About Shanty Creek
The 5,000 acres of Shanty Creek Resorts are spread among three villages - Cedar River, Schuss and Summit, each with at least one golf course, restaurant and accommodations galore. The Summit is arguably home base with the Lakeview Lodge housing the Lakeview Restaurant, the spa and the Legend and Summit golf courses. The resort added the Hawk's Eye course and accommodations across the street in 2021.Facts

Left a bad taste
The day started out great, we were greeted promptly as we arrived. The gentleman who took our clubs helped my wife check in, very pleasant experience. The course was not crowded, felt like we had it to ourselves. Very good course conditions. Upon completion of our round we drove to the bag drop area. There was a young man practicing his chipping behind the registration booth and a young woman seated in the booth playing on her cell phone. Neither acknowledged us I unloaded our cart, put the clubs in the car and left. Put a bad taste in our mouths after a perfect day. What ever you pay those two is too much.
Great Shape - older design
I've probably played Schuss at least 20 plus times. It had been a couple of years since my last play. In very good shape, has a range to warm up on and you still check in at an aging wood frame proshop with a halfway house in the basement. The front nine has little elevation change and the back has quite a bit. Way too many dog leg left holes(eight of them) several of them quite severe. If you can't draw the golf ball off the tee or hit a fade you'll have extremely long approaches and probably a pretty frustrating day. Greens are quick fast and smooth. It's an interesting course to say the least. A tad under 4 stars but worth a play....if you stay at Shanty you should absolutely play Cedar River, Hawk's Eye and I'd put Schuss in a tie with Legend at this time. For a late afternoon extra 18 the original Summit course is a good value. While Legend might have a better design Schuss is more quirky, interesting and doesn't have really stupid bumpy cart paths like the Legend..
Best shape in years!!
Shanty Creek's purchase of Hawk's Eye the grounds keeping and overall conditioning have improved significantly. Best I've seen in several years and I've been playing this course since in opened at least every other year. You do have to play here a couple of times to score on it....it's tricked up/tight in some areas and there are some sneaky elevation changes/blind shots where it's difficult to know how much to club up or club down. Do not get let your ball get above the hole.....without course knowledge that's difficult for first timers. This is now Shanty's second best course adjacent to Cedar River. 4.25 stars. Highly recommended.
Must Play Course
Cedar River is an amazing golf course you definitely have to play in Northern Michigan. It has very unique holes that make you reconsider your shoot. I personally think this is the most beautiful golf course in Shanty Creek because of the condition it is always in and the design . The fairways are also wider then the fairways at The Legend so you have more room for error.
We're glad you enjoyed your 5-star experience with us. Please comment or reach out to our team in the golf shop to let us know more about your round at The Legend at Shanty Creek!
Fantastic Course
I love this golf course even though it is probably one of the most difficult in my personal opinion. The fairways are narrow so it leaves you with minimal room for error off the tee. The greens, tee boxes, and fairways are in great shape. The layout and difficulty is what has me coming back to this beautiful golf course. Additionally, extremely friendly staff.
Favorite course
Favorite course up north. A Challenge but fair. Great greens.
Thank you for taking the time to review us. Your feedback is valuable, and we look forward to delivering you excellent service again soon. The Cedar River at Shanty Creek thanks you!
Wish This Course Was In My Home State
As a first time visitor from Florida I did quite a bit of research to find a course near my location and within my $ zone. So glad we played Hawk's Eye. Staff was great and course was in excellent shape. Quite different from our Fla. courses lots of undulation and different variety of holes. You can lose some balls here but the challenge and beauty of the course made our round well worth while. Took plenty of video to show the folks at home and we highly recommend this course to all. Thank you to all involved.
Going Downhill
It was not in good shape. Greens aerated still and in generally rough shape, fairways with browned out spots all over, just not what it’s been previously when I’ve played here in 2018 and 2019. Hoping it’s better when I come back in September and will update if so. Not at all worth the money as it stands. The restaurant/grill is also in serious need of an overhaul.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to review us, and for the 3 stars. We're sorry to hear the course may not have been in the best shape on the day of your round. We appreciate your feedback as we work to make any necessary improvements. Thank you for choosing to golf with us, and we look forward to seeing you again soon at The Legend at Shanty Creek.
Nice layout fast play
I really enjoyed the course it was a great layout and very few people on the course made it for 3 1/2 hour round. In very good shape for early in the year
More Like The Myth
First review I have ever posted.
I know it’s early in the season but it should be unrealistic to pay more than $30 for a course that has aerated greens, especially if they don’t fill the holes with sand. Unfortunately every green at this course was under these conditions. On top of that the course appears to not have been well taken care of in a couple years, although the back nine was in slightly better shape. I’ve grown up hearing how amazing this course is and yes the course layout and views are spectacular but currently the course is not.
I do want to point out that the people that worked there were as nice as I’ve encountered golfing but I would advise anyone to golf somewhere else until the conditions improve.
Hello. Thank you for taking the time to review and leave your feedback on your recent round with us. It is always our utmost goal to provide our golfers with a fun and enjoyable time and we apologize if we missed the mark. Please feel free to reach out to our staff in the pro shop with any additional concerns. Thanks for choosing The Legend at Shanty Creek.
Summit course
Not bad. Fairways very good. Greens are wildly inconsistent. Hopefully, that’s a May thing. Some of the greens are HARD and fast, others are softer and SLOW.
Multiple par 3s OVER 200 from the Whites is a bit much. That’s something you see back on Blue and Black tees.
Arnies grill could sure use some freshening.
Hi, thank you so much for leaving us with your feedback. We value our customer experience, so your review is important to us. We will make note and we hope to see you back at The Summit at Shanty Creek!
We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We would love to know how we can earn those last two stars next time! Thanks for playing The Summit at Shanty Creek.
The most absurd review I have ever read. Your day was ruined by a couple of young employees, getting minimum wage, and they failed to jump and kiss your cheap rear end the minute you finish your round?? Did you want them to clean your K- Mart clubs and put them in your car, then water your lawn?? Do us all a favor & take us fishing, Time for the nursing home Gramps!!
