Always Solid

Hilton Head National is my go to round when in the area. The course is always in really good shape. And it is usually cheaper than rounds on the Island. The price has slowly increased over the years. I paid $109 this morning. And I’m pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve paid over $100 there. I feel like for that much range balls should be included. But they are not. Also, the greens had been sanded this morning it looked like-which I know if necessary-but customers should be given a break on the price. Never should a person have to pay over $100 and have sandy greens. But with all that said it’s a great course. Other than the sand on the greens it was in great shape. The layout is really fun and won’t beat you up. I struggled with the driver nightly today and still was within a couple shots of my average. It’s a second shot golf course for sure. And even though the greens were sandy. They still rolled pretty good.
You start off with a medium length dogleg right par 4 to a pretty big green. Number 2 is a longer par 4. With a very elevated green. You don’t want to miss your approach left. 3 is a straight away par 5 that is a good chance for a par. 4 is a medium length par 3 with a carry over a pretty big waste bunker that runs from tee to green. 5 is a shorter pretty hard dogleg right. 6 is the signature hole. A short par 4. With water all down the right and a cross bunker that eats up half the fairway. There are several options on how to play. The green is long and narrow. 7 is a short par 3. With marsh right and long. 8 is a long left turning par 5. With a small green that slopes off on all sides. 9 is a short straight away par 4. As is 10. Both are good chances to score. 11 and 12 are both dogleg left par 4. 12 turns more and is more up the hill than 11 but both are harder holes on the course. 13 is a short downhill par 3. There are several bunkers around it. With a really deep on hidden behind the green. 14 is a medium length dog leg right par 4 with a carry over a waste bunker on the approach. 15 is another shorter par 3 with the green sitting at an odd angle to the tee. 16 is a long par 5. You have to keep your shots to the right hand half of the fairway. Otherwise a large tree will block out your approach from the left. 17 is a shorter par 4 to a plateau fairway that drops downhill to the green. 18 is a good finishing hole. With marsh on the right that cuts in and constricts the fairway about 100 yards out. The approach is uphill to a large double green it used to share with an old 9 holes that were taken out when the by pass was built.
All in all it’s a great day on the course for an average golfer. And you won’t be disappointed if you play here.

Good Round

Cleghorn is in good shape for early this summer. The fairways and rough are growing in nicely. A few dirt areas in fariways which stay in the shade and dont get enough sun. But they dont affect play alot, and overall are in good shape. Greens rolled really smooth and were also in good shape. I did think they were pretty slow. They looked fast, but they just were not. The tees were in the worst shape, and they werent terrible. Just chewed up and bare on several of the white tees.
The course is one of the more challenging around. Alot of elevation changes and doglegs. Just not an easy course.
1 is the easiest hole out there. Slightly uphill, but straight par four 315 or so from the mens tees.
2 is a medium length par 4 dogleg right to an elevated green surrounded by bunkers in the front. Anything right bounces in the woods.
3 is a 170 yard downhill par 3.
4 is a long dog leg left par 5. The tee shot plays downhill, the rest of the hole plays pretty steeply up the hill.
5 is a dogleg right par 4, about 360 from the white tees.
6 is a beautiful hole. Tee off way up at the top of a hill, over a pond to the fairway which goes back up to the green. Its important to know the fairway slopes to the left pretty severely as well
7 is a long par 3 with a very shallow green. Tough par 3.
8 is a medium length par 4. Its straight away, but the green is well up on a hill.
9 is a short par 4 that doglegs to the left.
10 is a medium length par 4, with a creek on the right that cuts across the fairway about 100 yards out. You need to be on the right side of the fairway to have an angle to the hole.
11 is a medium length par 4 that doglegs left. Water left and right.
12 is a shorter par 3
13 is a long uphill par 4. The green is also very shallow.
14 is a roller coaster of a par 5. Up, down and back uphill again. Green again is very shallow. DO NOT GO LONG
15 is a really cool hole. Split fairway with a creek through the middle of the hole. The closer you are to the creek or more risky fairway sliver the better your angle to the green.
16 is a 180 yard par 3
17 is a uphill par 4
18 is a monster of a par 5. Second shot needs to be layed up about 125 from the green to be in the flat spot. Then played over a large pond, uphill to a shallow green.

