A Gem close to the airport

Scheduled a 4some here for our last day in Orlando. Needed to be near the airport for our afternoon flights and this was perfect. After playing 4 rounds elsewhere, I can say this was every bit as good at more expensive courses. The day was in the 80s and the course was in perfect shape.

An RTJ design,. A LOT of water to navigate around, but manageable. Grees were generally fast but not always consistent.from hole to hole.

Well worth playing.

Nice recovery

I have played this course for than 10 years and always considered it one of my favorites in the OC area. Over that last few I have noticed conditions degrade. One consequence has been easier tee time access and lower course fees.

Last year I came with a group and War Admiral was closed for some reason and we played Man-o-War which is the second course at Glen Riddle. It is also a terrific layout, but conditions were as bad as I have ever played. and I was told that War Admiral was in worse shape.

With little play due to the pandemic, I decided to give WA a try and what a pleasant surprise. It was in great shape. Not tournament conditions but shade of its former self.

I will come back

What a pleasant surprise

I booked my round here honestly only because other courses I normally play were doing aeration and there views were very encouraging . IT is a little farther .than I normally am willing to travel but itw as worth it.

Course conditions were surprisingly excellent including bunkers which I find many of these shore courses skimp on. Greens were in great shape and rolled nicely.

IT is a very good layout and worth the time to play My only complaint is that like most of these shore courses, they cheat on tee placement, moving them FORWARD by as much as 50 yds. This is a very annoying practice and insulting to golfers who pick tees based on the distance they want to play

A terrific Fall treat

I play this course a lot and today I played it in an outing. It was a beautiful day, breezy and sunny conditions. Wonderful views of the bay from many holes make it worth the trip.

The course was not uniformly in good shape but overall not bad. The back nine has more troubled turf conditions. They would do well to consider an aggressive tree removal strategy, especially on holes 9 -12. Leave them open to the bay and wind and they will sparkle. This was done on holes 3-4 with good results. More aggressive chemical use to combat adverse conditions would also help.

The greens were a gem and like the better OC courses rolled nicely. Not too fast but true. Prices have dropped here (and everywhere) and I fear that the declining golf rounds are putting too much pressure on course and greens are taking a hit. Several others have experienced this and I hope this does not. It is still one of my favorites, but I will be watching for improvements.

Nicely improved

Played here in an outing (something I didn't realize they did). Beautiful layout along the bay with a nice Scottish feel (expect for the lush rough). The day was very windy and it rained for 15 minutes, but still a terrific day.

Played the white tees as that's what the group had us play. Blue would be better since even on the whites they did what a lot of these courses do - move the tees forward a little.

Greens were very smooth and rolled true, not really fast. Bunkers in good shape and fairways in excellent condition. Overall much better than when I played here a couple of years ago. Can't say that for most of the other OC courses.

What I don't understand is how this course even from the Blue tees is rated so low! Blue has a rating and slope of 70.4/118 for 6500 yds. White at just over 6000 is 68.3/113!! That's the average for all courses in the US. That cant be. This course is much harder than that. Closer to 130 even from the whites. They need to re-rate this.

What a shock

I played this in an outing today and have played it more than a dozen times over the past 5 years, and have to say this course has significantly deteriorated. The back 9 had greens that didn't appear to have been cut in a few days. Many of the traps were unracked and compacted with past rain. dead spots were everywhere greens, fairways and tees).

I don't know what happened, but can say this is a pattern I have seen here over the past 1-2 years. It would be a shame to see this terrific design go to waste. When it was in good condition it is a joy to play. Tough but fair. Today it looked like River Run, a nearby Player course that has gone below muni!

I gave it a low rating for value because whatever we paid to play in the outing was too much given the conditions. They need to save the Ruth's Chris coupon and put the money into the course. Until I know these conditions have been fixed I will not play there again.

Nice warm up course

I play Bear Trap Dunes several time a year. On this day it was 2 days after a violent thunderstorm and heavy downpour. Whiel it was cart path only, I was impressed that course conditions were good. Greens were expectedly slower than normal and soft.

Today I played Grizzly/Kodiak (there are 27 holes). Kodiak is the weakest 9 and when I made the turn from Grizzly, it was backed up and insufferably slow. When I asked if I could play Black bear which had NO one on the tee, the staff said no. I felt this was arbitrary and only irritated me.

This is a links style course with a good layout. Today they moved the tees forward which I find annoying but a common practice on resort courses. I played from the listed distances for the blue tees (6300 yds) otherwise I would have dropped at least 500 yds off.

I also noticed that Troon (who manages the course) has let many of the more out of play bunkers go to seed and as a result it gave the course a tired and poorly maintained look.

Still a worthwhile course to have an enjoyable round.

Spectacular

What a gem. This is a 2 course complex (North and South) managed by Troon. The North course in actually mostly in a valley and carved through the lava flows and trees. Beautiful views of the ocean and the lava fields.

