Canyon

Rode the Greens (6537/70.7/135) in around 5H as a single. Supposed to play with 3 singles, but they were MIA... and the starter let two 4somes go off before he would let me go. One group quickly let me play through, the other did not. Got a sarcastic "thanks for playing so slow behind us" from one of the guys as I drove up to #18 green. Breezy, partly cloudy and around 65.

Tom Fazio design. This is THE most spread out course I have ever played. They will not allow walkers because there are 4-5 holes that are about 1/3 mile to the next tee box. Course is not well marked. Very easy to get on the Mountain course by mistake.

No tricked up holes, the forced carries were fair. The tight holes were balanced by more open holes. However, there are no holes I would classify as wide open, at most you had a bailout on 1 side.

Tees overseeded with good coverage, lush and nice to play from.

Fairways were overseeded and lush and deceptively undulating, few flat lies.

Bermuda rough is dormant and generally penal, the ball sat down and it's clumpy.

Sand traps were plentiful and very well maintained with good quality, light sand.

Bermuda greens are firm and smooth. Medium fast to fast and very consistent from green to green. Probably the quickest Bermuda greens I have putted on since I last played here. Immaculately maintained.

Customer service other than the starter was excellent from all encountered. Very nice grass driving range is included in your fee. Excellent layout in very good playing condition. Highly recommended.

Rode the Purples (6676/72.1/136) in 4H twilight with GK Guru's John, Brian and Dave. Great to play with a couple of out of the area guys I previously had enjoyable rounds with. We finished 18 in the dark due to a National Club Champion Tournament that ran over. We were unable to start until after 1 pm. Partly cloudy, fairly calm and around 60. Thanks to John for setting up and to Desert Willow for having the guru group out.

Tees mostly lush and level but after that tournament, were pretty chewed up for divots.

Fairways lush and good to play from.

Rough very lush. Ball sat up, not overly penal except it cost you roll. Usually good to chip out of but deep enough to be penal.

Greenside traps had good quality sand. Decently maintained, with a generous amount of thick sand. Waste bunkers were firm and not as well maintained as the greenside traps.

Large greens putted medium fast speed and were firm with some rollout.

Customer Service always excellent here from when you drop your clubs off out front to when you pick them up after the round. Nice GPS on upgraded carts that have ports for electronics. The all grass driving range is included and is excellent with a nice practice chipping area. Drink Cart around several times. Ice/water stations every few holes. Excellent and very fun layout to play. Recommended, IMO the best public course in the Greater Palm Springs area.

Classic Club

Rode the Blues (6711/72.6/134) in around 4.5H early morning with GK Guru's Gary, Pedro and Dave. CPO the first part of the round slowed things down. Fun, relaxed group to play with, great to see old faces. Thanks to John for setting up and to Classic Club for having the guru group out.

Very calm by Classic Club standards, but it was brisk early and still not warm even by the time we were finishing around noon. Fun Arnold Palmer design, nice elevation changes, lakes and valleys coupled with trees that would make you think this is more of a mountain than desert course make C.C. a very unique layout for this area.

Tees level and lush with good coverage. Most divots already maintained.

Fairways were the only thing not almost immaculate. Mostly lush with a few thin areas here and there but still quite good, just not as excellent as everything else.

Rough lush and green from horizon to horizon. Just deep enough to be penal w/o being TOO penal.

Sand traps excellent with deep, thick, fine sand that both looked and played great.

Greens firm and medium fast. They putted excellent.

As always, customer service was excellent from everyone encountered here. Complementary water and good range balls on a 1st class grass practice facility. Drink cart out making the rounds. Upgraded carts with nice GPS and ports for electronics. Huge, beautiful clubhouse, everything about this place is top notch. Definitely recommended.

Palm Valley

Rode the Whites (6191/70.0/123) in a charity Tournament. Fun event with catered food/drinks on every tee box and the course closed except for the tournament. POP brutal @ 5.5H.

