Pebble Beach on a Lake

Let me start of by saying Harbor Links at Sagamore Resort is a special design. P.B. Dye outdid himself when he laid out this track.

The greens are fairly big and have lots of hills and tiers. Starting with the 2nd hole, there are many dramatic views. The 2nd hole is an elevated tee shot that give you the option to hit as little as a 175 yard shot, all the way up to trying to drive the green. The tee shot goes over a huge crater.

The course is filled with what I termed micro-bunkers. Very small well placed bunkers that had nice sand as of yesterday. Making the bunkers more penal is the fact that the course lets the native grasses grow knee high around the edges of many of the bunkers. On the 18th hole I had to his out sideways from a fairway bunker because my ball was simply too close to the native grass.

The 4th and 5th holes are unusual back-to-back par 5's. The 4th has a fairway break and a huge drop off. Directly in front of the elevated green is a circular grass bunker with knee high fescue. The 5th is a dogleg right par 5 that provides the first clear view of Brookville Lake behind the green.

The 6th is a par 3 that is the equivalent of a Pebble Beach hole but on a lake instead of the Pacific Ocean. If you miss it right, you are in Brookville Lake.

The 7th is an island fairway with water on both sides and water surrounding the green except for in front.

Many of the greens are surrounded by shaved chipping areas which give the golfer the option to putt, chip, flop or hit any type of shot you prefer.

The 11th is reminiscent of the 9th at Shaker Run (or the inverse of the 18th at TPC Sawgrass at you prefer.) The hole is short giving you a choice off the tee. However, if you miss right you are in Brookville Lake. If you miss left you are in fairway bunkers. The green has water in front and on the right so hitting a fairway bunker shot to a half island green will be challenging for most golfers without my skill set.

14th is another gem of a hole that requires a precise tee shot in the range of 175-225 yards. If you are fortunate enough to find the fairway, the green has the nastiest false front I've ever seen. There is a creek to the left of the green, and the entire width of the green is about as wide as a big dining room table. A great short par 4 requiring two precise shots to find the green.

16th is a part three downhill with the lake in the background and a half hidden pin if on the left side of the green as it was yesterday.

17th is another short par 4 that is well protected by water all the way up the left side and a series of micro bunkers green side right and short that make placement, not power, the important element on the tee shot.

Overall, lots of choices off the tee, not penal for guys who don't hit the ball far and plenty of challenge on and around the greens.

Worth the drive

Bit of a drive so only go once or twice a year. Course layout is challenging but fair. Greens are very severe and can run very fast at times. Only complaint is that the flag position on the green is identified with the little flag on the flag pole. You've all seen this. The little flag is in the wrong place and you think you're hitting to a front pin and it turns out to be back. How tough can it be to use red, white and blue like most courses or hand out a pin position sheet.

Sleeper

Second year going on a golf trip here. As last year we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Stayed at Sagamore Resort Condo, Ainsley's Cafe has very good food and the views can't be beat anywhere else in this region imo.

The course....a challenge for us regular golfers from the Blue tees....from the White tees it's only moderately easier because the hardest part of the course is the greens. Many raised with trouble around for wayward shots and fast with pin placements making 3 putts more common than usual. The tall grass (2 ft+) around fairway bunkers and along many holes is fairly punishing and requires penalty strokes because of lost balls or unplayable lies. If you're a 15-25 handicap, you'll play closer to 3-5 strokes higher here imo. if you're having an off day plan on losing half a dozen balls or more lol. Although you'll find a few too as you look for yours.

Other than being more challenging for the average golfer it's a great course and was in great shape. A true diamond in the area imo and we'll be going back for years to come. Some beautiful holes along the lake and with lake views. A very good find I wished we'd known about 20 yrs ago.

NICE Course

My husband has always admired this course for many years. Finally, our schedules allowed us time to play the course. We thoroughly enjoyed this course and will definitely be back. It's very well manicured. The grounds keeper was very attentive to our space. We liked the challenges it gave us and loved the layout. Looking forward to going back with family.

Great variation in this Pete Dye layout

Played in an outing on June 2-4. Played 36 Friday, Saturday and 18 Sunday. Shot my best round Sunday. Course food is very good. Greens could've been a little softer. Stayed at the condos and ate at the restaurant - all excellent.

