About The Inn at Perry Cabin

Getting to the Inn at Perry Cabin located on the Eastern Shores can be part of the fun if you choose to “skip the bridge”. Guests can boat across Chesapeake Bay aboard Five Star, a 55-foot yacht that is the resort’s flagship. The 90-minute adventure is the perfect way to start and end a luxurious getaway. The 78-room inn dates back more than two centuries with cozy rooms and narrow, winding hallways. Its golf course – an old Roy Dye design rejuvenated by brother Pete Dye – is actually the final effort of the legendary architect. The course is walkable with a caddie corps ready to navigate its travails. The final three holes are dubbed the “Goodnight kiss” – to “remain in the golfer’s mind long after the round is over,” Dye said, just like a goodnight kiss on the first date. A sailing academy, fitness center, wine tastings, a spa and more await.

We were welcomed by a very friendly staff and a top of the line indoor driving range which was perfect for a chilly day. The head pro, John, got us set up on the simulators and told us about the course. The front nine was a very fun but also challenging layout. Back 9 was also very fun, 16 17 18 were fantastic closing holes where you know you’re on a Pete Dye course. Fairways were in great shape. Greens were also in very good shape and rolling very fast.

It was a beautiful day to play golf, it was windy at times but manageable. The greens were rolling smooth and fast. I was told about the "goodnight kiss" previously and it definitely stood up to its name! I'll be thinking about that horrible shot I made on 17 for awhile! Out of all the Pete Dye courses I've played, this course was golfer friendly and required many different shots. My girlfriend who is very new to golf had a blast. Can't wait to return next season.

Wow

First impressions are wow, very nice place. Driving into the place you can see It is well taken care of. Pro shop was great! Set me up for a warm up on the simulator ( no driving range yet) and hooked me up with some beers in my golf cart cooler! Plus1! Carts were in great shape and sanatized with a letter from the club. Now the course..... hard, fair, challenging, rewarding. Loved it. I have never seen grass cutters and greens keepers hide in the woods until you were done playing the hole and have teed off on the next hole. Amazing! I will be back. Thank you to the staff and course personnel for your professionalism and dedication to the players!

A gem. Greens are “Dye-abolical”!

Club house is non descript yet fits the area and course. Very clean. Great staff. I will not address the Covid-19 measures but they were great and the review is about golf. The conditions were amazing. The greens were as expected, fast, undulating and pins were in places you had to be smart to be in the right spot for any chance at a par putt. All of the greens were a challenge. Hard as a rock yet receptive, if that makes sense. The course weaves around a residential area. Most holes you really pay more attention to the course, and the scenery than the surroundings. All of the holes were pleasing to the eye off of the tee, to me and fit my game. Hole 1 eases you into the round and it continues to lure you in as you play on. The first par 5 is #6 and it is the only one on the front 9. Seems mundane until you reach the green. Hint: Be in the right spot or it is a 3 putt lol. Hole 7 was under repair but still playable. You can see areas around the entire 18 that have been affected by the extra rain this year. They have done a yeoman’s job keeping it to a minimum. Unlike a lot of the Dye courses I have played, there are only a few blind shots and the deceptive distance perspectives means use your yardage book, laser or cart to verify what your eyes see. The final 3 holes are definitely Dye at his best. 16 is a drivable par 4 from the White tees and water is in play if you can bomb it. Be smart. Hole #17 looks a lot like TPC Sawgrass. The final hole #18 is a risk reward finishing hole for sure. A forced carry let’s you chew off as much of the corner as you want. Wind in your face or across from the bay will help you make your choice wisely. Once in the fairway you need to figure out what level the pin is on and hope you are on it with your approach. If not? Only about 8-10 feet of difference if you aren’t perfect. The course plays fairly short from the White/Back tees. I played white in day 1 and backed up on day 2. I preferred the extra length and actually shot better from the Blue tees. I played 18 holes on both days, in a cart, cart path only in 3 hours. Not in a hurry. Enjoyed the challenge. The greens were the most impressive. Fast. Pure. Overall an amazing, enjoyable and not too mentally taxing course to play. I will be back. I would say it is a must play.