Ted Robinson design. Up/down rolling hills, hundreds of tall palms but not overly tight. Resort type layout with a decent amount of water and small greens. Fun track even if no specific hole was memorable.

Tees were lush and well maintained for divots.

Fairways lush and very nice to play from.

Rough was penal. Thick and deep enough that several balls in our group were lost just off fairways.

Traps had thick sand and were okay to play from.

Greens were firm and putted medium speed. Smooth with few ball marks.

No GPS on the basic carts. Large, well stocked clubhouse. Complementary waters in the cart and range balls on the all grass range was a plus. Customer service was excellent from everyone. Overall, decent layout where every hole is surrounded by well kept, middle class homes or condos. Recommended.

Quail Lodge

Rode the Blacks (6464/71.3/128) in about 4H, 15M with Matt, Ron and Justin twilight. Bright and chilly with a slight breeze most of the afternoon.

Classic Robert Muir Graves par 71 design. Beautiful, tree lines layout. I thought the layout was very good but not great with 18 solid holes of golf. However, the playing conditions were great overall.

Tees lush and near immaculate except for todays divots.

Fairways lush and very well maintained with few unfixed divots. Looked like carpet.

Rough lush and well maintained. Just deep enough to make you think twice about longer clubs.

Sand was thick and excellent quality, very well maintained.

Greens had been recently punched with small tynes that IMO hardly affected the way they putted. Quick and smoother than you would think. I thought I saw the lines well but consistently played too little break. You better not be above a few of the pins on several holes, #4 comes prominently to mind.

Customer service excellent, saw the drink cart several times and the starter was on the ball and informative. Carts had nice GPS and there were numerous restrooms on the course. All grass driving range with complementary balls was a plus, however it topped out at about 200 yards. Really solid course, highly recommended.

Rode the Blues (6622/70.9/112) on a GN "Hot Deal" in calm, overcast conditions around 55.

Layout is fun with with five par 3 and five par 5's, par 72. Starts with two straight par 5's and later have two straight par 3's on the front. Three par 5's and three par 3's with only one par 4 through 7 holes, very unusual. Numerous dog legs and some of the largest greens I have ever played on keeps the layout interesting. Greens are some of the flattest you will ever play, but you could have 100' putts on numerous greens here.

Tees were all over the place. Some almost immaculate, some thin, some maintained like the rough. Mostly level with few divots, but many were hard to get a tee in the ground they are so firm.

Fairways were usually decent. Mixture of grasses and firm.

Rough also a mixture of grasses with mostly lush coverage. The secondary rough has been removed and is quite punitive because it plays like a plowed field, clumps of unlevel dirt.

Most of the sand traps were long ago removed and are now HUGE grass bunkers. You can clearly see where the traps were with steep faces. Very challenging to play out of even with grass because it is thick and clumpy. The few sand traps remaining looked okay.

Greens were surprisingly good. Very moist, they held irons well. Medium to medium fast speed and mostly smooth.

Quick and efficient check-in, the people here treat you great. I played 2 balls and only saw a couple of other golfers out there. Pro Shop is a trailer, no Starter, Marshall or Drink cart. The gas powered carts do not have GPS. Course marked every 50 yards old school. Playing conditions much improved from my last visit here. Still rough around the edges, but perfect for some on course practice after a long layoff. If you do not expect too much, the layout can be fun. Have to avoid going in the surrounding vineyards OB, but with no water and little sand, this isn't a very difficult course even from the Blues.

HR

Rode the Blues (6751/72.1/136) in over 4.5 H with Perry mid day on a GN "Hot Deal". Sunny, fairly calm and around 70 made for pleasant golfing conditions. Played behind a slow 4some and waited most shots.

Tees were the weak link and a mixed bag. Some thin and not that well maintained for divots, others immaculate?

Fairways mostly lush and good to play from.

Rough was fairly lush close to the fairway. Thick even though mostly mowed down. Thinner the farther you got from the fairway.

Sand traps had good quality sand and were very well maintained.