Def worth a play, and if you are willing to pay online you can save about 5% on your cost.

Good Layout Average Conditions

I went back to River Oaks for the first time in a few years...simply bc the price level at most of the other courses in the area that I usually play was outrageous. If you are looking for a budget friendly round....this is a good option. The layout is awesome. I really enjoy the course. For the most part the fairways are relatively narrow with most holes having an angle to the fairway, or movement, or dogleg, usually to the left it seems. The greens are also relatively small with pretty severe slopes and humps. Nearly all of them are protected by bunkers and mounds and slope from back to front. There is a good mix on holes-long short etc.. and its fun to play. All that being said....the course conditions are just average. The course as a whole was extremely dry. There hasnt been alot of rain in the area lately and the course needs some. The fairways, tees, greens, and rough were all pretty burnt out. Also, we are in the weird season where the winter rye grass is dying out, but it hasnt been hot enough yet for the bermuda to come in good. Also, at least 3 holes where the yardage on the scorecard were not even close to accurate, so make sure to check. Hole 4, the card says was a 272 yard par 4. When we shot the distance to the 150 marker....it was over 190 to the marker.....so that changes the way you want to play this relatively tight hole. Also a par 3 on the back.......16 maybe...said 160 or so on the card....but we shot it at 197. So just check your distances. If you are looking for a top end course, this may not be your place.....but if you are looking for a budget friendly round on a cool layout that is fun to play and you dont mind these things then this is a good option

Great Layout.....Winter Conditions

Played Charleston National again this weekend when I was back in the area. It is an AWESOME layout. I really love the course and think the design is as good as it gets. Its basically built in the marsh, especially the last 5-6 holes. There are alot of forced carries, some of them of some pretty good length....The course is in typical winter conditions. The fairways and rough are dormant. The tees have been overseeded and are nice and bright green. Same thing for the greens, they have had some overseeding done, so they look really bright green. In my opinion though they rolled really really SLOOOOOWWWW. They were smooth, just couldnt get a putt to the hole.
#1 is a medium length dogleg left par 4, where the dogleg comes near the end of the fairway and takes the green back in to the marsh.
#2 is a par 3 with an all marsh carry to a not very deep green. Its wide, but not deep. Marsh in front and behind. Its about 125-135 yd shot.
#3 is a dogleg right par 4, shorter for this course, but unless you can get your drive up fast and high, its a three wood or less off the tee bc of the overhanging trees on the right.
#4 if a fun par 4. There are hills and a row of bunkers right, and a pond left. The pond sits right in front of and left of the green, with the only bail out to the right.
#5 is a straight away par 5, its pretty tight for a longer hole, and a big waster bunker on the left.
#6 is a shorter par 4.
#7 is a long par 3 with water in play on the right and front of the green. Really tough hole with the length
#8 is a long long long par 4, one of the longest I have played. Its 445 on the card. It moves left to right, and the green slopes severely back to front with a huge bowl in the front left.
#9 is a dogleg right par 5.
#10 is another long par 5
#11 another long straight away par 4, over 400 yds from the mens tee.
#12 a long par 5 with a sliver of marsh coming into play about 80 yds from the green.
#13 a long straight away par 4, again, over 400 yds.
Now you get to the fun holes, LOL
#14 is a par 3, all marsh carry, depending on tee and pin placement its between 125-150 yds.
#15 Is a quirky hole, with two marsh carries. Off the tee, you have to carry it around 180 yds to get to the fairway, about 90 yds our, you have another marsh and have another carry over the marsh to a narrow, really tight green.
#16 Over the marsh tight sharp log leg right, with more marsh around on the right of the hole.
#17 No marsh carry here unless you are playing from the back tees, just a long straight away par 4 of 400 yds.
#18 Par 3 over the marsh. It plays from around 135-150 depending on the tee and pin.