Veterans State Golf Championship

VGA Maryland was lucky to host the State Championship at this BEAUITFUL course. My wife, not a golfer or even likes it, drove/dropped me off was even at awe when pulling up. To see the course with mist under little sunlight. The water across the street glistening from the moon.
The staff I meet once I pulled in were VERY helpful in making sure I got to the correct cart, they took my bag for me, and showed me everything I needed to know. After going into the clubhouse I walked outside and took some photos just being in awe of the scenery looking out #1 and #18. They have 5 Adirondack Chairs overlooking those holes. It really was picturesque.
I went back inside to use one of many bays they have for warming up. They didn't have a driving range but had state of the art simulators. Myself it is hard to warm in a bay as I feel confined. I feel the same way when getting fitted for clubs.
I studied the course layout for three days to get ready for shot placements etc. Going through the course it was pretty spot on, couple differences, but mostly spot on.
The course unfortunately received over 34 inches of rain with the month, starting in September. They did their best to rectify that issue and did as well as they could. The course was in good shape consider. Thank you to the superintendent and the crew.
The Goodnight Kiss is a GREAT last three holes that one will never forget. They are pretty reminiscent of TPC Sawgrass. I have always been a HUGE Dye fan and this didn't disappoint. I really hope to get a chance to play there once again.
Thanks to Bob, VGA, and staff of Links at Perry Cabin for an amazing and enjoyable event.

Thank you
Buzz

Honest review.

The staff were great. The course was in great shape. Two things I found unappealing. First no driving range. Hitting into a net just doesn't do it for me. Second is the long grasses around the sand traps. The greens are already tough, Hitting a good bunker shot to try and save par is tough enough for me. Then to add the long grasses that you cannot hit a decent shot from if your life depended on it is crazy. But I guess it was the same for us all. Just don't hit your ball there. Still a great course though.

Beautiful Gem

We had the honor of The Links at Perry Cabin hosting our Veterans Golfers Association State Championship. John and Mackenzy were and absolute pleasurer to work with. Everyone at the course were accommodating,, helpful, and polite. If you want a challenge this is the place for you.. They work tirelessly to maintain the course and keep it in the best condition at all times. The resort is absolutely beautiful, a true romantic getaway, adding this to your bucket list is highly recommended.

VGA MD State Championship

Played this course with the. Veterans Golf Associations Maryland State Championship, and loved every minute of it. The staff were incredibly nice, helpful and accommodating to us, and the course was in excellent shape. Loved the indoor simulators they have instead of a driving range. Would love to play this course again.

Conditions were poor

Had great expectations that were not met.
After 30 inches of rain in last 60 days, the course was in poor shape. For $195 per player, it was a money grab.
Someone should have explained the conditions or given us a discount.
Course had some nice holes; some were throwaways stuffed into the real estate.
As a villa owner at Casa de Campo, with 108 Pete Dye holes, this was not up to his level of excellence
This is a strong pass.

Highly Satisfied

I've played most courses on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and this course was hands down one of the most enjoyable. I was impressed with the condition of the course after receiving 1.5 inches of rain the day before. The course held up great and made for a great day.

The conditions were less than satisfactory

The greens were ok, a lot of them were sandy and beat up. The tee boxes were decent. That fairways were horrible, a lot of sand and dirt spots through the course. It was not worth the price we paid to play. There was no driving range to warm up on, only hitting bays indoors. The staff was great. Will play again to see if the course is in better shape.

