Forest Dunes
About Forest Dunes
Forest Dunes had a rocky start two decades ago, but under owner Lew Thompson has shot to the top of the heap among Michigan's golf resorts. The construction of the Lake AuSable Lodge and The Loop, the ground-breaking reversible course by Tom Doak, has added a stay-and-play component that was never available in the past beyond Tom Weiskopf's excellent original design. With the return of a Hilltop putting course in 2018 (previously dormant for a decade) and the new 10-hole executive course by Riley Johns and Keith Rhebb debuting in 2020, Forest Dunes continues to raise the bar.Facts

Immaculate course beautiful layout
This course is hands down my favorite course in Northern Michigan. It's Design is challenging but fair the course has always been an immaculate condition this time I played it and the staff there are great and really take care of you I highly recommend this course to anyone was looking for a nice round of golf
Best conditioned course I've played
This course is great because of the conditioning more than anything else. Greens are fast but roll true (no bumps no old ball marks). Fairways are cut short, I'd say too short though, as the average player doesn't play off that tight of a lie normally. They did provide lots of roll though. GPS on the carts were great, the units give you exact yardage to the pins, so we ended up not needing our rangefinders. One exception though, we'd have all four wheels on the cart path and repeatedly got "please stay on the cart path" warnings. Annoying. The tee times are spread every 10 minutes I believe, and the starter keeps things going but not rushed. They put a lot of money in this course and it shows. Very nice experience.
Fantastic course. Great staff. New Tour Edge pro line rental clubs
We arrived at the course without clubs. FedEx isn't the most reliable shipping company. We were provided with a brand new set of Tour Edge pro line clubs complete with Hybrids. They also gave us a half dozen Taylor-Made Penta golf balls as part of the rental deal.
The course was pristine. Best conditioned course out of the five courses we played. We played the front tees and found the course to be challenging but now impossible. It was a fun day with lots of great opportunities to succeed. I will go back and play this course at every opportunity.
Feel like a Pro.....play this course!
Perfect condition. The front nine is Augusta and the back nine is Pine Valley, hence the name, Forest Dunes. I have played this course many times and always enjoy the experience. Warning, you need to study each putt from all angles. Generous and tight fairways, big, pretty, perfect bunkers with large, very fast greens.
Best Conditioned Public in U.S.
This is by far the best conditioned public golf course I've played (I've played Pebble Beach 2x, Ocean course at Kiwah x 5, TPC Sawgrass x 6 and condition at forest dunes is better). Condition rivals some of the best private courses in the nation. Fairways are as good as some of the other public course's greens. You can putt from their fairway. Layout could use little more undulation but with the speed of the greens, it probably would have made it impossible to play. Greens are one of the fastest I've played. Its running between 12.5 and 13.5 on typical day. To put that in perspective, average PGA tourney has green speed of 11.5 on stimp meter. If you can handle the speed of the green, this is very fun course and you feel like you're playing in a PGA event.
Great track
The only negative thing about this course is the small gnats that are constantly buzzing about. They give you bug spray to deal with it though. Great course-very challenging - highly recommended.