Great challenging layout

Prestwick is a great challenging layout. It will leave you thinking on every shot. No two holes are alike. The front 9 is very reminiscent of Dyes design at Harbour Town. Generally speaking the fairways are pretty tight. Not a lot of room to hit the ball. And they are several really long par 4s. There are also several pretty challenging forced carries. Holes that stood out to me are 3 which is a long straight par 4. But long to the tune of 440 yards from the white tees. And pretty tight. 5 was an interesting par 3 with water cutting from right to left in front of a big 3 tiered green. 9 is a beautiful left sweeping par 5. With water all down the left. 11 was a really cool hole with a carry over a big waste area. 12 is a shorter par 3. But it’s all carry over a pond to a very undulating green. 17 is one of the hardest par 5s around. It’s 500 yards. The fairway is pretty tight. And gets tighter as you go. There is water on the left of the fairways. And just short of the green it cuts across the hole and to the right of the green. And 18 is a beautifully done long par 4 with water all the way up the right. The entire back 9 is just outstanding.
The conditions are good. Fairways are in good shape. Tees are ok. The greens are dormant. So there are some spike marks later in the day. But they are generally very true and smooth and very fast! It’s a course that it helps to have played before (I shot a much better score this time than the first time I played here in October) If you are in the area it’s definitely worth a play if you want a challenging course.

Good Solid Value Golf

There are some reviews where this course gets a bad rap. But I love it. It’s good solid no frills golf. I paid $47 and that included 2 drinks a sandwich and chips. A small bag of range balls was $4. Now there are no thrills. The clubhouse is an old castle. But it could use some modernizations. There are no GPS, ball washers, or coolers on the cart. And the cart path is rough at times. But I love the course. I played on a really windy day. Probably a 3 club wind on the back. And pretty cool. So not real crowded. Finished in about 3 hours. It’s a links style course. Pretty open fairways. With a lot of bunkers and tricky greens. The course is in good shape. It was pretty wet in places. But the tees and fairways are nicely overseeded and green and in good shape. There were some bunkers that looked newly redone. And they had a lot of really really soft sand. And some that weren’t that had dirty looking gray sand and didn’t have enough sand in them. Luckily I only hit 1 bunker. Some reviews hammer the courses greens. And they are bent grass which can get really beat up in the summer. But I like them. In the winter the bent grass is thriving. They were smooth and really good speed in my opinion. Hole 1 is a long dogleg right par 5. 2 is a medium length uphill par 3. 3 is a longer dogleg right par 4 with an uphill approach. 4 is another medium length uphill par 3. 5 is a medium length slight dogleg left par 4. 6 is a little bit longer par 3. 7 is a long straight par 5. 8 is a trickier par 4. With the approach over a little creek. 9 is a shorter dogleg right par 4. 10 is a straight away par 4 but it was straight into the wind today. 11 is a solid par 5 where you have to decide whether to carry the creek on your second shot or not. 12 is a short par 3. 13 is a long tricky par 4 that moves to the right and uphill. 14 is a good par 5 where you have to navigate a creek again on the 2nd shot. 15 is a shorter par 4 that turns to the right. 16 is a long hard par 4. It moves slightly right. With a pond on the right. And it was straight into a 3 club wind. 17 is back downhill shorter par 3 with an island green. And 18 is another long uphill par 4 with a big pond on the right and the only big forced carry to the green. All in all it’s a fun course in good shape. And def worth a play!

Great Course

First let me say that the layout is outstanding! It’s a links type course with pretty open fairways. A lot of room to hit your ball and a lot of mounding on the sides that can help you ball stay in play-or kick it out of play depending on which side of the hill the ball hits. There are a good mix of long and shorts holes with par 4s ranging from 312-400 yards from the white tees. Also, each 9 has a long par 5 and a short par 5 which I enjoyed. There are few forced carries and not a ton of water in general. As I said though it is challenging. There is a lot of sand in play. And the green side bunkers are VERY soft and deep making it difficult to get out of. Add in it was very windy the day I played so it’s a tough challenge for anyone. As for conditions they were just average winter conditions. The fairways were still green and in good shape. The rough was in a semi dormant state that makes for inconsistent lies. The tees were in kind of the same shape. Some of them chewed up. My biggest complaint was the greens. They were totally dormant and brown. Now I will say they rolled very smooth and were really fast.....but when I pay over $80 for golf I expect greens to be green. If you’re not expecting a freeze in Florida fine I get it. But don’t charge 81 bucks to play on dormant greens. 50 would have been about right. I can get dormant greens at home in NC for 30 bucks. The pace of play was also really slow. I was paired with 2 guys who knew very little about golf etiquette and weren’t very good. They were also trying to play from the blue tees and they had no business being there. Couple this with a slow group in front and very crowded conditions and it made for an extremely long round and tough to get in a rhythm at all. This of course again was not necessarily the fault of the course. I have played here before both in the summer and winter when in the area and thought the course conditions and pace of play were great. I’d play here again I’m just a little miffed that I paid over 80 bucks to play on dead grass.