Great Course, Great Views, Tough Greens

This is not a beginner's course. It is a beautiful course with great views of the lake. Anything off the fairway can quickly turn into trouble. Many of the greens are elevated. Anything around the green can also turn into trouble. The greens are fast but very consistent. There were no surprises when putting. It will test your focus on all 18 holes.

The staff was great and friendly.

Pace of play could be a problem on this course as the long grass off the rough lets you look and hope to find your ball. Also the difficult greens mean more shots around the green and more putts.

Good course, unfriendly staff.

This is the second time I've golfed here (both times being Hot Deals) and both times the staff has been less than friendly. They make is clear to you that they make no money on the "Hot Deals". It's almost like they want you to feel guilty. It's well over an hour drive and I expected a little more friendliness upon arrival. If they feel this negative about "Hot Deal" patrons, they should opt out of GolfNow.

I like the course itself. Some

Not going back

Decided to try the course since it was highlighted on my daily golfnow email. Drove an hour and was paired up with a threesome from Muncie. Course was pretty much empty and we made our way around in about 4 hours and 20 minutes.
My Issue is with the guy working the counter in the pro shop (asst. pro?). There was a two some that was playing as 2 singles behind us (one in a cart). They were pretty fast and we offered several times for them to play through. They declined and said they were fine with the pace and enjoying the day. Unknown to us, there was a single (riding with his 20something daughter) behind them that was upset about the pace. She called the pro shop and complained. The pro (?) came out to the 16th tee and told us to wait for the two groups behind us to play through. The twosome behind us apologized and again said they had no issue. They told us the girl with the single was angry and was on the phone quite a bit. We waited on the tee for 15-20 minutes as the two groups played through. Totally derailed our round. Needless to say, the course didn't handle this correctly. Pair the two groups as a 3 some, or have them jump ahead. I won't be back. Too many courses closer to home that are better managed and more player friendly.

Thanks for your review, James. We're very sorry to hear about this experience and the delay you had to endure. As a general rule, foursomes and larger groups have priority on the course so we do apologize for this breakdown of our policy and procedure. If you enjoyed the course otherwise, we hope that you would consider giving it another try again in the future.

Picturesque course with a great lay out.

The course conditions were the best of any of the several courses I have played in SE Indiana this year. The clubhouse was well appointed and staff was friendly. This course has a great lay out with many risk-reward holes that can be very challenging, or you can lay up and play it safe! Beautiful course that I would highly recommend, definitely worth the drive if you're not from the area.

Great layout

Awesome course with a lot of challenges. Back tees make for a long but scorable round. Bring some extra balls because you'll probably lose a few if you aren't straight off the tee.

PGA tour type greens

Tee to green was normal from the first forward tees. Beautiful course with the lake and native grasses. The greens will eat your lunch if you are not on the right level or putting well. Had a good time. Will play it again soon.

Great Layout

Great layout with many holes overlooking Brookville Lake. Plenty of opportunities to score, if you're patient. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in perfect condition (a surprise for late August). I am looking forward to a return trip this Fall.

My only complaint was there were no water jugs anywhere on the course. That made the 90F+ temps even less bearable.

A singular experience for Greater Cincinnati

If your definition of Greater Cincinnati extends to Franklin County, Ind. (and technically I think that is considered part of the metroplex), there's no other course I'm aware of that gives you the change-up in character that Harbor Links delivers. Routed along the eastern shoreline of Brookville Lake, the location puts it next to a large enough body of water that you actually get the localized weather issues such as local varying winds based on air exchange between the warmer land the and the cooler lake surface. Now we're not talking Whistling Straits-level impacts here, but it is completely unique among all courses I can think of in this area. About a third of the holes are on the waterfront, and P.B. Dye got his money's worth in using that real estate to interject both strategy and variety into the layout. When you start to get to this point in the summer a lot of golfers are looking for something different to change things up, and Harbor Links totally fits that bill. As an addendum, as others have mentioned, the restaurant across the harbor has a real resort feel and is an excellent choice for rounding out a true change-of-pace day from the summer doldrums.

Great set up

This course is a challenging layout that is very scenic. Even the holes away from the lake offer some great views. The gentlemen in the pro shop was great, got me in and out in front of a larger group allowing me to finish up under 3 hours. Most of the greens were recently mowed and rolled very true. The greens are tough though. Only knock on the course was the cart paths but it really doesn't bother me at all.