Mr Dye is turning in his Grave

I was informed of a member for a day through VSGA magazine. Read the reviews in the magazine and told my self I had to play this course. Was excited for about 2 months to play and was willing to travel 2.5 hours to get there. Initially a course such as this should have a outdoor driving range facility which it did not. You have a virtual driving range indoor but would've been nice to see how you were hitting in the slightly windy conditions of that day. Ok not a real issue. They did have a chipping and putting green and was in good shape but relatively small and would not accommodate more than 5 people at a time. Service of the staff was good, friendly and helpful. We get to the first tee and noticed our carts were not allowed at 90 degrees, this was not disclosed by the pro shop which was a disappointment. Not a big deal as the weather was gorgeous and walking on a day like this was not an issue. After the first two to three holes it went down hill, the conditions of the course were horrendous. Most of the fairways had not grass and they had the huge aerated plugs all over the place. Typcially hitting in the fairway is a reward, on these holes it was a detriment to your game. No even lies, plugs and mud all over the place, not grass does not sound like a reward when hitting in the fairway. Then you get to the greens and the and they were just as bad, with many bald spots and no consistency to the greens. Sand bunkers were plenty and while I was only in one, most from what I could tell were not maintained properly. My foursome ended up paying $135/pp and it felt like we all threw our money away. We did not enjoy the day and were extremely disappointed. To get this course back into the shape it deserves will take almost a year plus. I do not recommend this course and now understand why they were promoting member for a day. Do yourself a favor and do not take advantage of this deal, you will be extemely disappointed. Spending $135/pp you expect plush fairways, mainted greens and bunkers, and that is not what we received. For one of his last golf courses completed, the condition of the course is not doing him justice. Stay away.

Thank you for your review Houman033, we are sorry you played at a time when we were experiencing conditions that were not up to our usual standards. As you can see from previous reviews, your experience was not indicative of a typical one at Links at Perry Cabin, but August and September were difficult months for bent grass due to above average rainfall from several tropical systems and very high temperatures. We were addressing/have addressed the situation since you played. We'd love the opportunity to further discuss your experience and the opportunity for you to see the course again now that conditions have improved. Please give us a call at the golf shop and we'd love to talk further. 410.745.5183

Dye's "Goodnight Kiss" on Eastern Shore

Was lucky enough to play with one of the few members over Memorial Day Weekend. Having driven past the course numerous times before, during, and post redesign I was extremely curious to see how they took the old 'Harbortowne' course and brought it back to life.

If you've played more than a couple Dye courses many of his classic design cues are on full display here. Railroad ties, water, volcano bunkers, long bunkers, bunkers that seemingly serve no purpose....the works.

With at least an entire year to grow in, the course was in very good condition. Since all the greens were rebuilt, they were extremely firm. So, was constantly playing short of the yardage number hoping the roll-out wouldn't go through the green (still happened a few times).

The course doesn't yet have a driving range, though supposedly they secured some land they needed along with some permits to ensure houses don't get hit. Instead, the new clubhouse had 8 state-of-the-art simulators to get warmed up.

The last 3 holes, dubbed the "Goodnight Kiss", are the "signature" holes. 16 is a short par 4 with a pimple of a volcano bunker in the middle of the fairway. Playing short of it you'll have a blind shot to the green. So, you have to pick one side of the fairway and hope to hit it as the green juts into a pond. The 17th is almost a carbon copy of the 17th at Sawgrass. Enough said. The 18th is a mirrored version of the 18th at Sawgrass or Pebble Beach.

All in all a nice course, and certainly the best on the Eastern Shore.

A fitting sendoff for a legendary figure

Pete Dye will go down as one of the greatest and most influential golf course architects of all time. And while the Links at Perry Cabin, his final design, may not be in quite the same conversation as his most famous works, it is nevertheless a lovely, fond farewell that members and visitors will enjoy.

Laid out over the routing of a previously underwhelming design, the Links wanders out in a big loop from the site of its future clubhouse, with holes in both meadow and forest settings. The transitions are smooth, making the golfer feel transported, rather than dragged, from one environment to another. Rough growing conditions in 2018 set the course back somewhat with its conditioning, but both the expertise and the budget should have it in impeccable shape in 2019 and beyond.

The course has all the major Dye signifiers - pot bunkers, visual trickery and a general mischievous air - but it also sports some of Dye's boldest greens, including the final one, a massive two-tiered stunner. It caps off the course's - and Dye's - "Goodnight Kiss" to his fans.