Always solid

Stopped in for a round on my way from Kiawah to Florida. This is one of my favorite courses anywhere. It’s always in good shape. Even when it’s crowded the pace of play is decent. The greens are great. Some of the smoothest I’ve ever played. And quick in a nice smooth way. I will say that the fairways had not been overseeded this year. Only painted which is a bit of a disappointment. However the layout is awesome. It won’t beat you up. But the short holes are some of the most challenging. If you’re in the area it’s the best deal for your money around.

Another great Kiawah course

Played Turtle Point today at Kiawah Island. I played as part of their golf or gourmet package where you get a round of golf and dinner credit for each nights stay. It’s a great off season deal-for $200 a night you can get a round of golf, $50 dinner credit and a 1 br condo. We did the same thing this time last year and I played Cougar Point and the Ocean Course. Turtle is probably my 3rd favorite out of those 3-the Ocean Course is iconic and Cougar Point is more player friendly-however, Turtle Point is still a really solid course. The tees and fairways were in great shape. The greens were good. But pretty slow I thought. The course is a good mix of short and long holes. There is a lot of water, however there aren’t many forced carries. Most of the water is on the side and offers a bailout. It seemed to me most of the water was on the left. And the bailout was to the right. But not every time. The greens were good. Not great. They were slow and had a lot of ball marks I thought. There are 3 holes right near the ocean. However Bc of the dunes you can’t actually see the ocean and that was disappointing especially if you’ve played The Ocean Course. But you can hear it. And it’s a beautiful course. The staff was really friendly and it’s a fun course to play. I couldn’t afford the full rack rate. But with the deal I got it’s a great option.

Great option

Heron Point is probably viewed as the 3rd of the Sea Pines Resort Courses. However, it is a very fun, challenging play. And the course is in really good shape. The fairways and tees were great and the greens were really smooth and quick. The course starts out with 3 pretty short par 4s to open with. It kinda gets your feeling good before the teeth of the course. After those 3 you face several doglegs. Longer par 4s. A couple par 3s with water carries. And the fairways remain pretty tight through the course. However, it’s a fun play. The only complaint you could make is that $130 is a lot to pay to play in late November. But it’s a high end course and in great shape.

Hilton Head National is a must play when. In the area. I get down a time or 2 a year and play there each time. It’s a great layout. A lot of fun. Not overly long or hard but great fun. And it’s always in really good shape. The greens are some of the best anywhere. Smooth and a great pace. And the price is much better than most of the courses on the island. Solid Course

Played Old South today for the first time and it will definitely get a replay from me. It’s a really good layout. A good mix of hard and easy holes. Straight and doglegs. Long and short. There are several forced carries over the marshland. And several holes with water in play. 7 and 16 come to mind. Both require a carry over a marsh to a sliver of a fairway with something less than driver. Then a hard dogleg and another significant marsh carry to the green. The course was in good shape. The greens a little slower than I imagined. But still good. The only complaint would be the tee boxes were chewed up on several holes and many of them weren’t flat. But all in all it’s a fun course, good condition, and so really nice views.

Beautiful Course

Cowans Ford is a beautiful private club. It is a great track. Sneaky hard with pretty wide tree lined fairways. There are few or no forced carries. But get in the wrong place and it’s really hard. The conditions are awesome. Fairways and tees in good shape. The greens are some of the best I’ve ever seen. They held shots really well. But rolled smooth and fast. I really enjoyed my round and thought it was a wonderful course. If you know a member and get a chance take it. There isn’t much else around that compares.

About the same as before

I had played and reviewed what I know as Waynesville Country Club back in August. Not much has changed since then after playing all 27 holes today. It’s not an overly long or challenging course. There are 3 9s. All 3 are pretty short-under 3000 yards from the back tees. And all 3 are par 35. Generally speaking there is a lot of room to hit your ball and the greens are small. There are some approaches that get pretty tight.

First the good.....the layout is really enjoyable to play. The surrounding areas have beautiful views. The fairways and rough are generally good. And maybe the best part of the course are the greens. Firm and roll really good and at a good pace. I played all 27 holes in just over 4 hours on a Sunday.