Large, undulating greens were smooth, quick and firm. They rolled excellent, holding irons with minor run out. And when I say quick, a ball you thought you died at the hole could have 8-10' coming back.

Customer service excellent. Quick efficient check in but no on course services. Carts have been upgraded to include GPS. Course is not well marked for yardages if you do not have a measuring device of some kind. Challenging course in nice condition overall. Both the layout and the greens are well above average. Best course within at least 50 miles in all directions, definitely recommended.

Legends

Rode the Blues (6587/72.8/133) in about 4.5H mid day with Ron and Marvin. Thanks for an enjoyable round guys! Thanks to John for coordinating the guru outing and La Costa for having us out. Partly cloudy, high 60's with a little breeze made for nice golfing conditions. We caught a slower 4some on the 3rd green and waited most shots the rest of the day.

Layout has 18 solid holes but nothing spectacular. IMO, Champions is the superior 18 @ La Costa. Very playable, not overly tight with enough trees and water to keep you focused.

Tees were decent, nice coverage and only the par 3's needed divot attention.

Fairways were mostly good to play from with good coverage from a mixture of grasses.

Rough had decent coverage and has many different grasses. Lies could be all over the place even a few ft. apart.

Traps looked good but did not play well. Thin layer of sand over hardpan is great for fairway bunkers but is not good to play out of greenside onto fast greens.

Greens were medium fast and held balls well. Softer than most greens I play, so players not fixing ball marks was a challenge. As were the coot droppings. Overall, I probably liked them more than most.

Very playable, only the traps were not above average IMO. However, I was disappointed in the playing conditions for a course of this stature that charges rack rates well north of $100. Drink cart around a couple of times and there was an open snack stand on the course that was accessible on both 9's. Cart guys very attentive. Okay range on mats with complementary balls. Most available parking is a hike from the golf shop. Overall recommended if you get a deal, but would not pay full price for what we experienced today.

Rode the Blues (6829/72.7/136) with FirstFlight FX-101 in 4.5H playing behind a 4some. Thanks to Chuck for a fun afternoon. $55 w/cart is their twilight rate. Weather clear, fairly calm and in the mid 80's.

Playing conditions very playable. This layout would be really challenging to walk as numerous tees are a long way from the last green.

Tees had decent coverage and were mostly well maintained but several could use leveling.

Fairways were decent, firm with good coverage.

Rough mostly lush, several inches deep and thick. Lost ball rough unless you are right on top of it.

Sand traps nicely maintained with brown sand. The bunkers I was in/around I would have considered good "but for" the many rocks in them.

Large, undulating green complexes are challenging. Firm, they were mostly smooth and putted medium fast.

No drink cart out, the Marshall was out patrolling. Friendly starter and the check-in was efficient. No GPS on the basic carts. All grass driving range was a +. Nice course in above average condition, recommended.

Bernardo Heights

Rode the Blues (6722/72.5/130) with John, Mike and Ron in 4H, 45M twilight. Breezy, clear and in the 70's. Very fun group to play with, enjoyed seeing all those guys again and catching up. Thanks to BH for having the Guru's out and to John for coordinating!

First time here. Overall, probably the best Ted Robinson design I have played. Not overdone with water features, up/down rolling hills with 18 fun holes. Plenty of variety, plus on the layout. And the conditions were excellent overall.

Tees mostly good. A few were thin and needed some attention for divots.

Fairways had good coverage and were nice to play from.

Rough had good coverage and was thick enough to be penal even though not that tall.

Traps had good sand and were well groomed.

Greens were a real treat to putt on. Firm, medium fast and smooth, they rolled really well. Some of the best greens I have putted on in recent memory.

Carts were nice but did not have GPS. No cart gal but there was a busy snack stand on the turn. Nice driving range on mats with complementary range balls. 2 putting greens that were both as nice as the on course greens. Fun course to play in very nice condition, I would definitely come back. Rode the Blues (6865/73.1/132) with John and Rex, who played the Golds. 3H, 20M POP, these Seniors were both fun to play with and quick! Started brisk since we teed off before 7A, but was nice when finishing 18 just after 10A. Fairly calm and clear.

