Up and coming course

This course is being repaired and restored so there were some areas where this was apparent. The staff were so friendly and if you want there is a steakhouse and casino for after the round. I enjoyed the round and the drive to the course was breathtaking. It was an excellent value.

Great recovery

Played two years ago and grass was gone on the fairways, but wow they are back in terrific condition!
They are doing a LOT to rebuild it. GPS system was great. Scenery is unbeatable and if this course was in Scottsdale you would pay hundreds. It plays really long but fairways are really wide in most cases.

We have been laying sod (250,000sf) for the past two months. Unfortunately, that means we must water more than normal. We reduced our green fees 50% to compensate for the inconvenience. We have now completed our sod project, aerated our greens and are starting to dry out the course. We anticipate the results will be worth the summer inconvenience.

So much potential

They have switched the nines so you tee of now on the old #10 (scorecards have been updated, guidebook has not). We played the day after they re-opened the front nine after a big re-sodding project and unfortunately it rained on us for those front 9. Which, when combined with the already thoroughly soaked new sod, made for for one mushy and ugly 1st nine holes. Then the rain stopped and the sun came out for the back 9 and it was truly glorious as the 2nd nine was in mostly great shape with wonderful tight, firm fairways and a continuation of the great bent-grass greens. If a company like Troon or OB had been managing this course all these years, it would be a perennial top 5 course in the state due to the incredible views, near total privacy, eerie quiet, beautifully rolling greens and a very cool layout (and the 10 minute tee times are nice!!). But it just is not there yet and probably has a ways to go.

If you get bored of all the courses in the PHX area and want to try something new like we did, it's still probably worth the 1' 20" drive from the Mesa area and the $30 rate is sweet as well. But in the summer, I just can't justify nearly 3 hours of driving when a perfect course(s) like We-Ko-Pa are only a 20 minute drive away.

My wife and I will definitely return when the course has dried out and the sod is fully grown in. I hope that the course can continue to fix it's many conditioning flaws although I'm not sure how they will fund it based upon $30 rates and very minimal play.

Add it to your "must play" list but watch these Golf Now reviews for conditioning updates. Good luck

Working on it

I love Apache and enjoy going there as often as I can. However, right now they are working on the course and it's in tough shape. I think in the very near future it will be in great shape.

Thank you for your understanding. Our front nine is scheduled to reopen on Sep 4. Our driving range is scheduled to reopen on Sep 26. We will be aerating on Sep 8 (Front) and 10 (back). We have laid 250,000 sf of sod on fairways and roughs this summer. Working hard to make Apache Stronghold better!

Always good value

Have played this course many times. It is always a challenge, but a pleasure. They had obviously had severe heat in the early summer, as some of the fairways had recently had new sod planted. Also they had recently had flooding, as many of the arroyos showed damage. But the cart paths had been graded back into good shape. They are always very courteous and friendly. Great vistas, no buildings on the course, lots of vertical changes provide an overall great golf experience.

Thanks for your comments. We have laid 250,000 square feet of sod this summer as part of our four year Master Plan to return the course to its former status as one of the premier courses in Arizona. We are 2 1/2 years into our Master Plan and hope you will return often to watch our improvement as we go forward.

Worth Playing

Overall course was in fair shape and playable. The layout has some very nice scenery and the pace of play is awesome. Greens are bent grass and very playable with most greens being of a fairly large size and having some tricky undulations. They are in process of repairing some fairways and the are spots where sod has been replaced. This has required them to water quite a bit and some spots on the course are soggy. That being said there are some spots in fairways that mowers couldnt mow due to soft conditions. So some very thick grass in fairway. You will have to take some free drops. Tee boxes are fine but could be manicured a little better. Bunkers were thin but not hard and needed some tlc as well as grass was growing over the edges down into them. Again it is a hazard so try to avoid them. The fairways for most holes are very generous, but if you miss one desert is very primitive and you may have difficulty playing out. Its a great place to go if you have some time for the drive and your not too serious about your play that day. Go play it and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere its worth it. P.S. cart paths are all dirt and your bag gets quite dirty, you might want to cover it with something.

Thank you for understanding! We are doing our best to minimize the renovation disruptions and believe the summer inconveniences will be worth the wait. We also understand that due to manpower constraints some of the other areas have not gotten the TLC they deserve while we are undergoing this renovation. As compensation, we have dropped our green fees. We anticipate our renovation efforts for this season will conclude with our semi-annual greens renovation in September and that we will have a much improved product going forward. Please come back as watch as we continue to improve.

Great layout, poor tee to green course conditions

This course is about 7miles from Globe, Az., behind a Casino.

The layout and secenery are very, very good !

Most of the greens are good, but some have areas where grass is not growing.

The real issues are the fairways and the bunkers.

The fairways have lots of bumps and the rough is very high. Lots of soft areas (wet/muddy) in the fairways. Poor sprinkler drainage most likly.

The bunkers are the worst part of the course. They look like no one is even trying to maintain them. Lots of desert grass and bushes exist in most of them. They should all be considered "ground under disrepair".

Play this course if you are in the area and get a good internet or promo price by staying at the Casino.

It is "fun to play" !!

No beverage cart but the course provided coolers with free bottled water in ice on about every 3rd hole. Nice touch !