The bad-both times I played recently were the mornings after a heavy rain. So the course was really wet. However both times there was some residual wetness that was there before the rain it appeared. These areas in the rough and some fairways were a mess and hadn’t been mowed in a long time. The tees were hit and miss. Some good. Some thin or bare. Some needed cutting. And some all 3 things on 1 tee.

Overall it’s a great layout and fun to play. And the greens really make it worth it. I’m not sure it’s a $55 course. So the value isn’t great. But if you’re in the area play there and you’ll enjoy it.

Tough Challenge

Played Prestwick today after having it recommended a couple of times. It was a very tough course. Maybe the toughest I’ve ever played. And I’ve played the Ocean Course at Kiawah (granted the day I played the wind was light) and Harbour Town. The greens are extremely firm and fast. Most are also very large and Dye-abolical. Lol. Seriously there is a lots of swales and movements in the green. There is some room out there to hit the ball. But if you hit it in the wrong place you’re done. You have to be on the correct part of the course. Many fairways are either built up with low areas around them or built between two sets of rolling mounds. It’s long, and it was wet so it played long. There are several forced carries. Many deep nasty bunkers around the greens as well as mounding. Plenty of water to find. It was a beautiful day and it was fun to play even though it wasn’t going to be a good score. That being said I don’t layer Farmstead the day before and thought it was in better shape for $23 less. Don’t take it the wrong way. Prestwick is not a bad course. But little things were off that I don’t expect if I’m paying between $80 and $100 like they charge. First almost all the tees were chewed up. Second, many fairways were wet but worse the rains had washed dead grass clippings into huge piles and they hadn’t been removed or blown off. Last the bunkers were almost unplayable. They hadn’t been raked since it rained last. And I had been there two days and hadn’t seen any rain. These things $100 courses don’t do. It’s a great course. Great fun. And a great layout. But if it’s gonna be a $100 course I’d like to see these things fixed.

VERY solid Play

Have played Farmstead many times. Absolutely great layout. It’s Faux links and pretty wide open. However if you hit it in the wrong place or in the traps you are in trouble. Greens are also very difficult to read. The pace of play is a little slow-a little over 4.5 hours but the course is in great shape. The rough is very penal in some areas Bc it is so thick. The greens are awesome and the fairways were great other than being a little wet.
The finishing hole is a par 6 that stretches into two states. And it’s a cool finishing hole. I made a par on it for maybe the first time today. I got my round for $59 on Golfnow and recommend using Golfnow Bc the course website advertises a rate of $95 currently.

Great Fun

Played here back in February before Covid and left a little disappointed. I said in my review that I thought the layout was great but the conditions left some to be desired and I’d like to play it again when the grass was green. I did so today and it was a good round and a lot of fun. First at check in I was given the local rate. This saved about $30. Second the course was in decent shape. Everything pretty green. And in pretty good shape except the bunkers. They were not in good shape. And hadn’t been raked since it rained Friday night. I was surprised at how dry the rest of the course was after heavy rain Friday. Most of the tees were in good shape. Fairways were mostly green with only a few bad spots. Greens were smooth and fast and again only a few bad spots. I was partnered up with a local and we had a great time playing together. The course is pretty challenging. It’s basically built in the marsh. So it’s always there. The fairways are relatively wide. But if you miss them it’s gone in the marsh. In spots the marsh creeps in closer. And there are several forced carries. Every par 3 had a forced carry over a marsh except maybe one. And a couple other holes had forced carries. On the back a hole or two had multiple forced carries on the same hole. So it’s not easy. But the surroundings are beautiful and the layout is fun. All in all it’s worth a play especially at a reduced rate.

