Great Bear Golf Club
Played On 06/26/2019Really Great Course
We golfed with another couple at Renault, told them we were going to vacation in the Poconos and they recommended we play Great Bear. It was a great recommendation on their part. We have not played many Nicklaus designed courses, so for us this course was a treat. Mr. Nicklaus makes you think, there were not many shots where you could just take out a club and hit it. Coming from flat southern New Jersey it is nice to play a course that has some elevation & elevation changes, but not where every shot is a blind one. This course fit the bill nearly perfectly. The last two par 5(s) in particular were thinking holes, wish I would have known there was trouble in back beside the obvious trouble in front. It was a nice touch to have bottled water every couple of holes available as it was a fairly warm day (high 80s guessing). This course must be really pretty in the fall. The locker rooms were wow too. We are going to add this course to our Pocono Mountain vacation tour.

This was the first time in a couple of years we golfed here and it may be a couple of years before we go back during the summer. In deference to the course we were told they were going to be busy that morning (our tee time was late morning), but having a course smack in the middle of any resort is a juggling act. The second hole in particular (last time we were here, it was the 10th hole), resort guests just walk across the fairway without a care in the world. We had to wait minutes as two oblivious guests moseyed across the fairway. Later in the round we caught up to a foursome who were doing who knows what. We are all for promoting the game, but resort guests ( I am guessing because some were wearing bathing suits) setting a snail's pace (no rangers around) because they felt like "golfing" does not make for a fun round for everyone following. We know the twosome behind us eventually gave up and just left. It is an interesting course with many decent holes, a reasonable green fee and a nice finishing hole, but there are too many non golf related distractions that prevent me from recommending this course during the peak season. I would recommend playing this course during the non summer months (or first tee time of the morning during summer?), for a better golfing experience.

We have loved this course since it has been open and try to get down to play it at least once a month. The wide fairways and roll on tee shots does help shorter hitters like us compensate for the overall long length of the course. There are enough sets of tees to challenge more skilled golfers. Course was soggy the day we played, but it rained (1.5") hard the night before. The greens have always been excellent and true. The course itself is showing some of the typical summer wear, but overall vs other similarly priced courses it was in very good shape. Agree with bunkering issues previously mentioned. They are better than they were at the start of this golfing season, but still problems with drainage and rocks in them. The staff always treats us very well. Can't say enough nice things about all of them. Bank ownership of the entire resort property does bring with it tighter budgets, which we hope an eventual new owner will ameliorate.