Kikuyu tees were improved from my last visit. Decent coverage and most divots were filled in.

Fairways had good coverage and were decent to good.

Rough had good coverage and could be penal because it's mostly Kikuyu.

Sand traps were well maintained with a decent amount of sand.

Greens were punched a little more than a week ago, so I did not expect them to be good. They must have used small tines, because they were 95% healed. Medium fast and pretty smooth. They accepted irons and pitches with little run out. I actually thought they were better than when I played here a month ago.

Customer service was excellent from everyone encountered. Kudos to Abby, who got me right out so I could make my later tee time elsewhere. No drink cart today. Basic cart with no GPS. Adequate grass driving range with plenty of stalls. Well stocked pro shop. Definitely recommended.

Rode the Blues (6600/71.8/131) in slightly over 5H. Played with Steve, Andrew and Larry, excellent group, we had a good time. A little breezy and sunny, very nice golf weather. Thanks to John for coordinating and Oak Quarry for having the GK Cup Final crowd out.

Considering they were closing the course for fall maintanence right behind the GK Final group, conditions were better than expected.

Tees were thin and dry getting ready for over seeding.

Fairways mostly decent, almost always had a decent lie with a decent cushion underneath.

Rough dried out. could be anythinf from low and not penal, to hardpan to lush and thick.

Traps much improved since last visit with nicequality sand.

Large greens were pretty good considering they had probably not been mowed in 2 days as they dried out for aerification. Still rolling medium to medium fast, they held irons well. Many ball marks and irons held well.

Customer service very good from all encountered. Plush carts with the Shark Experience GPS. No drink cart, but snack stand open on the course. Good, all grass range was closed today. They did have a Titleist fitting day, thanks to Brian for some new Titleist! Very good and playable design that I like better the more I see it. Highly recommended.

Rode the Blue/White combo tees (6477/70.8/125) on a GN Hot Deal. Been a while since I played when it was overcast and around 60 when we teed off. Played with Chuck and Chris joined us to make it a 3some from hole 11 on. We played the first 11 holes quicker than we did the last 7 after hitting a wall of golfers in front of us.

My first time here and Chuck described the course perfectly. Set on rolling hills, the front is tree lined and is an excellent 9 holes of golf. The back has a couple of holes bordered by a wash, less trees and more homes are prominent than on the front. Not as aesthetically pleasing as the front 9. It rained this morning, so the fairways were soggy and many traps had standing water.

Tees mostly good with a few areas that needed divot repair.

Fairways had some bare patches but were mostly decent.

Rough was thick and mostly lush.

Traps were poor to very poor, and they would have been poor even w/o the rain. Tons of rocks, some quite large.

Greens rolled great. Smooth and medium to medium fast. They were very receptive to holding shots with the rain, so tons of unfixed ball marks.

Customer Service minimal, they had an open snack stand beside the Pro Shop. Carts were basic, no GPS. Grass driving range down in a valley. I thought the layout was good and the conditions were better than I expected. Only downside was it can be noisy on many front 9 holes. There is a fire station on one side, a school on the other and busy streets run parallel to many holes. Close enough to me that it will get more than an occassional play. Recommended.

Rode the Blacks on the North/West combo (6288/69.8/122) in 3.5H on a GN Hot Deal. Matched up with Andrew, Dave and Jack, excellent group to play with. 95, fairly calm and sunny.

Course still playable right before over seeding but is getting dry.

Tees mediocre, some had not been recently mowed. Decently maintained for divots.

Fairways mostly lush and nice to play from.

Rough mostly lush and penal. Deep, thick Bermuda in most places.

Sand traps had decent sand and were okay.

Bermuda greens putted medium slow speed and held irons with some run out. Firm and early Fall Bermuda bumpy.