Great Layout

I make it out to River Falls about once a year. I make the drive down because it is one of the best layouts anywhere around my house. Every hole is different and no two holes set side by side. It is also one of the most difficult courses around. There are no easy holes, and no easy shots. You have to focus make shots every single hole. That being said, its really fun to play. To be honest up front, it had rained pretty much all day the day before I played, which caused the course to be wet. This is not the courses fault, but it still kept me from giving the review 4 stars. The greens were in good shape. Maybe 2 of them had some bad areas on them but they were not in play. They rolled smooth, were maybe a little on the slow side but again it rained alot the day before. The fairways were in great shape. Very nice. The bunkers were almost unplayable. But again, heavy rain the day before. Most tee boxes were in good shape, except the par 3s. They were pretty chewed up. Overall, course was in good shape. The course starts with an uphill dogleg left mid length par 4, one of the simpler holes on the course. #2 is a longer straight away par 4. #3 is a long downhill par 3 that I think is really hard to hit the green. #4 is a big wide par 5. Plenty of room off the tee. Then an approach to a smallish green with bunkers and water left and a huge hill to the right and back. 5 is a long narrow downhill par 4. I think this hole is extremely hard. But I can never hit the fairway. 6 is a very short par 3-about 100 yards but the green is surrounded by trouble. 7 the tee shot goes downhill to the bottom with a pond slicing the hole in half. It requires something besides a driver unless you think you can carry the pond-I cant. I hit 6 off the tee and had about 150 in. The approach is steeply uphill to a long narrow green. 8 is a really difficult hole. A waste area creeps in from the left the further you go down the fairway, so probably not a hole to hit driver. At the 100 yd mark the fairway is probably less that 10 yds wide. The approach then must cross the marsh area to get to a green that is not very deep. 9 is a par 5 with an uphill tee shot to.a fairway that runs perpendicular to the tee box. The green is fronted by more marshy waste area. I think 10 is a hard hole. Its a long narrow par 4 with an elevated green. 11 is a medium length par 3, without too much trouble. 12 is a par 5, that plays downhill to a fairway that narrows as it goes. There is.a creek and a ravine to the front and left of the green. Anything that misses left is gone. Anything that misses right is on a steep hill. I would probably call 13 the signature hole. It is a short par 4 from an extremely elevated tee that overlooks the Tyger River beside the green. 14 is a hard dogleg left uphill par 4. Very deep green here, so you need to get your yardage correct. 15 is a medium length par 3 to an elevated green. Avoid the right side miss and you'll be fine. 16 is a downhill par 4. The approach is extremely tight and downhill. There is no room to miss the green (like alot of the holes here). The ball is gone to the right and there is a rock wall to the left. 17 is a mid length par 4. Your tee shot needs to be out to the right side of the fairway or the trees on the left will block you out. Very very deep green with 3 distinct tiers. 18 is a long par 5. Pretty tight drive with a small pond in front of the green. Overall, its a very challenging fun course. Thats a treat to play. It COULD be a GREAT course with just a little more TLC. (PS areas of the cart part are being replaced and you have to drive around them)

Love this Course

Boone Golf Club is one of my favorites rounds anywhere. If I lived closer I could play it every weekend. I made it up the mountain for the second time in the last month this summer and came away even more impressed than a few weeks ago. The course was in great shape. Even though it rained pretty substantially the day before the course played great with few wet areas. The greens are some of the best I’ve ever seen. They are smooth and quick. I really enjoyed putting on them. The layout is fun and challenging at times. And the surroundings are beautiful. Just don’t expect a quick round. They pack this place out on the weekends and you should expect anywhere from a 4 to 5 hour round. Depending on how early or late you tee off.

Could be great

Grew up in Waynesville, and moved away about 20 years ago. Played at what I knew as the Waynesville Country Club on Saturday. We played the Dogwood and Blue Ridge 9s. First, the course is pretty short. We played from the blue tees and each 9 is still under 3000 yards. Granted, it has been 20 years but the course was not as top notch as I remember from my youth. But it could still be great with just a little more TLC. First, the surrounding area and the views around the course are beautiful. The course plays up and down about 3 different coves. Second, the course layout is outstanding and really fun to play. Several nice elevation changes, several doglegs, and a good mix of tight and open holes. I really enjoyed the layout, and it was fun to play. The greens were in great shape. They rolled really good, and after it dried out some rolled at a nice speed. However, I noticed that little things were off. It seemed to me the fairways and some tees had not been cut recently. Also, the course was really yet. It rained really hard the night before so I get that. But there were some areas in the rough that looked like they had not been cut in weeks due to being too wet. The cartpaths and holes signs all seemed old and needed a little work. Overall, its a nice course and a great layout. It could be a GREAT course with just a little more money and TLC. That being said, I'd play it again in a heartbeat. But I dont feel like its a great value at $55.