This was a windy day and it made some shots very difficult. Lot of sand and taller trees to contend with. All well placed.

Course conditions couldn't have been better. Well watered and maintained fairways, tees and greens. The greens were wonderful. Firm but could hold a long shot in.

Play both courses. We actually changed to play both twice.

Great potential

Played this on our second day in Hawaii and what a surprise. Wonderful layout with grass defined fairways. fairways were firm so you got a good roll, but this was partly because of less watering. Manageable elevation changes with ample fairways. Miss them and it was punishing due to the tall native grasses.

Greens rolled nicely and were well maintained. I believe this is a Palmer design and with a bit more maintenance it could be a gem. The cost is an estimate as it was part of a 2 round package with Mauna Kea. Definitely worth including in a gold week.

I got what I expected

I knew going in that this course was not in good shape, but that it a decent layout. I was staying at Mystic Dunes so it made it easy and convenient to go. There was a lot of development going on around the course so travel from hole to hole was obviously a temporary challenge. In fact hole 9 was closed for the day.

As others reviewed, the fairways have very poor grass. This is due to fungus (black patches) and poor cutting. Munis are better maintained. The greens and surrounds on the other hand were decent and this plus the an ok layout made it a good day away from the pool.

There are a lot of golf courses in the Orlando area and many near Mystic Dunes. Don't know if their owners are up to the challenge of getting this into worthy shape.

It was cheap, convenient and I had time. Nice restaurant .

What a surpise

Our group played the Old Links course as our second of the day and last of our trip. Honestly we were expecting a tired and ordinary tract to finish our trip playing it as a scramble. Were we surprised. Unlike the Glashedy course this has moguls running down every fairway which push balls in every direction.

The greens were in excellent shape and large for what we had come to expect from this old links courses. The whole complex is situated in an ocean of grasses and moss. I didn't see a tree or even a bush anywhere near play.

Getting to Ballyliffin is a hike but well worthwhile. Plan to play both courses. You wont be disappointed.

Why this is an Open caliber course

Wow, one look over the layout from the road as you pas by shows why this course is included in the Open rotation. The Dunluce course (yes there are two) has a broad sweep moving back and forth between duned areas to moguled valley holes. There is ample room for a large gallery to watch, something that Royal County Downs, a far tougher course does not have.

Our group took forecaddies and glad we did as knowledge of lines and distances with even the mild elevation changes was of real help. RCD has many completely blind shots while RPR is more subtle but requires long accurate shots over deep fescue and dune grasses on many holes. A perfect example is #5 (White Rocks) , a modest length par 4 that goes slightly downhill then turns sharply right and back up hill. The carry from the white tees is over 200 yards and coming up short will likely result in a big number if you find the ball.

Unlike many of the Irish links courses that tend to divide the two nines between the high dunes along the coast and the low areas leading up to the dunes, RPR mixes both nicely and makes for a more continuous look and challenging round through out the 18.

The course is getting ready for the Open in 2019 and you could see a lot of activity but this never detracted from our play. There is a decent range and practice facility and a nice club house with upstairs patio to enjoy afterwards. Thee is a quaint little halfway house in the middle that you should make sure to visit.

This is definitely a bucket list course and I am looking forward to a return.

Disappointment

With Royal Portrush we looked to this course based on reviews as one of our top targets in our group's trip to N Ireland golf. Of all the courses this was our biggest disappointment. The opening hole provided a spectacular view of the course and coastline and we were optimistic about a greta experience.

Immediately we discovered that the green's conditions were terrible because they had very recently been aerated. We should have known this because they were punching the practice green while we were teeing off. This made putting a real challenge. To me that is unconscionable to have done at the high of the season.

To make matters worse the fairways were pretty dried out giving the course an almost desert like feel. I noticed few if any sprinklers in the fairways and our caddy told us they hand water all the fairways! It was clear that the course was in need of more aggressive maintenance.

That said there were certainly some marvelous holes including the finishing holes that seemed to be in better shape.

With other very good courses in the area, if one needed to cull a course from the program, I would pick this one.

Brace yourself

We could not have picked a better day to play. Had an earlt tee time and it was clear it was going to be a busy day. The opening hole is the best I have seen on any course. It was a dew covered modest par 5 that snakes along the bluffs overlooking the coast. This and every hole was impeccably manicured so that fairway shots were rewarded with pure firm lies.

The course has too many blind shots that without a caddy to guide you would be a nightmare. Of particular note would be #9 with its discontinuous and shifted fairway. A straight shot down the middle of the fairway would put you into the deep heather and Gorse on the other side of the dune. Our caddy climbed the dune and near the top told up to hit it over his head and be sure to carry 200 yds. This barely got us to the fairway on the other side. There were several hole that had shifted fairways and narrow landing areas on the other side of an elevated carry (# 2, 3, 6, 11, 13 and 15).