Customer Service excellent all around. Cart staff is excellent. Well stocked pro shop. No drink cart, but there was an open snack stand at the turn. Single rider carts @ no extra charge. Carts have Shark Experience GPS that measures to the center of the green. Grass range was okay with complimentary range balls. Recommended.

Rode the Blues (6865/73.1/132) with Itslikeimsayin, Ben and Shane in slightly more than 4.5H. Tee sheet packed, we waited on most shots AD. Breezy, not too hot and overcast.

Great venue for Mark and I to play our GK Cup match. We both really like the Billy Bell traditional parkland layout set on rolling hills. Most fairways are tree lined with no houses within sight with traps on both sides. Greens were well bunkered and the par 3's were challenging.

Kikuyu tees were the weak link. Some very nice, some poor. Many were lumpy, some crowned and the par 3's in particular needed divot attention.

Fairways had good coverage and were decent to good.

Rough had good coverage and could be penal because it's mostly Kikuyu.

Sand traps were well maintained and all I was in were in good shape with a decent amount of sand.

Greens were only medium speed, they looked quicker than they were. But they were soft and accepted irons and pitches with little run out. They rolled well, but being soft, many had marks that needed to be repaired before you putted.

Customer service was excellent from everyone encountered. Saw the cart gal early in the round. Basic cart with no GPS. Adequate grass driving range with plenty of stalls. Well stocked pro shop. If I lived closer, this course would be in my regular rotation. Base pass required. Definitely recommended.

Very poor customer service

Rode the Blacks (6720/72.1/127) mid day with Chuck and Tom using GM in slightly over 3.5H. Sunny, breezy and 108 made me glad the POP was moving until we caught a slower 4some on the back.

Tees had decent coverage with few unfixed divots.

Fairways semi lush with some brown areas. Mostly good to play from.

Rough semi lush mowed down low and not that penal.

Sand traps very nicely maintained with thick, good quality white marble sand.

Large Bermuda greens putted medium speed and are firm. Few ball marks and reasonably smooth for late Summer Bermuda.

Nice, all grass driving range. Basic carts do not have GPS or ports for electronics. Plenty of ice/water stations on the course. Santa Rosa would be a challenging course to walk with many tees a long way from the last green. Recommended.

Customer service is usually excellent from everyone here. Quick efficient check-in and no on course services as usual here. Normally I don't expect much from golf course customer service so do not get riled up if it is just okay or even sub par. I rarely comment about what I perceive to be poor customer service unless it is REALLY bad.

Chuck/I had a GM voucher good for 18 + replay. We are teeing off on #8 in round #2 and a cart guy drives out and very gruffly states he needs the cart, he wants to go home? We tried to say we have 11 more holes... didn't even finish the sentence and he says he is taking the cart and that they should have told us when we checked in that carts had to be in by 5pm? Can't we just leave the cart by the cart barn? No, has to be in now was the response. So in 108 degree weather, Chuck & I walk/carry holes 8/9 and call it a day 9 holes short of what we intended.

No where on the voucher, when I made the tee time or @ check in was it mentioned that carts had to be in by 5pm? We were not allowed to tee off until noon because the men's club had blocked out the morning tee times. So basically we had 5 hours to get in how ever many holes period?

That translates to me as this. They want the extra $$$ that they can generate partnering with a 3rd party vendor using their marketing machine in their slow periods... offering 18 + replay deals to entice buyers. But they do not really want to honor all that the voucher is good for if you are restricted to a 5 hour window to use it?

Rode the Blues (6687/72.2/127) in 3H, 15M with RGM2525 early morning. Thanks to Ron for setting up on a GM voucher. Breezy, clear and around 95 as we were finishing.

Up down rolling hills, rare to have a links style layout in the greater Palm Springs area. I enjoy this layout not only because it is better than average but also because it is so unique for the area.

Entire course is drying out with fall over seeding not far away, but still very playable.

Tees level and decent coverage. A few needed divot repair.

Fairways dry with decent coverage. Played firm with lots of roll out.

Rough thick and punitive for the most part.

