be the back nine, you will find holes 5 thru 9 and holes 10 thru 13. Sounds confusing, but it actually works alright.
The greens are firm and the back nine area has some very interesting holes that will get your attention.

Played On 09/16/2014The proverbial hidden gem
Most tourist golfers when they are in the area, head for nearby Kingsbarn or the courses at St. Andrews. If they don't include this course on their to-do list, they've missed out.
It's been used as a qualifying course for the British Open. That should give a pretty good indication of the quality of the course itself.
Another point in its favor is the lack of the crowds you have wade through at the other more well-known courses in the area. The course is so quiet that often twosomes or even singles are permitted. You won't find that at the Old Course even if you are lucky enough to get on.

Played On 09/16/2014Golfing history
After spending a very informative and pleasant half hour talking to the pro who informed us that the very first British Open was played here in 1860, we decided to play a round if possible. He squeezed us on and we had one of the more enjoyable rounds of our trip.
Even though the 17th is the only original hole from that first Open, it was still a thrill to tread the same grounds a all those long-passed greats.
Anderson Tucker Oaks Golf Course
Played On 07/13/2014A little cramped
Not a bad course but you always have to be wary of errant shots from other golfers. The place is wide open and the holes are right next to each other. It's just something else to think about on your backswing. Slow play can also be an issue.
The Links at Rolling Hills
Played On 07/12/2014One of my favorites
It had been too long since my last round here. I had almost forgotten how much fun this place could be. The multiple tees give players the option of choosing one to fit their game. I'm always less than amused by those who insist on playing the John Daly tees and fail to reach the front tees. This course is long enough without adding unnecessary length.
Golf carts are included with your green fees due mainly to the distance between holes and on those warm summer days, you'll appreciate the wheels.
The greens are the most entertaining for me. They play fast and have tons of movement to them.
Churn Creek Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2014Not bad for a 9-holer
When it's in good shape this is a fun little course when it's in good shape. And therein lies the problem. Maintenance is streaky to put it mildly. I've played it when it's good and really enjoyed my round. On the other hand, I've played when it's not and seriously considered asking for my money back. In any case, give it a shot and maybe you'll get lucky with the conditions.
Riverview Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/06/2014Watch out for that first tee shot.
When you are standing on the first tee it's tough to concentrate on hitting the ball because the view is so beautiful. It's on a bluff overlooking the river and it feels like you should be able to drive it forever so don't over swing. The elevation will do all the work.
It can feel a little cramped at times with the holes playing back and forth in a somewhat confined area, but it's generally well-maintained and can make for a relaxing round of golf.
River Tasalmi Golf Course
Played On 07/05/2014Not my first choice
When it first opened, it was a good little course. Unfortunately, it has gone through numerous changes since then. It would probably be one of my last choices for a round of golf in the area.
Grape Ranch Golf Club
Played On 06/22/2014Save your money
A friend of mine is a member here and he invited me out for a round. He is constantly complaining about the condition of the course and I found out why. When this course first opened years ago, I played a round and was very impressed with it. Sadly, it has gone downhill since then. Maintenance is all but non-existent. Save your time and money and find another course. You'll enjoy your day a lot more.
Churn Creek Golf Course
Played On 06/15/2014Not bad for a 9-holer
For a 9 hole course, this can be quite a bit of fun. The main problem can be maintenance. It tends to be a little inconsistent. If you catch it on a good day it can be a lot of fun. If not, you'll probably not be as impressed.
Gold Hills Golf Club
Played On 06/15/2014The best public course in the area
Have been playing this course off and on since the early '70's. It went down hill for awhile, but the last fifteen years have seen a marked improvement. They built a new clubhouse and changed some of the holes for the better.
It's a fun and challenging course that is sure to make your golfing day and enjoyable one.
St. Andrews Links - Old Course
Played On 06/07/2014You gotta play here
If you're a serious golfer and you have the opportunity to play here, you had better take it. The history of the place demands it. It overwhelmed me on the first tee when I was thinking more about where I was than hitting my golf ball. It was a dead shank that drew a few chuckles from my playing companions. After those first tee jitters though the game got much better.
The course itself is like nothing you will find here in the States. From blind shots to bunkers that you could hide a small house in, to the double greens, one of which is almost an acre square this will be a round that you will never forget.
There is also the added bonus that when your sitting with your buddies in the 19th no golf story will cause more envy than when you casually mention that you've played the Old Course.
Championship at Lake Shastina Golf Resort
Played On 06/07/2014If slow play is what you are looking for
This used to be one of my favorite courses in the area, but not anymore. The course itself is great and the views are fantastic, but the pace of play has gone from slow to ridiculous.
The last time (and believe me it will be the last time!) we played the front nine in just over 2.5 hours which is borderline acceptable. But, it then took us 45 minutes to play numbers 10 and 11 and when we got to number 12 there were 3 groups on it. We called it a day and came home.
It's still a great course, but you better be willing to spend a seeming eternity playing it.
Lake Almanor Country Club
Played On 06/01/2014A tad slow for my taste
The course itself isn't that bad, the last few holes have substantial elevation changes that you don't often find on 9-hole courses. But, it's located in a huge residential development and it seemed like everyone who lived there felt obligated to play golf on this little 9-holer. Fortunately, we were only signed up for 9 holes. It still took us 3 hours and trust me, it seemed longer.
If you want to play a 9-holer in the area, take my advice and try Lake Almanor West across the lake.
Lake Almanor West Golf Course
Played On 05/31/2014A Great Little 9-holer
We normally avoid 9 hole golf courses. They tend to be cramped, flat and not very interesting. This is an exception to the rule however. It's set back in the trees and has some moderate elevation changes. We usually play Bailey Creek across the lake and then catch West Lake on the way home. Makes for a great golf week-end.
Bailey Creek Golf Course
Played On 05/25/2014Worth the drive
This is a hidden gem that is somewhat off the beaten path. Unfortunately, we don't play it as often as we would like but when we do it's always special. It's an interesting course in beautiful setting. If you get the chance to play here, take it. You won't regret it.
Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/11/2014A study in contrasts
A fun course that plays like two different ones. The front nine is nice, but a little conservative for my tastes. The back is where the golf course really begins. Plenty of trees and elevation changes.
Eureka Municipal Golf Course
Played On 04/19/2014Not bad for a muni
As with most municipal golf courses play can be a little slow at times, but it's still a fun course to play. During the winter high tides the course is sometimes so beware. I've got a great picture of a rowboat on the 9th fairway. A nice course and reasonably priced.
Beau Pre Golf Club
Played On 04/06/2014My old home course
First started playing golf here when it was a 9-holer. Then it grew to a 12, then a 15 and finally a full-fledged 18 hole course. A good course, but the highlight is definitely the hill holes. The course is pretty flat except for a series of holes that climb a nearby hill and give the place some character.
Thank you for the positive review....Hope to see you again really soon.