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We are in the process of laying 250,000 square feet of sod in our fairways and roughs. Because of our altitude (3600 ft) our growing season is shorter than in the valley and we have had to put all our resources into this project in order to give the sod time to put down a good root system prior to going dormant in mid-October. This has led to less maintenance than usual in some of our other areas (bunkers in particular). Be assured, this is not our norm and those problems will be rectified as we complete our sod renovation and have more manpower available. We strongly believe this renovation will be worth the summer inconvenience and hope you return often to see our improvement.

Too wet

No way it rained that much! Over watering! Standing water turns a good shot in middle of fairway into a bad shot! The grass around greens to long. Too soft for mowers to get on course. Greens had mud and wet grass clumps from mowers left behind.

We are aware that some fairways are very wet and have grass longer than normal. As stated on our signage at the check-in desk, this is due to the grow-in of our new sod. We are trying to complete the project as rapidly as possible and ask for your forebearance. As our signage says, we anticipate completion of the project by mid-August. Until that time there will be some fairways with poor conditions. We have reduced our green fees during this period to compensate.

Place needs a lot of work

We are a foursome that have driven from Chandler, AZ up to Globe at least twice a month to play here for over a year. We have watched this course go downhill each month, but love the layout and challenging holes. This last time, we arrived about 45 min, early for our 9:45 tee time. There were no golfers waiting to tee off, but we were told by the gal at the desk that we were early and had to wait the 45 min. While we were waiting, no one showed up to tee off and the guy out at the bag stand just rolled his eyes and couldn't believe that she was treating us like that. At 9:35, I went in and asked her if we could head out and she told me that we still ad eight minutes left and that she would call us when we were up. At 9:45, I went in to her again and as I walked up to the desk, she told us were were up next and that we could head out to the tee box. Like I said before, we have driven 85 miles one way to golf here about twice a month, but we all agreed that after this last time, you have lost our business.

I'm sorry you had such a poor experience. Our agreement with Golf Now provides them tee times in exchange for their services. Without getting too deeply into the technicalities, when you book one of the deeply discounted tee times you are paying Golf Now, not the course, and the agreement states you must tee off at the booked time. That is why you weren't allowed to tee off early. If you would like a more in-depth explanation feel free to contact me.

Save your money

This course has great views, a friendly staff and what could be a great lay out. The greens where in great shape, the fairways a disgrace. They are replacing sod, over watering fairways and then not cutting the fairways.

This course should be closed until the fairway rehab program is complete....until then save your money and travel time.

We anticipate completing our fairway re-sodding project by mid-August. Until then, we will try to make it as non-disruptive as possible; however, conditions on some holes will not be pristine. Please bear with us as we strive to once again become one of the premier golf courses in Arizona.

Muddy mess tall fairways on 1-9

The employees are friendly and helpful. The first 9 holes of the course are a mud bog. Over watering due to course repairs and monsoon rain storms are the reason for the mud.

Thank you for taking the time to review. We will cut back the watering as soon as the newly installed sod has rooted. Once we cut back the watering we will, again, allow carts off the cart paths. Less water should also reduce the number of bees because that is what they are after.

If you want an enjoyable day on the course go here...

This course can be real tough from the Blue and Black tees, or you can go Yellow and White for challenging to easy. The layout uses the natural terrain so you have to use some fades and some draws to hit the green. The blind fairway landing are fun. It is always fun to try and cut over some of the hills if you have a big drive.

We are in the process of laying sod on the bare spots in the fairways. We expect this project to continue throughout the summer season. While the entire course will remain open there will be holes that will be "no carts" until the sod roots. We will try to keep this disruption to a minimum. Please bear with us

Horrible just plain horrible

We drove from Phienix (about 98 miles) and when we approached the golf course and saw the little practice range or it could have been a hole, we should have turned around and left. Thank goodness our golf now rate was $22 per person. This course was just plain horrible, absolutely horrible. The fairways, if that's what you want to call them were so full of potholes, mud, standing water and the little grass that covered them were weed filled and mostly bare. The cart paths were non existent and one needed a 4wheeler to climb up and down the crooked, very steep and slanted rocks. We couldn't tell which hole we were on because the rock markings had different numbers on them versus the hole you were on. If we were on hole #2, the rock said #12. We thought we missed a turn on the treacherous drive to get to #2 and ended up on the back nine! This place isn't a golf course and should be taken off anything that refers it to a course. We quit after 8 holes because it just wasn't worth our time to finish. The facilities were dirty when we arrived at around 8:00 am. We drove to the Casino and saw only a few people inside. Left promptly and drove back to Phoenix.

nice drive from phoenix to golf course

The staff were all very friendly. The course is definitely different. The fairways are like pastures and it is very difficult on many holes to determine where to aim. Very dificult to identify fairway from rough. Fairways were damp and muddy in many spots. The greens were very large and reasonably nice to putt on. Many were very soft with some topsoil showing. Almost looked like the worm holes you get on manitoba coureses. The course was empty so no pace of play issues. Need to use gps to help find next hole because the trails are poorly maked. The scenery was very nice which made playing it worth the 10 bucks we paid to play.

Because of our elevation (3600ft) the course is just beginning to emerge from winter dormancy. While the grass is greening up, the soil temps are not yet high enough for growth. This means there is little difference in height between the fairways and the roughs. As soon as the soil temps are high enough to encourage growth we will be sodding all the rough spots in the fairways. I assume from your post you are a winter visitor and although you state you don't recommend this course I would encourage you to give it another chance when you return next year. I think you will see dramatic improvement.
