Better than ever
Course is in fantastic shape and is one of the best in Arizona
No Shade At All
Very, very nice course. Challenging but fair. My only issue was the expensive price ($90) with very little shade at tee boxes and greens.
Extremely hard course.
Great course in very nice shape. Incredibly hard golf course.....especially of tees. Have to play it a few times to know where to hit it. Course is great though. Just look at scorecard and know the tips are over 7300 yards....it's a long course so choose tees appropriately.
Awesome course
Definitely one of the best public courses during the summer as far as conditions.
Must play
This course is an incredible design with 106 bunkers. You have to lay up in spots and play smart. Will definitely return here!
First timer won't be the last time.
Very friendly staff. Everyone was helpful. GPS on all the carts. Bottled water every 3 holes. I started about 10:40 at 103 degrees. Finished 4 1/2 hours later at 115. Greens were excellent. Some of the traps need attention (very hard or crusty). There are numerous dry spots around the course but what do you expect in 100+ temps for several weeks. The course is mowed well and they are keeping it up during the summer.
Fantastic Golf Course
It has been years since I played Southern Dunes. I was so looking forward to my round. I was not disappointed. Great job to all Southern Dunes course workers. The fairways, bunkers, greens and tee off boxes are in magnificent shape considering how hot it is here.
Slow pace of play
My tee time was 6:24 am and unfortunately I still had to wait on every tee box to hit with the weather being very hot. I thought it would be a 3-1/2 to 4 hour round at the most and it was 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Easily Top 5 AZ Course
People crack me up on this app. They expect PGA Tour conditions in the heat of summer in AZ for a course that’s under charging under $70. This course is one of my favorites in the phoenix area. Layout is amazing and challenging. It also plays pretty long (7500 from the tips) which I love. I’ve played all the popular courses in AZ (Quintero, Troon North, Boulders, Wickenburg, Keirland, We-Ko-Pa, etc.) and this easily a Top 5 course. No complaints from me.
Not worth the drive
Absolutely terrible customer service! I played and left a club there. When I called the next day, the guy in the pro shop described the club perfectly to me and said it was there. A few days later, I drove the THREE HOUR round trip to go pick it up just for them to tell me they didn’t have it anymore. Instead of trying to do anything to make it right all the the guy said was “I don’t know what to do other than say I empathize with your unfortunate situation.” With customer service like that, Doubt I’ll make that trip again.
Did not meet expectation
First time playing this track after all these years. Pretty rough for a Troon course. Bunkers were shaky.. What sand some had wasn't much and others were packed dirt, weeds and rock. The 2 we were paired with just dropped out of the traps. Fairways were okay, greens were inconsistent, some fairly bumpy. Not a good time for an hour drive.
Hidden gem
One of my top 3 courses in Arizona. Live 5 minutes away so I play at Southern Dunes a lot . Greens recently plugged but still run smooth. Worth the drive! One of the best layouts in Arizona. Everyone on the staff is wonderful. Exceptional restaurant! 6am tee time - 3 hr 20 minute round! Priceless
You better know how to hit a sandwedge
Challenging layout! Bunker beware! They ate big & everywhere! I must say for a course that is routinely in the top 5 in the state. I'd expect the summer conditions to be better
Great as always
Have lived here since 1993, been playing South Dunes since it opened, one of my favorite tracks. I t has never disappointed me
Good track
Course is full of many bunkers and can play long if you use any of the back tees. Layout is very good, with friendly staff. Greens rolled well and were very undulating and can be fast. If you don’t get into any bunkers it would be a miracle! Bunkers in fairways were thin and hard (but that can be good or bad depending on how close you are to the lip) Green side bunkers for the most part have more loose sand. Love the course and layout. Long drive from Goodyear, but worth it.
Great Course, But...
Anyone who has ever played Southern Dunes knows what a great course this is. Of course, SD is one of those "super over-priced" tracks during the peak season, but that's
par for the course...pun intended. However, in the summer months, the mere mortals who can afford to play for a fraction of what the course normally fetches, have a chance to play one fo the better courses in the area. I love this course...I feel that it's one of the best in the state. But one gripe I have is, many of the bunkers (which is one of the selling points of the course) are not good. I understand that maintaining bunkers is usually one of the most expensive elements associated with any course maintenance program. But when you consider the amount of money changing hands to play this course, one would expect properly maintained bunking. I would make one suggesting to those preparing to play this course any time soon...practice putting out of bunkers...you'll have more success than trying to hit a "traditional" bunker shot out of the majority of these "traps". My humble suggesting to the maintenance and management crew at the SD...put some of the money you make from this course back into the bunkers. It's the right thing to do.
Smooth, fast greens
Currently the course is in solid shape. Of particular note was the fast smooth running greens and the sand traps. I don’t know what the speed of the greens were but they were significantly faster then what I’ve been playing in the valley. The sand traps were also adequately full and consistent, which unfortunately has become a rarity.
4:15 pace. Friendly staff. Nice bar to have a beer after.
Lone complaint might be that no beverage cart on the course. We teed off at almost 2:00 with very few golfers on the course so I also get it….plenty of bottled water through out the course though.
