never disappoints
i have played this course a few times over the past 30 years and it never disappoints. i've played in a few charitable tournaments and a few times just regular play. The course is always difficult, beautiful scenery and backdrop, friendly and worthy of the price.
GREENS
The Greens on the back 9 are horrible. Very dry and patchy with sand piles. Spend the extra money and play Lakemonte because even with the discounted rate I still paid to much. The course is laid out nicely and plays very long.
Nice RTJ layout
Course layout was challenging and fun. Greens were good speed but several need repair. For the second weekend in a row I was frustrated by the beverage cart service who only showed up at the very beginning of the back nine and were never seen again (last week it was that they showed up finally on 17). For someone in the industry it’s lost revenue. In the end, it’s a good value in a challenging market. I will definitely return.
OVERPRICED
This course is NOT worth even close to what they're charging!!
There are bare patches all over the place; the tee boxes & greens are pretty rough. Also be aware that you have to pay an extra $20 just to get in the park, making your $100 tee time actually $120. If you're going to pay this much go to Bears Best, Lanier or play twice somewhere else. This used to be nice for say $60 but nowhere near $100.
Not Worth the Money
I visited Stone Mountain a few years back and thought it would be great to play golf there. After we booked a lake house for the week at Lake Lenier I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to play there. The round cost almost $100/person, which we were all ok with until we got there. First we had to pay $20 just to enter the park. The clubhouse and the pro shop staff and cart attendants were very nice and welcoming. We were informed by the starter that there was no beverage cart service. There were no water coolers on the course either and Lakemont’s layout does not take you by the clubhouse after 9. Again, no water coolers on the course. After our round we went to the clubhouse bar to get a drink, I personally didn’t have an issue, but others in the group did. They ordered drinks with Buffalo Trace, but the bartender used a different liquor and said “that’s how I make it”. When this was brought to her attention she said “are y’all going to make me pour all these drinks out?”. I guess I am spoiled, I live in the Myrtle Beach area, when I spend $90-100 for a round of golf I expect more. Simple things like a beverage cart, water coolers, GPS on the cart, and good service at the bar. I would never recommend this course to anyone.
Bad Value
The course was in pretty rough shape. Many of the fairways included areas where there was no grass and an okay tee shot would leave you hitting off sand and rock. Greens were incredibly slow and several included dead patches. No water coolers available on the course which wasn't brought up at the pro shop. There is a sign for a snack bar at the turn but speaking to someone who worked there it sounds like that snack bar hasn't been there/functional for years. Overall, I would play this course again at a ~$45 price point, but the quality and amenities expected for an $80-$100 round simply did not exist
Pace of play
Hate to be this guy whining about pace of play but this was the most outrageous scene I’ve ever witnessed.
Booked 11AM tee time as a single. Was told at the first tee that the guys who booked the two other 11AM slots (who I’d never met) were late, and I would have to wait for them.
Starter sent out three groups in front of me, each with at least one open slot.
Finally tee’d off at 11:30.
Proceeded to wait on every single tee box and did not finish until 5:00 - 5.5 hour round.
Beautiful course course with a great layout that you couldn’t pay me to play again.
Expensive -- not worth value
Course was in good condition, greens were very nice. But paying over $100/round is not worth it at this course. Plenty of great golf courses in/around Atlanta that are in the $60-$80 range that I would play instead. Slow pace of play on weekends too, easily a 4.5hr+ round
Can’t beat the views
Blown away by the scenery of this course. It’s was pricey and maybe not in the most immaculate condition for the price but wouldn’t change the trip ! Pace of play was super great for a busy Saturday
Decent Track But Overpriced
Overall a good course but not worth the $100 they ask for tee times. You also have to pay a $20 park entry fee. Some of the greens had some bald spots on them.
Slow slow play.
4:45 minutes even after we played thru one hole on the back. Miserable.
Slowest Round
Nice course but no marshals out there which makes for unbearable slow round. Lots of hackers on the course with no golf etiquette. Marshalls could resolve that.
Fair overall at best
Great staff, beautiful scenery and great course layout but definitely not worth the high rates and long wait times at each tee box. Conditions should be much better if they’re charging that much, and pace of play should be monitored a lot better. We waited at each tee box a minimum of 10-15 minutes before we could even tee off. Our round ended up taking 5 hours and that’s without stopping at all after the first 9 holes. Played here a couple years ago and the course was in great shape and we didn’t get slowed down on any hole. Must be new ownership or something.. Hopefully improvements are soon to come.
