Black Lake Conference Center
About Black Lake Conference Center
Not everybody realizes that the Black Lake Conference Center - also known as the Walter and May Reuther UAW Family Education Center owned by the United Auto Workers - is open to the general public. It was built in the 1970s on roughly 1,000 acres of remote, idyllic property in northern Michigan. Accommodations range from 228 rooms in the Lodge to a selection of condos, apartments and camp sites. With a massive auditorium, Black Lake is perfect for conferences, retreats, weddings, family vacations and reunions. Rees Jones added the award-winning Black Lake Golf Club in 2000. Other recreation includes exploring the surrounding forests hiking and biking or fishing in Burt Lake, Mullett Lake or its namesake Black Lake, teeming with walleye, bass and perch.Facts

Tough but beautiful
Beautiful course, fairways, layout (although we could not find 17), very narrow, lots of trees; bring a lot of balls and hit em straight!
Poor pace of play
Loved the course and conditions. Fantastic and worth the drive. However I will never be back due to the horrible pace of play. Had a nice crowd that day but our round took 5.5 hours. Ranger told us on hole 4 that group 2 up from us was out of position but he did nothing about it and that was the last we saw him. When we got in they said they heard from others that the pace of play was bad but claimed they were busy so what could they do. Horrible pace of play for such a beautiful course. Don'the say you weren't warned.
Happy golfer
This course is a great track. Challengingredients yet fair. The staff was extremely friendly. Would play any chance I have.Lowell
This course has nice layout
Liked course layout fairways and greens in great shape played long lots of elevation
Pristine course conditions in isolated area and we'll worth drive
Course was 50 mile drive from my lodging in boyne falls and we'll worth hour drive. Greens and fairways and rough extremely well maintained.
Great Northern Michigan Golf Facility
If you get anywhere near Indian River during the summer, this course is a must for those who enjoy a beautiful wooded nature setting with long holes and challenging hole positions. It was a ride through the forest for us with a surprise around every corner. The clubhouse had great food and the staff was extremely pleasant.
Five stars for a new golfer looking to test modest skills. Must hit 'em straight!
Great Northern Michigan Golf Course
This is a beautiful golf course that is in excellent shape and a challenge to play. If you are playing the courses in the Northern part of Michigan this is a must play. The staff is extremely friendly and the food and beverages in the clubhouse are top notch. They know how to take care of their golfers. We have had a group outing here now for several years and it is the highlight of our trip. You will not be disappointed if you decide to play at Black Lake.
A hidden gem
Rees Jones - we knew that we're going to find a real good treat when we booked that course.
For a bargain of just $29 on golfnow.com we booked ourselves for a round on the course. If you're looking for a beautiful design in a quite surrounding - there you go. It's quite peaful at the black lake an it's fun playing the course.
We played it on a drizzling day but the course was in quite well condition. For sure it's nothing compared to e.g. Forest Dunes but it's certainly a course you want to consider when being in the area. It's around 45 minutes north of Gaylord. Staff was friendly and helpful.
This course has great views
Beautiful golf course. Very very plush. Could not ask for any more in a golf course. Will be back to play again and again. This in my opinion is in the top 10 courses in the state. Also you wont find a better burger anywhere, and I mean anywhere.
Course Review
I would definitely recommend this course. The pace of play on the front was fine even with a group of 25 in front of us..... Then the wheels fell off and it took 2 hours to play 10-15 but the rangers did jump in and sped things up.
Great Day!
Arrived for my Tee time a bit early, checked in and went to the starter who said I was free to go off but there were a number of groups out ahead. He said he would check to see if I could go off the back and make the turn when tee times were slow. He got me out there and I only had to wait on one group and they allowed me to play through. Great Course, great weather, great Day. Hats off to the staff. Treat yourself to a good experience and play Black Lake.
Nice place
Golfed here on Friday.....perfect spring day in the north.
We made a last minute call to try golfing here instead of another place.....found a great rate, and booked it. Unfortunately there was a mixup, and we booked Saturday instead of Friday. The manager was very kind to allow us to go on Friday instead, and we had a great time.
Course layout is typical style for N Mich woods course....each hole stands on it's own, and you hardly see another golfer. Fairways are generous, and well placed bunkers along the fairway reward well placed shots, but give you something to think about before you just step up and crush one.
Did I say there were bunkers? Yes, nicely bunker-ed layout, and the sand condition was great, so no hard baked mud to hit out of.
Definitely give this a shot if you are in the area.
One of the best
I've played the course many times, and it's one of the two best up here. Great layout and good variety of holes.
Play a top course
We play as a couple all the courses in Northern Michigan and this is our favorite. It is the best bite for the buck!
Don't miss it as part of your golf experience.
An excellent day!
I've played this course before which is exactly why I keep going back. It is an amazingly beautiful course. Fair yet challenging course. Very friendly staff. Clubhouse is beautiful inside and out. If you consider yourself a golfer then you will be glad you played here.
everything
great we enjoyed it all. I want to play it again and again
A not so great experience
No bag person available to load bags. Had to search and then got reluctant help. Grueling 4 hour 45 minute round. No ranger. No beverage cart. Lots of bugs.
Hidden Gem
This is not the first time I have played Black Lake nor will it be the last. This course is ALWAYS in impeccable condition. I brought a group of 20+ guys there. They all loved the course. It suits golfers of all levels with the different tees. You must make the drive to play this course. Group golfer generally runs a promotion in October for this course for $44!! If you don't mind the trip, you have to play this course! The greens putt very true, and the tees and fairways are perfect.
Nice
The course was nice. We encountered some black nats on the course which was a little annoying. The course was in great condition. The starter was very friendly! For the most part enjoyed our day!
Very long round
Great course in good condition. The layout is pretty tight with many uphill and downhill shots. Greens were great.
Bad- the round took 5:28. We called the clubhouse as there were 4 groups on the 5th hole. Ranger said pace of play was on time. Waited 5 minutes on very hole from there on. Ruined the whole round.