These blind shots are the only negative I had for the course. Unless you play it several times it is too hard to understand what you are facing and failing to hit the fairway can be really punishing.

The views throughout the course were spectacular and often made it hard to stay focused on your game. The course is a stunning sweep of rough land that has been meticulously carved to form imaginative and challenging holes. The only hole that I found ordinary and well out of character for the course is 17 - a 400 yd downhill par 4 with an odd triangular pond in the middle.

The pro shop was very nice and as would be expected from a course of this caliber, well stocked with quality goods. The club house was very nice and the lunch we had afterwards was perfect. Our caddy however seemed to be going through the motions and showed limited interest in our group. He was probably the least engaged of those we used on our trip.

Without question this is deserving of it's #1 rating in the world. RCD is a breathtaking and demanding a course as I have played and look forward to doing it again.

What a pleasant surprise

County Louth was a fill in to bridge our groups trip between Dublin and The courses in N Ireland. We wanted to play Royal County Down and needed another course to get us into the area and selected CL for this.

What a pleasant surprise as this was a very demanding and nice lead into what would be much harder courses. Like so many links style courses this also split the holes between the tough dunes areas and the flatter grounds away from the coast.

Make no mistake the dunes are very demanding and the layout seemed to channel more balls into fairway bunkers than other courses so you need to watch your line.

While there were a few goofy holes (3 in particular), the course provided a good test of accuracy off the tee. Failing this as you entered the dune areas was punishing. The greens were very undulating on many holes but in very good shape

All in all a good course that our group enjoyed and an excellent fill in for the start of the harder courses up north

An overlooked gem

Our group of 12 golfers played here to fill in the start of our trip. We started in Dublin to play the Portmarnock championship course and included this before we went north. What a pleasant surprise. Langer's revamp of the Jamisen private course was well worth playing. The course was not as well maintained as the other courses we played, but it more than adequate for our group. Like we discovered during our trip at other licks courses, the corse's teeth show when you move towards the sea and into the duns. The demands on shot accuracy were considerable but fair. This was a tough opening for us but a perfect fit adjacent to the Portmarnock hotel.

A timeless beauty

I have now played this course 4 times and each time it has been more enjoyable than the last. This is a classic links course and host to more Irish Opens (29) than any other course in Ireland, yet many people don't know if it.

Located on the tip of a peninsula jutting out into the Irish sea the course can have some wicked wind, but this round was played in only a light breeze. In classic design for these courses, the hazards are the bunkers. The fairways are generous and even the fescue is quite manageable to hit from, but the roll of the fairways maliciously guides balls to bunkers that almost eliminate a forward shot. You either go sideways, backwards or humiliate yourself by trying to hit anything other than a fat lob wedge forward. Green side bunkers are black holes, sucking in any ball into the that rolls by too casually.

The holes by the sea are gems and extremely demanding. The Blue nine (there are 3 nines) has the best protected greens of the three especially those in the light dunes areas. The course is long, but the firm fairways can make even a weekend duffer feel like John Daly with the incredible roll you get.

The Red nine was the most punishing with several raised and crowned greens. Missing them even slightly puts you in a difficult spot to try to chip up from. Also beware of the small water holes that dot the course. They are quite steep and each has a quaint life saving ring mounted on a post to help anyone who might fall in.

A wonderful old club house is the anchor view throughout the round. Don't miss the seafood chowder. It is the specialty of the club

Labor day at Baywood Greens

we played this course over Labor Day weekend. We were told there were 300 golfers scheduled for that day. overall this is a beautiful course and well laid out. The course had recently been aerated and greens still showed the effect of the aeration holes as they were bumpy and slow. The club should reconsider their aeration schedule given the high level of play expected over Labor Day. It is unfortunate that they would does not have an alternate set of tees between white and black. The length difference is over 400 yards between the two they do have alternate Tees between white and green.

It is disappointing the club has not opened up the 3rd 9 built across route 24. This is a beautiful links-style 9 and has been under construction for more than 5 years. Overall I would rate Baywood as one of the better courses in southern Delaware.

A shadow of its former self

This was one of the first courses I played 12 years ago in the Ocean City area. Back then it was in good shape and a difficult test from the blue tees. This trme I just wanted to see how it aged and decided to play the yellow tees that were listed at ~6100 yds.

This was a mistakebecause like mnay courses in resort areas, they moved the tees up and only 3 of 18 holes were they at the published length. At one hole (#3 ) a 500 yd par 5 they were up so far the hole measured <400yds!.

The greens were is poor shape even after the reseeding earlier in the year from damage (fungus?). None were adequately cut. Equally bad were the fairways with many wet areas that appeared to be from leaky sprinklers.

A disappointment to a see a Gary Player course this bad.