Traps well maintained and all i was in had a decent amount of sand.

Greens medium speed and firm. Late summer bumpy Bermuda.

No on course services during the week in the summer. Nice, well stocked pro shop, beautiful clubhouse. Adequate water stations and restrooms on the course. Basic carts do no have GPS. All grass range included that has a decent short game area. Recommended.

Rode the Blues (6782/72.7/131) with RGM2525 who was using an UP voucher. Thanks to Ron for setting up. 105, breezy and clear meant there were no challenges on POP middle of the day. We set our own pace and played 18 in around 3H.

Like the 50 year old Billy Hines Traditional Palm Springs layout. Many holes I find challenging because a straight Driver off the tee may put you through a fairway. Shot shapers course. Lots of mature trees line each fairway. Some overhang the fairway right on the line you would prefer to play. Stiff par 3's, from the Blues 225/201/217/174. Rarely do you see a course average over 200 yards on their par 3's. Two are over water and I used 4 different irons, so they provide different looks, just none are short. Overall an excellent collection of holes. Tight in spots, but plenty of holes that had alot of room, you were just going to have tree challenges if not straight.

Bermuda tees were okay for late summer, only the par 3's needed divot attention and most were level.

Bermuda fairways had decent coverage, nice to play from.

Rough was a mixture of grasses and uniformly maintained around 2-3". Mostly lush with good coverage.

Sand traps were well maintained with fine, brown sand/dirt.

Bermuda greens medium speed and firm. Irons held okay with some run out. You had to give longer putts and chips a decent whack to get them there.

Pro Shop closed after noon. No on course services. Luis in the pro shop and the cart staff are outstanding here. All grass range and practice area is decent, but did not utilize today. Carts were nice but no GPS. Water/Ice stations @ the clubhouse. Recommended, fun course.

Rode the Blues (6614/71.0/125) on the North/South Combo in the GM/GK Plays. Played with Sparky14 and John, nice group to play with. Dreadful POP, 5H, 15M. There was frequently at least 2, if not 3 groups waiting to tee off on all the tees by the back 9. Sunny, around 80 with a 1-2 club wind most of the round.

Tees mostly lush, level and nice to play from with minimal divot damage.

Most of the fairways were lush and immaculate. A few were poor with large bare areas.

Rough was thick and punitive, usually 3"+ and difficult to advance longer clubs out of.

Traps were excellent. Nice fine sand and very well maintained.

Greens rolled great. Medium fast and firm, everything released.

Course has 27 holes, East currently closed for fall maintenance. Customer Service was excellent, everyone very attentive and the cart gal was around numerous times. Nice clubhouse and restaurant/bar. Numerous putting green and short game areas. All grass range. Liked the layout, tree lined fairways that were mostly ample in width framed by numerous fairway bunkers on most holes. Several creeks and lakes with little elevation changes. Overall, fun course in very nice condition. Recommended.

Rode the Greens (6705/71.3/124) in slightly over 2H twilight. Played with 2 guys who were good and had playing fast down to a science, we played 18 basically in the dark to finish. Low 100's, breezy and clear.

The Resort course is definitely the better of the two Tahquitz courses. Older, traditional track without many upgrades. Few homes around the course is a +. Like the layout. however, the playing conditions, while better than the Legends are still mediocre.

Bermuda tees were semi lush, mostly level and in decent condition.

Bermuda fairways are mostly generous in width and were semi lush with some brown patches.

Bermuda rough was mowed down low. Mostly semi lush, but there were many browned out areas that were thin to semi hardpan.

Traps were decently maintained with mostly fluffy dirt.

Bermuda greens were smooth but slower than the greens on the Legends course. Medium speed at best and they are firm.

No on course staff and the restaurant was closed late afternoon. Few water stations on the course. Customer service was excellent with the pro shop and cart staff. No GPS on the basic carts. Decent, fun layout. Usually a good budget alternative in the Palm Springs area, but would wait until after fall over seeding based on what I experienced today.
